Video summary
The lecture addresses the foundational requirements for a biblically and legally valid marriage, emphasizing that legal documentation is essential regardless of whether a church ceremony takes place. In many jurisdictions, including India, a marriage performed solely in a church without signing official government documents lacks legal recognition, meaning the couple cannot be considered married in the eyes of the law. Conversely, a court marriage where couples sign binding documents before an authorized official constitutes a valid union that must be honored, even if it occurs outside a church setting. The speaker stresses that while religious ceremonies are spiritually significant, the legal contract is what establishes the marital status necessary for all civil purposes.
Preparing for marriage involves developing specific relationship skills and understanding distinct biblical roles within the household. The husband is called to serve as a servant leader who takes responsibility for the home, preventing the wife from having to fill that leadership void alone, which can be emotionally burdensome. Couples must also learn to maintain healthy boundaries with extended family members, particularly in-laws, ensuring that both sides of the family are treated equally without allowing external interference. This includes making a conscious decision before marriage about living arrangements and financial independence to avoid situations where one spouse feels trapped or controlled by their parents after the wedding.
Before entering into matrimony, it is crucial to address past traumas, addictions, and negative experiences that could impact the relationship. The speaker highlights real-life examples of abuse, pornography addiction, and substance abuse that can destroy a family if not healed prior to marriage. While individuals may have suffered from childhood trauma or witnessed infidelity in their families, these issues must be resolved through healing processes, counseling, or prayer so that they do not resurface within the new marriage. Additionally, couples should discuss their spiritual callings and ministries individually before marrying, ensuring that each partner takes responsibility for their own spiritual growth rather than relying on the other to lead them in faith.
Finally, the lecture explores practical ways Christian couples can reflect the relationship between Christ and the church in their daily lives through unconditional love, sacrifice, and mutual nourishment. This involves setting digital boundaries to avoid impure influences, honoring parents while prioritizing the spouse as the primary emotional unit, and managing ego clashes when one partner earns more or holds a higher status than the other. The core message is that marriage requires a commitment to love unconditionally through every season of life, celebrating God's blessings on each other without jealousy, and maintaining a balance where caring for parents does not come at the expense of the marital bond.

All right,
let's start um second lecture.
There's a question on the chat.
Uh if two believers have a court
marriage but do not have a church
wedding. Okay. Uh is their marriage
still biblically valid?
Okay. So the answer is yes because
um they are legally married. That means
you know when you when when they go to
the court and I you know I in in
different places the details may vary
but basically
uh in a court wedding uh they will
they will sign the documents that they
are married there'll be witnesses who
sign it and in before a judge or you
know the authorized person the registar
of the marriage uh they will say that
they are taking the other person for to
be their spouse. So, and it's it it you
know the details will vary from place to
place but generally they are signing a a
legal document and they are making a
commitment before
an appointed person appointed by the
government uh that they are being
married to the other person. So although
it's the setting is not um a church they
are making a commitment which is legally
binding and so um therefore we say like
look it it it is it is a marriage and we
have to honor that.
>> Okay. Uh
that's uh that's that's important. So
now you just look at it the other way
which is
um if somebody if a couple they only do
a church wedding example they they do a
church wedding
and they don't register their marriage
legally
then
uh
legally the the church wedding is not
recognized. I mean at least I'm think in
in in in our Indian context
uh even if they have a wedding ceremony
or if they don't sign the the documents
they don't sign the documents
uh the legal documents then that
ceremony itself is legally doesn't
constitute a wedding uh that they are
married. The government has no record
that they are married. So you know for
all legal purposes there is no document
that says they legally married. So the
ceremony itself the church ceremony
itself doesn't get them legally married.
They have to actually sign those
documents
for to be to be legally recognized as
married married couple. Right? So you
look at it from the other perspective
where from a legal standpoint what
really holds is the documents that they
sign
understood right I'm not confusing you
right that means just they go go to the
altar and say I love you you love me
finish it is not a government will not
recognize
they have to go in they have to sign the
paper only then legally they are married
So, so both so the full uh I think
what's really important is that legal
document uh for to be recognized as
married couple.
Okay, questions
from here.
All right, let's move forward. We'll
keep some more time uh afterwards for
questions.
Okay. So, we're just talking about, you
know, how to prepare uh for marriage and
uh
let's go back to the PDF.
