Can You Crack UGC NET Without Coaching? Self Study vs Coaching vs ChatGPT | What Actully Works?
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video addresses the critical question of whether coaching institutes are essential for clearing the UGC NET exam, concluding that while not strictly necessary, they serve as a valuable guide similar to Google Maps. The speaker explains that statistics show an almost equal success rate between coached and self-studying candidates, indicating that one can definitely clear the exam without formal coaching. However, coaching provides direction on what to study, how to balance Paper One and Paper Two, and how much time to devote to each subject. For beginners who lack knowledge of the syllabus or working professionals with limited time, coaching offers structure, doubt-solving support, and discipline that might be difficult to maintain independently.
For students opting for self-study, the transcript emphasizes the importance of creating a tailored preparation system rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all approach. The speaker advises breaking down the vast syllabus into manageable topics, such as dividing units into hundreds of smaller subjects with a checklist to track progress. A key strategy highlighted is focusing on understanding concepts through real-life connections and explaining them in one's own words, rather than rote memorization or passively watching numerous YouTube videos. Additionally, students are urged to limit their resources to avoid confusion and ensure they can complete the syllabus within the available timeframe, ideally sticking to a single comprehensive book that covers the entire curriculum, includes previous year questions, and offers revision tools.
The role of Artificial Intelligence in self-preparation is also explored, with the consensus that AI is an excellent tool for simplifying complex topics, creating study plans, and generating practice questions but should not be relied upon for factual accuracy or as a complete substitute for human learning. The speaker warns that AI responses can vary and may contain errors regarding specific facts, making expert-written resources necessary for verification. Furthermore, the video stresses that self-study requires active practice, such as solving previous year questions immediately after reading a topic and taking regular mock tests to simulate exam conditions, rather than just consuming content without application.
Ultimately, the decision to pursue coaching or self-study should be based on an honest assessment of one's personal needs, discipline, and specific challenges. Coaching is particularly recommended for those who have failed multiple times, lack consistency, struggle with doubt-solving, or need external motivation to wake up early and stick to a routine. Conversely, disciplined students who can create their own schedules, manage resources effectively, and engage in regular revision and mock testing can successfully prepare on their own. The core message is that the right question is not whether coaching is needed, but rather what specific benefits one seeks from it and how to replicate those benefits through self-directed effort if chosen.

If a student is not able to clear NET for five times.
So that person is somehow
not able to crack,
we will not be able to wake up at 5:00 in the morning. We need an
external support that can lift us up. 10 types
of highlighters, 20 types of sketch pens, 10
good notebooks and they are like
from tomorrow onwards I will top the NET this time.
Are coaching really necessary to prepare for
UGC NET. Lying down on the bed, covered with a blanket and
comfortably watching videos and
videos after videos. And you are under this
illusion that is
AI a genuine substitute for
traditional methods of learning and preparing
for exams? How do you think it
actually helps the student or whether it does not
help.
Will a coaching institute help you
understand what to study?
What is important from the exam point of view? Which way to
read? And how much time should be given to things.
Because when I started
preparing for NET, I did not enroll in
any coaching institute. We
also need the books our five friends are reading. How to balance Paper One and Paper Two
? Because without this you will be
shooting arrows in the dark. We
both are making matar paneer ki sabji. Ok.
For the first time. Studying without coaching doesn't mean
studying without a plan.
Hello everyone. Welcome to another episode of our
series on UGC Net on its stocks. And
as always we have the one and only Dr.
Arpita Kharba with us. Once again Arpita
Pleasure to have you here. Thank you so much for
taking the time to do this. And today we are
going to talk about something which is probably a question that almost every
aspirant who is
preparing for UGC NET has is that is
coaching really necessary to prepare
for UGC NET? Sarpita will just straight away dive into that.
What Do
You Think? Do you really need to go to
coaching to prepare for UGC NET?
So, if you want a blanket statement from me
, so I would say that the answer is
no. It is not necessary to
clear NET along with coaching. Because if you
look at the numbers, if I
talk about the stats, then around 10 lakh students appear
for this exam every six months. Now
out of the 10 lakh students do all of them
take coaching or if we study the results
then I can tell about UGC NET English
because a lot of my
students are from that field. So I have seen that
almost equal number of students
qualify from both coaching and non-coaching. So it is
not at all true that coaching is the only way to get you through UGC NET. There
is only one way.
But having said that I would also want to give
an analogy that let's say if I am
travelling from Jaipur to Delhi and I do
not use Google Maps. So, in
that case, most likely, if I don't know
the route very well, I might take a lot of
wrong turns, I might kind of
take routes where a
shortcut could have been taken instead or which are very heavy
traffic areas, I will
try to go through that. Whereas if I have
Google Maps, then I have kind of a
direction that will lead me to my
destination faster and more efficiently. So that is exactly
what coaching does for
anybody that you get a direction but
just like in Google Maps I have to
take help from him but I have to
drive the car myself. I can't rely on
Google Maps saying that okay, now Google Maps
is going to do the driving for me.
Similarly, after the help you
get from coaching, you will have to reach your destination on your own.
