Danilo Zimmermann, Banco BS2 & Diego Puerta, Dell Technologies | theCUBE + NYSE Wired: AI Factories
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The interview features Nelson Zimmermann, CIO of Banco BS2, and Diego Puerta, Brazil General Manager at Dell Technologies, discussing the critical role of AI infrastructure in modern banking. As a digital bank focused on corporate clients, Banco BS2 emphasizes that security, availability, and low latency are non-negotiable requirements for their operations. To meet these demands, the bank is building a massive data lake as a foundational element while simultaneously preparing governance frameworks and deploying AI agents to enhance business processes and IT functions. This approach allows them to navigate the complex regulatory environment in Brazil, where the Central Bank enforces strict regulations that necessitate advanced technological solutions to manage evolving legal texts and operational complexities.
The transformation of Banco BS2 from a traditional family-owned institution into an innovative digital leader required significant strategic shifts and strong support from its owners. The family behind the bank recognized early on the need to adapt to new market dynamics, granting leadership the space to develop a robust digital strategy that focuses on areas often overlooked by larger competitors. This partnership with Dell Technologies has been pivotal, evolving beyond a simple technology vendor relationship into a strategic alliance where Dell helps connect infrastructure directly to business outcomes. Through this collaboration, the bank has successfully implemented automation and efficiency improvements, enabling faster credit processes and creating new ways to serve customers while maintaining high security standards.
Looking ahead, both leaders highlight that the future of banking lies in accelerating roadmaps driven by secure, well-governed data infrastructures. The conversation underscores that money is essentially data, and leveraging AI allows financial institutions to unlock significant growth potential and headroom for expansion. By migrating to new infrastructure with Dell's support, Banco BS2 aims to escalate its capabilities in security and governance while deepening its understanding of customer needs. Ultimately, the dialogue illustrates how traditional enterprises can successfully modernize by embracing AI not just as a tool, but as a fundamental component of their business strategy, ensuring they remain competitive and agile in an increasingly complex global market.

>> I'm John Furrier with the Cube here with
Dave Vellante, my co-host.
>> [music]
>> Well, I'm John Furrier with the Cube
here at the Cube's NYSE studio.
Of course, we have our Palo Alto studio
connecting Silicon Valley and Wall
Street. This is our AI factory series
where we interview the leaders in the AI
factory. Of course, we got an
international edition. The World Cup is
in town. Brazil's here. Dell Brazil's
here with some of their top customers
that are great examples of pioneering
the future. Then we have Nelson
Zimmerman, CIO Banco BS2, and of course,
Diego Puerto, Brazil general manager at
Dell Technologies. Great to see you.
Thanks for coming on.
We're in town for the World Cup. I could
talk about that all day long. Let's get
into AI factories though. Talk about
your business.
Um how are things going? How are you
looking at the AI wave? How is it
impacting your business?
>> Great. Thank you, Diego. Thank you,
John. To be here in a this iconic place.
Our BS2 is a a digital bank focused on
companies.
And we have credit and other products to
offer for for companies in Brazil.
And talk about infrastructure and AI.
We as a a digital bank
security, availability,
um
latency is not negotiable. It's
uh mandatory for us.
for us.
And uh create a critical uh
infrastructure is very important in
these situations. To be the foundation
uh before you escalate AI. So, I believe
a lot on that.
And talk about a little uh about AI.
We are building uh a huge database, a
data lake
uh as a foundation to together with this
critical infrastructure.
And also in parallel, preparing the
governance and agents
AI agents to escalate in some business
areas and and also in IT.
So, um
uh for us it's very important to get to
have the governance, of course, of the
AI uh initiatives
as a regulation that's necessary in
Brazil, especially. The Central Bank is
very strong uh with us there.
And um
we see that we had have now a road map
with this new infrastructure to develop
this those initiatives.
>> Your financial infrastructure, that's
critical infrastructure.
>> Yeah.
>> Diego, the the regulatory environment
also is there. They have a lot of data.
It's regulatory.
Banks.
>> Banks.
>> Banks are banks, but AI is helping.
We're seeing financial infra enable
faster credit, new ways to do things.
What are some of the highlights?
>> Okay. And and let's add on the top of
that the Brazilian complexity that's
well known. It's
even more is is it even more complex.
The regulatory detects changes,
uh the complexity of the text changes.
We are going through a text reform right
now, but it's going to take a while to
get in place. Then it's a it's a super
complex
uh process and requires a lot of
technology from the bank system. That's
not a surprise why the Brazilian banking
system is so advanced. And on the case
in the case of a BS2 uh
uh I'd like to highlight something. It
it's a it's a bank that belongs to a
very traditional family that used to
call it Banco Bom Sucesso that made a
transition to a digital bank and became
very successful that journey. That's a
very entrepreneurial family changing the
business, adapting to the new dynamics,
and I'm sure that they are in a the
great position to take advantage of the
AI.