So, what are some things uh that we want
to uh you in terms of preparing for
marriage, we said relationship skills
and in relationships, relationship
skills very important is communication,
right? how you communicate uh with each
other. That's very important. Number
two, understanding roles in marriage.
We will we will talk about that
separately. But
the husband
has to recognize that he is supposed to
be the leader in the marriage. He's
responsible.
God, we're talking about Bible
biblically. God has appointed the
husband to be the head to be the leader
to be the in charge of the house. Right?
So the husband must take leadership in
the house for his family.
Problems happen in the marriage when the
husband doesn't take leadership.
You know because now wife has to fill in
that responsibility.
wife has to be like the leader. She has
to so many things. She has to think
about you know the family and so on.
It's very very difficult.
So if the husband fails
to take leadership in the family, the
burden comes on the wife.
It's very difficult.
You know uh the wife has to be like
father and mother kind of thing. It is
very very difficult. So husband must
take leadership in the house. They must
know the roles and be it's not like
being the boss but being a servant
leader in the house.
And um at the same time
the the home must be like a nice team
you know where husband and wife like we
already said. Uh yeah, we understand our
responsibilities as uh husband, father,
wife, mother. We understand the roles,
our god-given roles. And yet we should
function as a good team.
Uh just just just flowing in and out of
our what we are supposed to call do. Uh
so that that is something we have to
develop. Uh number three when we talk
about you know relationships uh uh
skills we talk about you know um
maintaining healthy boundaries with
extended family right with in-laws
because when you get married
the wife will have her family extended
family husband will have his extended
family these two people are it. But now
you need to know how to have good
relationships with all the other people
in the family.
Have good relationships
without allowing them to interfere.
You want to maintain healthy
relationships,
right? So that is also important. And
usually I we tell the couple you know
before you get married you discuss
how you will manage relationship
especially with your immediate family.
uh be always encouraged saying after you
get married both of you you have your
own place
and
you be equal like
spend equal time with both sides of the
family
right just treat both sides equal keep
healthy relationship with both sides
right it shouldn't be uh sometimes I've
seen
I thing I've mentioned last time but
before marriage husband will say yeah we
will take our own place we'll have all
this all this all this after marriage
he'll say no see there is one extra room
in my father's house we'll go and stay
there
you think wife will be happy she won't
because before marriage he said we will
have our own place we'll stay by
ourselves etc etc
after marriage he's taking her to the
his house his parents 's house. Now
so many things happen. One, she doesn't
get the opportunity to set up her own
house, her own place. Second, now she's
always living with his parents,
you know. So that again it's it's it's a
lot to handle.
If that was the plan, they should have
discussed it before the wedding. before
the wedding he says see uh first one
year or first two years we will go stay
in my parents house we will stay there
then after that we will go somewhere
something you know you should discuss
clearly uh what you're planning to do
otherwise
uh if it's becoming dependent on one
side of the family uh the other person
may feel uncomfortable
so you have to you think like that you
Understand? I'm not saying
living with a family is always wrong.
I'm not saying that. Sometimes because
of situations, because of necessity,
these things do happen. But it is better
to discuss and talk about these things
before you do it.
Have agreement.
Some cases yeah before marriage they
agreed ground floor
my parents will be staying bus flow
brother and sister is staying next floor
we will be staying okay you discuss fine
you go and stay like that it's fine
everybody's happy but discuss that
before getting married
you and and and keep healthy
relationships with uh with all family
members both sides keep good
relationships
number five
This is quite important which is uh
overcoming past abuse, trauma and
negative experiences.
So
the reality is uh uh growing up
you know uh they as growing up people
could have had some difficult
sometimes traumatic experiences
in life. growing up.
Sometimes they have may have been
abused,
sometimes by their own family member.
Uh some sad stories are there, very sad.
Sometimes they maybe their own parent
abuses them, sometimes some other family
member abuses them, sometimes some
outsider abuses them. Uh it's very sad,
you know. Uh so these uh bad experiences
affect them emotionally
and could affect
the relationship with the spouse. Could
affect I'm not saying will but it could.
So it's always better
before marriage to address these issues.
The real reality is many people have had
uh could have had bad experiences in
their childhood. It's not it's not
uncommon.
People have had difficult experiences in
life.
But this should be addressed, dealt with
before you get married. Right.
Better to get help, address it.
So, you know, we can talk about some of
this. One is abuse.
Um whether it's emotional or physical.
Uh and again, it could have come through
different people. Um
maybe through parents, through other
family members.
