Distraction-Free Studying: How to Actually Focus in Nursing School
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Nursing school demands an intense commitment to study time, making it crucial to establish a routine that prevents distractions and allows for wise time management. The primary goal is to eliminate interruptions during study sessions so that students can fully focus on their tasks, thereby retaining information more effectively while also preserving valuable time for loved ones and personal relaxation. To achieve this level of concentration, the first step is to physically remove potential sources of distraction by placing phones and other devices in a location where they cannot be seen or accessed, ideally setting them to "do not disturb" mode to silence notifications before beginning a session.
Creating an optimal physical environment is equally important for maintaining focus and preventing fatigue. Students should gather all necessary materials, such as laptops, highlighters, and textbooks, ensuring everything is easily accessible within reach to avoid unnecessary interruptions. The study space itself must be quiet and well-lit; adequate lighting prevents eye strain and tiredness, while a peaceful environment free from noise or foot traffic helps the mind stay engaged with the material. By setting up a comfortable and organized area, learners can create a mental state conducive to deep work without the need to constantly shift their attention away from their studies.
Once the environment is prepared, the most effective strategy involves studying in focused bursts of forty-five minutes followed by short breaks of ten to fifteen minutes. This technique allows the brain to absorb and process information efficiently without becoming overwhelmed, but it is vital that these breaks are used wisely rather than immediately returning to social media or phone usage, which can fragment attention further. During these rest periods, students should engage in restorative activities such as eating a snack, staying hydrated, using the restroom, taking a short walk around the block, or having brief interactions with family members to discuss daily plans like dinner arrangements before returning to their studies.
Adopting this structured approach of alternating focused study with genuine rest has been proven to be one of the best strategies for success in nursing school. It ensures that students do not leave everything until the last minute, allowing their brains the necessary time to make connections and consolidate learning, which often happens during these restful periods or even while sleeping. By consistently following this cycle of intense focus followed by mindful recovery, nursing students can significantly improve their retention rates, reduce stress, and maintain a healthy balance between academic responsibilities and personal well-being throughout their rigorous educational journey.

Hi, welcome to Nursing School Explained
in this video about distraction-free
studying. As you know, nursing school is
highly intensive in study time. So, if
you set yourself up successfully, you
can manage your time wisely, and the
most important part is not to get
distracted while you're trying to study
to first of all accomplish the studying
and then also spend more time with your
loved ones and enjoy some free time.
So, what the best thing to do is when
you're ready to study, put your phone or
your devices on do not disturb and away
where you cannot see them. That way, you
won't be distracted by your phones or
any notifications.
Gather everything that you need. Your
laptop, your computer, your
highlighters, your books, whatever it is
that you need for your study session,
make sure you have everything easily
accessible.
Set up a quiet and well-lit space. Very
important because otherwise, you get
distracted if there are noise, if
there's somebody coming and going. If
you don't have the appropriate lighting,
you'll get tired. So, make sure you set
yourself up in a very comfortable space.
And then study without any distractions
for 45 minutes. Now, that's not a whole
lot of time, but if you can really focus
on the task at hand, it'll help you so
much retain the information. After the
45 minutes, take a 10-to-15-minute
break. I know it sounds a lot, but it's
best if you give your brain the rest to
absorb the information and process it.
Now, during the break, don't go straight
back to your phone, check your social
media because then you'll get
distracted, your brain focuses on other
things. We want to make sure we take a
restful break where you can use the time
to eat a snack, make sure you stay
hydrated, maybe go to the bathroom.
Maybe you can even go for a short walk.
It doesn't have to be a lot, maybe just
around your block, maybe take your dog
for a walk if they need to go outside,
maybe spend some brief time with family,
talk over who's going to make dinner and
when and how. Just some very brief
interaction and then get right back to
work, which means for you studying. So
then we have another 45 minutes with 10
to 15 minute break. So this has really
been proven to be some of the best
strategies. So to really focus and
hunker down for a short period of time,
then give you yourself some break to be
um little bit more rested, give your
brain that time to process the
information and absorb it. And also make
sure that you don't leave everything to
the very last minute. Your brain needs
time to make these connections and those
sometimes even happen during those
restful periods while you're taking the
study breaks or even while you sleep. So