>> So, they've transformed to the So, that
was a kind of old school
>> A couple of times is something that we
are
>> Yeah. And I'm There's a lot of
operational changes
and efficiencies. How did you do it?
What are you doing now?
>> Yeah. As Diego said, was a big
transformation that we continue to have.
So, the strategy and put IT as an
enabler for the business strategy was
very important and continue to be very
important for us.
So, as a digital bank, we we need to be
near the the strategic, not only
developer or assistant uh
construction, but understand the
business and then understand the
customer to really develop products that
bring value, bring good experience. So,
in in IT, we prepared a change,
especially related to our future and
process.
Uh especially now in a an AI moment,
when you need to to build a new way to
to work
uh to really modify the process, not
only adapt adopt
agents uh in specific process.
>> Talk about the partnership because you
need a partner.
Diego, what was the strategy? How is it
working? Can you give us some examples
of what's going on right now?
>> Um I believe it's the same format we are
doing with the most strategic and
tech-demanding customers in Brazil.
Understanding the business, working
together, helping them navigate through
the managing IT complexity.
Uh but the most important aspect is
understand their business need. I think
that that's where we spend most of the
time discussing. What is critical? What
do you guys want to change? And
especially now with AI, it's what do you
want to transform? What's the business
transformation we want to make? And it
the discussion has not been different
with our BSS
>> You know, digital banking, it's money.
So, money is data.
Automation is efficiency. So, with AI,
we see good data.
Automation um is big. So, the What is
your data strategy ambitions?
How are you thinking about that? Because
this is where the opportunity, the
headroom, as they say, there's a lot
more growth.
>> Yeah.
As I start to talk here, we prepare a
foundation as a a data lake.
And, uh, we already started with some
agents. And now that we migrate our data
center and and invest in a new
infrastructure together with Dell,
uh, we are preparing a more, um, um,
accelerate roadmap, I would say.
Uh, to really escalate with security,
with governance, as I said,
and, uh, understand the customer. So,
and we are always using our partners to
help on that.
>> So, talk about the Dell relationship
that you have. How did they help? I'll
ask him the same question. He's got a
good answer.
>> Do you want me to leave?
>> [laughter]
>> Close your ears.
Go into silence. No, because transitions
are hard. And once you cross that
that threshold, you now are another
level. And things get faster.
>> Dell Dell is our, uh, long-term partner
and following and together with us in
all the journey.
So, um,
uh, recently, for example, we had some
experience with automation, with some,
uh,
suggestions about, uh, more efficiency.
Uh,
help us to to become a better company, a
better and intelligent company.
So, I would say that, uh, Dell is
already a a strategic partner, not only
a tech partner. That for us is very
important. What we expect always is that
this kind of partner understand our
business contest, not only to offer
technology, but help us to connect
infrastructure with a business outcomes.
>> Diego, what's the partnership for them?
How's it looking from you? How do you
help them? What's been the core, um,
work product? What's been the strategy?
Are we the same? Has there been anything
different?
>> No, I think that the understanding the
how BS2 has changed it has been key to
help us then with the infrastructure.
They own the strategy, we support them
on the infrastructure challenges.
>> Yeah.
>> That's how we've been working and has
been quite successful. It's a pleasure
to be part of the journey.
>> You know, I just have to ask you a
question. As a big
family, that's private companies, old
school.
Now you go faster to modern era. You're
now a modern company. What was it like
for the owners?
And
were they skeptical? Did they give you
full confidence? Were they nervous? What
were they thinking? Take us through the
You better do it.
>> Yeah.
>> [laughter]
>> Actually, the family is is a red always.
BS2 is
recognizing Brazil as a innovative
company.
Uh, seeing it's a big success
when they launched new products already
the big banks. So, I don't have problems
on that. Always working together with
the family that control the bank with
the CEO that's the CEO that the family
bring to to the market from the
marketing to help us in 2021.
So, I'm having space to develop our our
digital strategy.
>> They wanted to do it.
>> Yeah, they they
they needed and we need
to do that in Brazil and it's an
opportunity to really
focus on some areas that the big banks
maybe don't have the same focus on.
>> Well, we're here at the New York Stock
Exchange. The bell's going to ring very
shortly. We're going to go down and see
that.
IPO in the future?
>> [laughter]
>> Who knows?
You're probably thinking about You're
not a public company. You can say
whatever you want. Thank you so much for
coming on. Diego, as always, super
informative and insightful. Thank you.
>> My pleasure.
>> I'm John Furrier, host of The Cube. We
are here at the NYC. We're going to go
watch the bell close, close out the
market. Big day on Wall Street, big day
in the United States as the World Cup is
here. A lot of games to be watched all
around. We'll be at one next week.
Thanks for watching.
Thank you.