Uh
it is sad
but I mean just think about if a if a
girl growing up in the house has been
abused by her own father
right
uh she has gone through that trauma or
sometimes it's
by some relative
they gone through the trauma
Uh and so
when it comes after marriage relating to
her husband
um she'll find it very difficult. I'm
not saying all the time but if that that
those issues have not been dealt with.
There could be fear. They could be maybe
sometimes even anger
towards men.
um
you know things like that.
One very sad case,
very sad case,
this girl was serving in a church.
This pastor was married.
He had his wife. He had his family.
But he was really controlling this girl
because she was ser serving in the
church like I think uh she was a singer
and worship thing and all. So he
and this is true story I'm not simply
making it up right. He was uh
controlling her life so much
and
probably sexually abusing her. I'm
saying probably because I don't have
first in I only heard it through the
person the husband who got married
really controlling.
So this proposal came to
a young man at APC
very sad and this was from Pentecostal
church only. So
he went saw the girl everything is fine
met the pastor. Everything in the
surface looks fine. He doesn't know the
backstory. He doesn't know what has been
going on. Pastor is giving full
recommendation.
Same pastor who is
abusing this girl is giving full
recommendation.
They got married
and then the pastor is saying you must
come and stay on the first floor first
floor of the of the pastor's house.
So this young man like uh
he he did not he didn't know what was
happening was very innocently okay fine
pastor is saying go and stay on the
first floor of the house
uh
fine
so this was in another city so he was
living in Bangalore but he moved there
so so arrangement is pastor and his
family are living on the ground floor.
He told this girl now she's married. The
girl and the husband to come and live on
the first floor.
Okay. He thought it's a different city.
Fine. They giving a house and all. He
didn't think anything bad. He is seven.
Then uh
everything he is controlling
and verse
he would tell him you come and you he
say you stay here for some time he will
go up the pastor will go up
and he'll tell this boy this young man
to stay down you stay here for some time
I'll go up
wondering what is going on
so Actually
this pastor was abusing this girl
continued to abuse this girl after
marriage
and he didn't initially he didn't know
why you know he didn't know he didn't
suspect but after sometime something is
wrong because every decision is being
dictated by the pastor through the girl
plus now something strange is happening
he's telling me to stay down for some
time he'll go up on his own what is
happening
Uh this is true story. I'm not making it
up.
Right
after that he
he couldn't you know once he found out
what to call he he just couldn't handle
this.
Of course he ended the marriage and came
out of it.
Now he's he's living abroad somewhere
else. But but the point is
this kind of things happen
and it is it was a Pentecostal church.
You know the pastor had been abusing
this girl and even after marriage he
made this whole arrangement and so sad
he ruined the life of this young man.
He came, he sat with me, he told me the
whole thing, you know, I was it was like
terrible to hear this
and he was somebody who grew up here
with us. I always hope the best, you
know, but of course I didn't get
involved in this
uh you know how this proposal came and
all because that's the family side of
things. I didn't get involved.
Uh but it was so sad. So sad.
So this whole abuse
is so real and sometimes it is so
terrible
very terrible. So some of the things
that we had to deal with and it's so
terrible sometimes we know when the
father is abusing the daughter and this
is before marriage so terrible so sad so
sad one girl you know in central she
came one day
I need to talk to you
and she
and she was helpless and the mother
would not believe her when she
complained to the mother this is what my
father is doing? She said, "What are you
talking?
How can it be?" Mother would not believe
the daughter
that the father is abusing as you know.
Can you imagine
uh after this trauma
that she has to now get married? Uh the
what emotional pain and thing is they go
through? But this is real. Yeah, these
are real things.
So,
um,
physical, emotional,
these are real things. So, so what I'm
saying is
in life people have gone through
difficult
situations.
But that doesn't mean they cannot get
married. They can, but we need to first
help them heal from the trauma.
And many times in the abuse case,
they're helpless.
That's why they're being abused. They're
helpless. Where they can go for help?
Think about that church situation. This
girl, uh, I think she didn't have
family. So, this pastor was just, uh,
you know, taking advantage of that.
So like this you know the they're
helpless so they don't know where to
reach out for help uh and so
before marriage we have to see
that
they have healing in their lives
you know
so this is this this is these are real
things I just shared some experiences
second is uh addictions
Now here's the problem I've seen very
often.
Suppose the boy is addicted to
something, drugs, smoking. One month
before wedding, you say I'm very clean.
One month I have not
uh touched this.
