dinosaur games are my favorite aside
from dinosaur movies, books, toys, just
everything dinosaurs.

already 18 years old, but my love for
those prehistoric giants has never left
me since my childhood. That day, I was
very bored and scrolled around Game Jolt
[music] to find a new game to play,
something to kill some time right after
I beat Fossil League. God, that damn
Suchomimus was a total piece of
and Dinosaur King, that sore Rex
was a piece of too, on my Nintendo
DS that somehow still worked, and I
found something. It was a
point-and-click game called Ancient
Paradise, and it was about a family who
traveled to South America for a relaxing
getaway. A, seems harmless enough, but
curiosity got the best of me, so I
clicked download. When I finished
downloading the game, I opened the EXE
file, and boom, I was thrown into the
title screen. The words Ancient Paradise
were written in a font that resembled
Jurassic Park's in light. The background
was black, and the menu text was red,
written in Papyrus font. The selections
were new game, continue, options, and
exit. I clicked exit, and it turned
dark, and a dinosaurian growl howled
through my laptop's speaker. Was
dinosaurian even a word I tried to
pronounce? I was spooked, but I knew
that I was in for a real treat. I
checked around options, and the only
options to choose from were volume,
quality, and graphics. I maxed out
quality for that extra oomph on the
sound side, graphics to make the game
look sparkly and [music] and then
there was quality. I maxed it up, and
suddenly a selection written in a red
blood-like font appeared, asking me,
[music] "Are you sure?" with yes and no
on the bottom while a soft tribal
drumbeat played. I clicked yes. Without
further ado, I started the game. The
screen [music] cut to black, and a
dialogue box appeared.
Mom and Dad were my favorite people in
this world, aside from my friends in
school. Usually, we went to malls, zoos,
and even amusement parks during summer
and Christmas holidays, but this time
Dad planned something special. "We are
going on a trip to South America to a
tropical resort near the Amazon
rainforest. Pretty cool, huh?"
Then a cutscene played, showing an
airplane flying through the clear blue
skies. A text box then appeared.
Dad went out to buy some snacks at the
hotel's convenience store while Mom was
unpacking our clothes and other stuff in
our lodge.
Then the intro ended. I started with a
beautiful view of the Amazon rainforest
from the lodge's front porch. I could
hear the howls of howler monkeys, the
screeches of macaws, the soft growls of
a jaguar, and the chirping of crickets
and cicadas. The graphics were so firm.
The trees were vibrant, the skies were
clear,

>> and I could venture freely around the
resort. I discovered that there's a
pathway leading to the forest. I
stumbled into it, and another cutscene
played.
I remembered something.

>> When I was waiting for my mom and dad to
return from their taxi with our luggage,
I overheard two people talking about a
beast that lurks within the jungle. It
is said that every night during the
summer, a dragon-like beast with sharp
fangs, scythe-like claws, a snake-like
head, obsidian black scales, and glowing
red eyes that looked like burning coals
would come out and hunt anything it
sees, be it a man or beast. It was a
ferocious creature and hearing the story
itself sent shivers down my spine.
What wasn't settling is that I played
this game [music] at the end of summer,
in August. I hope this is just a
coincidence. The cutscene ended with a
view of the resort at night. The boy
picked up his phone and received a text
from his mother to return to the resort,
but it wasn't finished. Suddenly, the
game went from third person to first
person, prompting me to escape from the
jungle and return to the lodge.
just got real, doesn't it? I navigated
through the dark forest while unsettling
Jaguar [clears throat]
roars, vampire bat screeches, and howler
monkey howls blasting through the
speakers. I could see a pair of red eyes
lurking in the darkness, but I tried my
best to avoid them. I noticed that there
was a timer on top of the screen ticking
from 300 seconds in blood-red Jurassic
Park test pods. I need to beat the
clock, or else this [music] dragon-like
thing will eat me for dinner. With only
68 seconds remaining, I escaped [music]
from the jungle, ran back to the lodge,
and saw that mom and dad were nowhere to
be seen, and there were trails of blood
on the floor, signifying that my parents
had become the monster's first victims.
The window was shattered, too. I was too
late, but my survival is much more
important this time. I was prompted to
hide somewhere, [music]
and when I tried to get out of the
lodge, a text box appeared saying,
"Never." with a lock sound playing. I
heard growls, the same growls I heard
earlier in the main menu. That thing is
[music] getting closer and closer. I
discovered that the lodge has a closet,
and [music] I went inside and locked
myself in. I thought I was safe until
something busted through the lodge's
door. I heard footsteps coming [music]
straight for me, and suddenly the thing,
the monster itself slashed its way into
the closet. It was a Megaraptor and
dinosaur, [music] a Megamacrothorax.
It grinned at me and its fangs were
stained with blood. I could see [music]
its of human and animal guts from inside
its mouth. Its claws were long and sharp
and its eyes were red like [music]
embers of flame. Its scales were as
black as obsidian as if this thing was
the shadow of death. I was very scared
despite being a dinosaur fan. I tried to
hit [music] control alt delete to end
the game but what I got was the beast
roaring at me with a near piercing roar
that sounded like a mix of a T-Rex from
Jurassic Park, a horse neigh, and a
chalk board being scratched with a rake.
My ears hurt and I felt a major
headache. I had no choice but to remove
the battery from the laptop and reinsert
it. Thankfully, it was all over. When I
came back to my downloads folder, the
game was gone. However, a new image file
popped up in my pictures folder. It was
the image of that Megamacrothorax
staring [music] back at me. I could feel
like something breathing behind me.
Something big and clawed. [music] The
breath felt cold and it sent even more
shivers down my spine. It's right behind
me, isn't it? The shadow of death
itself. The one that kills with cold
wind.
