Video summary

Good morning and welcome to Sunday morning coffee. This is Bridget here on Above Life channel. Today's talk topic is chapters. Inspired by the season the commencement graduation season inspired by the spring moving gently into summer time. And inspired by connection and reflection. I had the opportunity recently to attend a college commencement ceremony and actually two of them. Oh my goodness. That is a whole day of stuff. Let me just tell you. A whole day of multiple ceremonies and lots of sitting, lots of clapping, lots of pomp and circumstance and it reminded me of how our lives can be organized into chapters. Which I guess is the same kind of thing as rhythms. Or segments. Or seasons. However you look at it, it's a way to not separate, but to distinguish between moments that are milestones and time passing. I've said this so many times on this channel as you well know and to my close friends and family that I have been so fortunate and I have so much gratitude to be able to look at my life and acknowledge these such spans of time, these chapters, and it literally feels like I've lived multiple lifetimes in one life, an incarnation. I mean, that's crazy to me. But I'm pretty sure that if you looked at your life in a little differently, perhaps not being quite so hard on yourself or harsh or focused on the regrets or the losses, but to take a just a moment to acknowledge you being here in this chapter of your life, acknowledging that there has been many other chapters before it, and I'm not just talking about prologues. Okay? We're not just talking about the dedication in the beginning of life. I'm talking about many many many stories, experiences, things that at the time when they happened, may not have seemed like a big deal. And now when you look back upon them, it's really those little things gathered up and collected over time that create the abundance of life in its fullness. Not just the things that stand out, like the moment of a diagnosis, or the moment of a death, but the the things that ring, the things that vibrate in you, that you may not remember that time when that kid shared their lunch with you because you didn't have yours, you forgot yours, or someone moved over on a bus and gave you a spot to sit. Those kindness pieces we've gathered and collected and those just seemingly minute moments are really what provides us the depth to our chapters. In every stage and every phase and every turn of our wheels in our life. I wish I could say that I was inspired by the multiple commencement style speeches about here's three things of advice I'd give to you, here's a famous quote, here's a this, here's a that. Here's my imparted wisdom to you. I I was not inspired by that. Unfortunately. Not not Not that the speakers were dry, but they were. And >> [laughter] >> but but that there could be no better value that the value inside me was radiating. No greater understanding of depth of time passing as I sat thinking about 5 years earlier how we visited that campus and we looked around and how my kid said to me Yeah, it feels really good here. And how I advocated for that choice that I know in their hearts they wanted to be there even though they were getting a lot of pressure to go to another uh Big 10 school and um The advice was go with what feels good to you. Go with what feels like home. And I was sitting and listening to these talks and names being listed off and I was reminded of that space inside me, the value within me. And I didn't feel proud of my child's accomplishments or of my own, for that matter. For all the hustle and the scraping together and the all of the worry and the stress and the things. But the chapter of life that began that journey that ended yesterday. Five years of time. It wasn't just one chapter for them. It was many. It was a lifetime filled with experiences that are stepping stones to be able to help them grow and learn and me, too. Because during those same five years, I experienced my own changes, evolutions, and challenges. And that was during COVID. Like, that was right on the tail end of COVID. That was in 2021. Yeah. I was only a year into COVID, actually. Uh, yeah. So much. So many chapters. Some of them are tough reads, aren't they? Tough rememberings. And yet, really, it's it's about the book as a whole, isn't it? Your life as a whole. The compilation of experiences that you're having, that you've had, it's not about the judgments of the goods or the bads or the sorting things into this is a good accomplishment. This is something that I wish never happened and I never want to experience it again. No, that is not the point. The comparison is not Although I do know it's natural and that's sometimes the only way that we can really understand how great things really are just because we have the opportunities to decide for ourselves how we're going to interpret the experiences we've had, how we are going to write our chapters. We might not have control over the aspects of the experiences. We might not have had choices in the matters as they've unfolded, but we do have a choice in how we share our story with ourselves and how we understand that, how it resonates inside your blood, how it lives inside you. And how we, you, can make the moments monumental. Make them matter. Feel good when you can. Feel like home to yourself, not an enemy to yourself. Not a critic to yourself. But the champion of your story, the advocate of your light. That is the importance of this chapter and of all of them that create your life. You matter. Start acting like you matter to yourself. Start feeling into those spaces where maybe you haven't liked yourself. Maybe you need to forgive yourself. Maybe you need to stop the hate within your heart. That is festered regret of lost opportunity or whatever it is that is blaming and shaming inside your heart that is degrading you and grinding at the very existence of the love that you are. This is where the be kinder, be gentler speech comes in. You've heard it before, but the compassion for yourself, the gentleness to yourself, the just the respect in the way you treat yourself through your thoughts towards yourself will greatly influence the genre of story you are creating. How is this chapter unfolding? There are so many takes on the same thing as it happens, as it unfolds. Look at our country right now if you're in the US. There are so many different viewpoints, so many different perspectives on the exact same thing. And what really deeply matters is the integrity you have within the conversations and the dialogues, within the value within yourself. The conversations and the dialogues in yourself. The conversation and the dialogue, your thoughts, your mind is sharing with your heart. Collaborate within you. Get the mind and the heart together. Cohesive, supportive, one as much as it can. Because this chapter matters. And it can be beautiful if you let it. This is Bridget. Thank you so much for listening to Sunday Morning Coffee with Bridget. I hope you find some peace today. I hope you have room in your heart for more kindness to yourself, more gentleness, and the way that you think about or you frame your life experiences. So much love to you. Thanks for listening.