So sad. The girl will believe him. Ah,
he's given it up.
Wedding will happen. Day after wedding
he starts
so sad
you know. So this again is a is a these
addictions it's a problem you know and
we have to be careful cuz it will affect
the marriage right
um
and sometimes you know I've seen
some very highly educated people
PhD working in some nice company good
job but
in this particular case it was alcohol
So look at the person, the boy. He's so
well educated.
Good job.
You would think, hey, at least he has in
a better sense than this
uh for the sake of his wife, for the
sake of his children
uh not to get drunk. But I don't know
this addiction can be so so bad it
destroys the family. Destroys the family
because then after that he loses his
job, he loses his ability to work
properly. Family suffers.
Yeah. So
it's important that we deal with this
issue. I'm not saying you everybody's
perfect. There people may have you know
had these things but it is deal with
this. be free before you get into
marriage and we can help we can pray we
can address the emotion about this
address it before the marriage
don't take it into your marriage because
other people are going to suffer
you know so addictions be free uh
sometimes negative home environments
uh again you know maybe they've seen uh
infidelity unfaithfulness
there could separation, there's divorce
or there could be some bad behaviors
that they've observed in either of their
parents
um or sometimes uh previous
relationships. So these kinds of things
we again have to deal with
uh address these the point is
address any of these issues
before going into marriage because
people come from different situations.
Um there will be different things but
address it
uh uh before getting into marriage.
Uh two more. Number six is sexual
purity.
Uh break free of all sexual addictions.
Uh this is important. You know, all
kinds of things that uh that that would
actually
be a problem to sexual purity within
marriage. Uh make sure that you know we
bring ourselves in submission to our
Lord Jesus. uh be free from all of these
things.
I remember once one
it's very sad
one one lady came church so I want to
talk to you pastor okay she came to the
office
and she
now this is a Christian home
and she said her husband is addicted to
porn now this is all on the phone mobile
phone nowadays they're seeing all these
things on the phone
And he this is a Christian home.
She said he makes me watch this with
him.
Watch all of these things with him.
And she said I feel so husband is
addicted. He's making his wife watch
this. She says I feel so
worthless. I feel so disgusted. I feel
so terrible.
But this is what is going on.
And even though she has objected, no. So
he's he's so addicted to these things
and he's doing this.
Yeah. And how she feels, right? Cuz this
man is making her watch it and watch
these things with him. And it's
terrible.
He's addicted
and it is a Christian
Christian they coming to judge
what to do how to address this you know
only God can deliver the man change his
heart and mind and you know get him
straight so that he doesn't bring this
thing into his marriage
You know, so these are real things,
right? I'm not just simply not putting
it here to make a book. These are real
struggles,
real things that happened even in the
church, even in the Christian family.
Real things we have to address,
you know,
right? So, um, yeah. and then enjoy sex
within your marriage with your spouse.
So, keeping that sexual purity, right?
Number seven, I just close with this and
we'll take questions. Uh is uh Christian
maturity, calling and ministry.
Um,
so
personally
grow in your calling and ministry.
Personally, you think about what is God
calling me to do? Let me grow in that
calling and ministry. And so, you be
sure. I'm not saying you know everything
but be sure of what God is calling you
to do
right what kind of ministry can you do
what is God's call on your life you be
sure
right what things you can do
uh and you should take charge of your
own spiritual growth and you should be
able to read your Bible pray and grow
spiritually right don't say okay After I
get married, I'll my wife will help me
pray or my husband will help me. No, no,
no. You You pray, you read your Bible.
Don't so you should take charge of your
own spiritual growth.
Okay? Same thing with your own calling.
Uh uh you should know at least have a
sense of this is what God wants me to
do. This is how God is calling me to
serve him. How my life will serve God's
kingdom. So your spiritual growth, your
calling, you should be clear. You take
responsibility.
Right? Then before marriage, discuss
this with your spouse. Okay? What is
your calling? What is God calling you to
do? How can we once we get married, how
can we serve God together? How can we
grow spiritually together? These are
things you can discuss before you get
married.
Okay? So talk about these things before
marriage. But first you have to be sure
yourself
then you can have a discussion. You can
talk.
Right? So
yeah. So that kind of brings us to the
end of this chapter
and um
so before you you actually you know get
married spend there's some guidance here
spend some time get to know each other
talk about these things with each other
uh if there is a need address those
issues before you get married you know
now uh there are of course some very
good
uh
good examples of good uh things that
we've seen in church. I mean the best
thing is in church is when you see two
people they're serving God. They they
love God. They're growing spiritually.
