Video summary

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Nutrition has identified the increasing prevalence of renal failure as a critical public health issue that necessitates immediate action to improve patient care. In response to this growing need, the commissioning of a new dialysis unit at the St. Jude Hospital OSHA site has been established as a top priority. This strategic expansion will increase capacity to fourteen dialysis stations, offering a vital solution for residents in the southern part of the island who require treatment. By bringing these essential services closer to their homes, the new facility aims to provide patients with more comfortable and accessible care, reducing the burden of travel while ensuring they receive timely medical attention. Dr. Sharon Belmar George, the Chief Medical Officer, along with Principal Nursing Officer Julietas, recently visited the newly operational unit to oversee its launch and assess the transition process. Their visit highlighted the significant impact of chronic non-communicable diseases, with renal failure being a major complication that affects an increasing number of patients across the region. The team has worked diligently to ensure a safe transfer of operations from the existing facilities at Millennium Heights Medical Complex and St. Jude Hospital to this new state-of-the-art center. This transition was conducted in strict adherence to both local and regional protocols for dialysis services, demonstrating a high level of professionalism and commitment to patient safety during the move. The successful commissioning of the unit has been supported by the Ministry of Health, which facilitated the initiative to ensure a smooth operation. Both patients and staff have expressed great satisfaction with the new center, noting that it meets all necessary standards for renal dialysis support. While current patient numbers remain stable as the team adjusts to the new location, there is a clear focus on future growth. The medical team plans to actively work on strategies to increase the volume of patients being treated in the south of the island, thereby maximizing the benefits of this expanded capacity and further enhancing access to life-saving treatments for the community.