They're serving doing whatever they can
in church. Then they meet uh they like
each other. They discuss then they go
through marriage preparation course and
then they get married and they have a
nice family. That's that's so nice to
see and we've seen you know good
examples of that. So I'm not saying and
I keep sharing all the bad examples. I'm
not saying life is full of bad example.
There's very good examples also some
very nice you know over the last 25
years we've seen so many good people so
many nice marriages have taken place
where young people come uh they grow in
their faith they serve God uh then they
find each other families are happy and
get married and they're happy. So it's
fine it's very good. Yeah. So those are
good things. Um yeah. So let's keep some
time for question answers on preparing
for marriage. Uh let's take this
question.
Rajie, um if marriage reflects Christ
and the church,
what practical responsibilities should
Christian couples carry every day to
reflect that relationship?
Yeah.
So uh we we'll talk more about this uh
in uh in in the chapter on the role of
the husband the wife we'll break this
down into uh detail but if you want to
look at it just at a high level uh when
we think about Christ and the church the
first thing is we see that that that
love that commitment just as Christ
loved the church right so husbands and
wives are in that love relationship
committed love.
Second thing we also see is sacrifice.
Uh Christ gave himself for the church
like he sacrificed.
So husbands, wives sacrifice
for the church. Uh and I'm just drawing
this from Ephesians 5. Uh the other
thing we see is um Jesus uh Ephesians 5
says he
uh nourishes and cherishes the church.
She nourishes and cherish. Nourish is
like feed to you give something to build
them up. Cherish is to hold very dear,
right? So you know if you think of it
both ways, we nourish each other. We we
really give into each other's lives. We
really encourage build each other up and
also we cherish each other. We hold, you
know, each other dear. So we can draw
these things from Ephesians 5 looking at
Christ in the church and make it work
both ways husband and wife. Uh uh yeah.
So that's in a quick nutshell but we're
going to get into the details of it in
uh our chapter. I think it's three or
four chapter um when you talk about the
role of the husband the wife. We look
into this in detail.
Okay. Any other questions? Yes please.
>> Pastor we are talking about this point
number five. overcoming past abuse. So
in the in the case of a physical abuse
and you are just mentioning uh that uh
it need to be revealed before the
marriage to the person whom she is
getting married would it be appropriate
>> I'm sorry we have we need before the
marriage we need to
>> yeah before the marriage you mentioned
that before the marriage it need to be
such kind of a abuse should be revealed
to the person whom
>> she's getting married. Yeah, I think
but it has to be addressed
>> need to be addressed.
>> So that means um
example if if a a a lady has experienced
abuse she should be healed off of it.
>> Absolutely. Y
>> uh through help you know or sometimes it
could be prayer or God healing or
sometimes through the help of a
counselor whatever but that that matter
for her has to be addressed. She should
be healed.
Um and it's not necessary to discuss it
with the future spouse. Not necessary.
>> As long as the person has been healed,
as long as that matter has been
addressed that she knows it's healed,
right?
>> Uh now during so that's the main point
that is the person has to be healed. uh
not necessary all the time to sit down
and discuss it with the futures unless
it's something that needs to be done,
right? Um uh it's better some it's
better as if it's healed, if it's done,
there no need to sit down and talk about
it.
>> Yeah.
>> You know, it's done. It's a matter of
the past. The the the the husband or
wife, the boy, the girl, they've gone
through that healing process. They're
fine. So, no need to sit around and
bring it up again. It's done.
Um
yeah
>> and uh the other one is uh regarding the
pastor who abused the the girl.
>> Uh so what happens to that pastor when
it has come to know in public?
>> So when the pastor
>> Yeah. the so the pastor will be removed
from his position.
>> Yeah. So
I mean I I don't see in this the case
that I mentioned
uh
from what the information I was given
the pastor refused to accept
responsibility
and so this person just ended the
marriage and came out
which means this pastor was not held to
account you know because uh this was
like an independent Pentecostal church
so there's nobody to hold this person
accountable. We left it because you
don't want to go and you know what can
you do? So, but correctly the pastor has
to be held accountable.
uh he needs to step down from ministry
and uh
go through a healing process, go through
a pro, you know, a process through which
God works in his life to get him to be
where God wants him to be. So that's
that has to happen. Basically, he has to
repent. He has to
overcome these things, you know. And if
I'm not saying he can never do ministry
after that he can once that that whole
restoration has actually happened he can
get back to ministry and go let God do
that you know so that that's the right
thing to do but in this particular case
that we were not able to do all that
so uh another question here what
practical ical boundaries should
unmarried Christians set to God purity
in a digital world. Yeah. So that's you
know that's um that's an important
thing. Uh see like I personally I
personally don't have a Facebook account
don't have I have an Instagram account
but only it is follow my wife and two
kids. That's all I but I don't even open
it. I haven't opened it for a long time.
uh I personally don't have time for this
like Facebook and Instagram and also
that's why we have a team media team
they handle everything uh so I don't
have time for this uh but it's okay I'm
not saying it's sinful you know
different people use it for different
things and of course you can use it for
good things right but
uh this can also become a trap
you know this this whole digital space
uh it can become uh trap
uh for both people who are unmarried and
who are married. Again, there I've seen
problems from both sides here. Uh so as
unmarried Christians, you know, okay, as
believers, use the use your account,
your social media account for good
things. Nothing wrong with it, you know,
use it for good things, you know, keep
it clean. Uh and use it for good things.
Uh
uh also you know control how much time
you may spend on it uh you know whatever
just keep it limited to good things
control your time don't get addicted to
it every time in between class you what
happened to my Instagram account
just relax you know just uh uh keep it
for good things manage your time and
don't use it to for you
impure things like to follow the wrong
kinds of people or feed your mind with
the wrong kinds of things because all
this there all kinds of junk you know on
social media because people put anything
so we have to guard ourselves right
so uh that's those are boundaries you
know we definitely have to set and even
for married people you know uh the same
thing sometimes problems in marriage
happen because of social media you know
the husband husband is following all
these strange people leaves messaging
all these strange people and and so uh
when the wife finds out it becomes a
real big problem so both unmarried
married
it's fine to use social media I use
YouTube to you know to as form of
education I listen to good things uh
watch news and so on uh on YouTube but
uh It's restricted. It's for good
things.
Yeah, that's it. I don't don't waste
time on on Facebook or Instagram. But
any other questions?
>> How can couples honor the parents
without allowing parents to control
their marriage? Yeah.
Yeah. So that's a good question. Very
practical.
So one is uh to keep healthy distance.
When I say healthy distance, I'm not
talking about like okay two 2 kilometers
from here. So no not like that emotional
distance, right?
Where so while we're growing up of
course uh when we're living with our
parents, of course we are very attached
to our parents. We're staying with them.
Fine. Nothing wrong with that. Once you
get married,
the closest person to you emotionally
would be your spouse.
If the parents are still there, other
family members, brothers, sisters will
still be there. But that there's a kind
of a little distance that you build
emotionally
between
you and the family member, parents,
family members.
Example,
maybe in the past when you wanted to
discuss something, you would go discuss
it with you know your parents or sibling
whoever. But now when you want to
discuss something, first person to
discuss with will be your own spouse.
Sit and disc and you put it within
there. You don't have to call
parent or someone else to discuss the
matter. You discuss with your own
spouse. Sit and talk. Right. And you
arrive at especially when it's a matter
for your own family. Uh that should
happen within the within Yeah. with your
spouse. So that means now you're you're
actually building a distance
uh between yourself and your parents or
family and saying
first priority is my own spouse. We will
discuss
we will make decisions.
If
parents maybe they out of good intents
and maybe too much caring
start interfering say I will tell you
what to do then we have to say please
you know I will discuss we will discuss
we will do now of course you know if
they are if you want to get their input
you can I'm not saying it's wrong they
may have good experience in certain
areas so we can draw from that
experience but it shouldn't be that they
dictate the decisions
right you can definitely draw from their
experience but ask them and learn from
the but they shouldn't dictate
if they are dictating the decisions then
it's interference it will not be good
you know so emotionally like that we
have to draw uh distance
while keeping the relationship healthy
you want to have good relationship on
both sides
but
draw the Yes.
Yes.
Um so one example would be just making
decisions. Do it with your spouse. Make
decisions.
Uh don't become financially dependent on
the parents
because if you become financially
dependent on the parents then the
parents of course will have a lot of
say. They are paying the bills then
obviously they will
say a lot of things. So financially if
you're independent then you can make
your own decisions. You'll be able to
stand on your own feet. Um
uh that way. Yeah. So those are some
things you know where we continue to
honor them. You go spend some time with
them on a weekly basis once in two
weeks. You go spend you continue to
honor them. You continue to do good to
them. Uh but you are
your own marriage is standing. your, you
know, your having your own unit family.
Um, what does love your wife as Christ
loved the church actually cost a husband
or what? Ephesians 5:25. Yeah.
Um, yeah. You know, it's it simply means
that the husband love the wife
unconditionally, right? That means at
all costs
unconditionally. You're committed to
your spouse.
Uh we don't know what life brings. You
know, different families experience
different things.
But the thing commitment is hey
the husband continues to love the wife
through every season every challenge. Um
that's that's the kind of commitment and
should be it should be both ways right
uh husband loves the wife this way
unconditionally the wife loves the
husband uh with that same kind of
commitment in order to build the
marriage right so if you if you ask me
you know how do you break it down we'll
say it's it's unconditional
committed love through all seasons
through whatever life brings we we still
continue to love
Both ways, right?
Yes. Sorry. Okay. Oh, you can back
>> honor our parents. Yeah.
How does
uh people who were brought in Christ.
So they won't
they won't stand in their problems.
How do you say it?
>> So the question is um the Bible is
saying uh you know Genesis 2:24 a man
shall leave his father and mother. So I
think your question is
uh what does what does it mean
practically you know uh does it uh see
um
like we were saying
the the whole purpose it doesn't mean
that they cease being our father and
mother. They're still our father and
mother. We still have to care for them
and love them and honor them. But the
priority now is
the husband to his wife and the wife to
her husband. That is the priority.
While we continue to honor them and
care for them to the extent we can
without taking away from
the marriage or from the family itself,
right? So if they are going through a
difficult time yeah you come support
them stand with them and um
be with them help in whatever way
possible but don't do it at the expense
of your own
marriage that because your first
priority is to your spouse and to your
own marriage. Example
suppose
um parents on either side are going
through some crisis. I don't
husband shouldn't say okay wife and
children all of you you be on your own.
Bye-bye. I'll go take care of my
parents. You can't do that because your
first priority is to your wife and your
children. So that commitment must be
there. You must be the husband to your
wife, the father to your children. And
then what extra you can do to take care
of your family. You too,
not at the expense of your own
parents,
uh your own wife and children, right?
Because that is your first commitment.
Then what you can do? Okay, you do help.
So we're continuing to love our parents.
We continue to honor our parents but
always understand your priority is to
your wife because you leave your father
and mother and be joined to your wife
and it's to your family. Yeah. Then you
help whatever way you can
you know so that balance with sometimes
if we go one extreme then this side will
suffer. Correct. So we have to keep
things in proper order while we continue
to honor and
take care of parents.
>> Pastor one last thing.
>> Yes.
>> Uh
ego plays a very very important and
crucial uh between a married couple. So
when wife is earning more than the
husband
>> okay there is some ego clash and there
can be cropping up of jealousy and such
things. So how do they handle it?
>> Yeah. So this is a real question very
important like you know uh sometimes and
you see in some situations where the
wife may be more accomplished than the
husband you know maybe more education
maybe higher position maybe morning
uh maybe career-wise maybe more whatever
you know those things uh and then it
could cause a lot of I mean it all
depends on how the husband handles it
right husband should be should celebrate
that hey it's okay you you know, God has
blessed the wife, uh, made her, it's
okay, celebrate it, and, uh, we have to
be content with what we've been given,
right? So, be happy about it. Um,
so in my situation, Amy's a doctor. So,
some places I go, "Oh, this is Dr. Amy's
husband." So, oh, okay. Okay, fine. Yes.
Yes. So, I will be recalled as her
husband. She's a she's the one who's
more famous, you know. you know so that
is fine I have no issues about it right
because that is in her space she's the
one who's recognized right if I go this
side here in the pas in the church space
okay they recognize me but in that space
she's the one who
is recognized it's fine you know I don't
feel any jealous about I'm so glad you
know that uh in her space she's a
blessing to so many people uh so I think
that's just having the right attitude
the right thing. Hey, God has blessed my
wife there. I serve him this way. It's
fine. It's uh that's all you just
celebrate what God has done. Yeah.
Without getting jealous or feeling bad
in any sense inferior. No, we're not
inferior. It's just that God has blessed
each one of us in different ways. Yeah.
All right. Let's wrap for today. Uh
we'll continue this uh next week. Thank
you.