So I think the right question wouldn't be, "Do
I need coaching?" The right question would be
what coaching does that is going to
benefit me? So how can coaching help me?
So I think or
okay but but you made a very interesting
point that still of all the people who are
qualified for the examination 50-50 is the
ratio of people who went to coaching and those who did
not go to coaching. So we are saying that it is
very practical
to be able to crack UGC NET even if you are not
going to the coaching institute.
Right. Right. So, Arpita, if coaching is
not really necessary to crack UGC NET,
you can still clear UGC NET without even
going to a coaching institute
then why do you think so many
students still opt for coaching
classes?
Ok. So I think I can put those students into two major buckets.
One is those
students who are complete beginners.
Those who do not know what to read and
how to read it. So for example, if I am
starting my workout journey and I am
going to the gym for the first time. So I
absolutely have no clue about all the machines
that are there. So for the first time I will need a trainer who can
tell me how to use the
machines? Otherwise, if I start
doing it myself, I might get injured. If I do it
myself I might not use the right
machines for me. So once just to get the hang
of things. People would need coaching.
Just Like We Need A Trainer In The Beginning
Of Our Fitness Journey. Because they will be able to tell you
what to do, how to do it,
how long to do it, how many repetitions to do.
Similarly, a coaching institute will help
you understand what to study,
what is important from the exam point of view
, how to study and how much
time to devote to each subject. Because a lot of
students have scenes that try to study on their own.
They kind of neglect
paper one which plays a very important role
for UGC NET preparation and to achieve
the target score. The second bucket includes
students who are in a time crunch.
So who has a time crunch? Generally
college students, working professionals,
people who are not full time aspirants. Maybe there is a
homemaker out there who
only has 2 hours of time. There might be a
student who is you know probably doing something simultaneously
with the net. And because
of that, the person has very limited amount
of time to study. There you need someone who can
provide a full structure that
you have got all this in one place. You just have to keep
going through the notes. And that's
exactly what I have done in my paper
one book also. That those students who are starting to study on their own, they do not want
coaching. So I have given a couple of
articles in the beginning of the book. In the
prelims section very in I have given
articles on how you can create your own
time table. Have given articles on what are
the major mistakes that students make during their
preparation journey? What things
can you keep in mind when you are
solving MCQs. So these are the things
that you get in coaching.
So these two things generally belong to these two buckets
for which students join coaching.
Ok. So Arpita you said coaching one of the
most important contribution of coaching
is guidance. If you have to specifically
explain to the listener what exactly that
guidance means, what it would be,
okay, so I think there are five major things. Number
one coaching tells you as I already mentioned
what to study because the syllabus is very huge.
What to read? Which book should I read from
? How much to read?
What else is there not to read?
What else is there not to read? Exactly. Second would be how to
study. How to make a time table
? How to carry out revision and PYQ practice
together?
How to balance Paper One and Paper Two? Because
without this you will be shooting arrows in the dark.
Number three and the
most important thing is doubt solving. Because a
lot of students who are preparing on
their own will stumble upon topics where
they will get confused. If I talk about
UGC NET Paper One let's say. So there are many
students who have a
lot of problems in research methodology. There is problem
in mathematical aptitude in logical reasoning.
Because they have never gone through this
subject ever before. So,
many doubts arise in those topics that
what is the difference between this sampling and this sampling?
I found this answer in logical reasoning but
why is this answer coming wrong? So all those
questions are kind of answered by the
teacher. But now there's a new ah development in
this is with AI in the picture. So now if you have any doubt
you can very well go to AI
and you can ask chat of GBT. Ok? I do
n't understand structuralism and post structuralism. So explain to me like
a fifth grade student. So he will
start you from the very basics. So that is
another benefit then on top of that discipline is
varied because people who are
in coaching institutes have this thing that
you study from Monday [nasal sound] to Friday, now you have a test on Sunday so
you will not take leave on Saturday. You
know I have to study for the test.
Whereas when we do it to ourselves, we
kind of become laid back. If
we do not get external push then we think okay, if
not today then we will do it tomorrow. But
if there is a test in the coaching institute then it has to be
given. So discipline is another thing.
And lastly I would say it
helps a lot in confidence building. Because
you are learning with a support group. You have
created an environment. You are preparing for that exam
consistently. So
somewhere you feel that okay well I am
on track because
I am understanding what the teacher is teaching. I have scored this much in the exam
as compared to my peers. When we
read it ourselves, we have this doubt whether
we are reading it correctly. Maybe
someone is reading more than me. Where do I
stand? That is why you know on
my platform if you see so I have given
this leader board system that when you
give mock test you get leader board
ranking so that you know where do
you stand in comparison to your
peers? So yah.
Thanks for clearly explaining what
exactly a coaching institute
contributes in the journey of the
aspirant. But now I ask the more difficult
question. Let's say if I am a student
and I do not have the permission to go to a coaching
institute. I know I don't even have the
time to go to coaching institutes and if I have
to bridge all of these gaps which might get created
without going to coaching
institutes can I and if yes how can I
actually bridge those gaps without going to
coaching institutes
without going to coaching right so as
we have talked till now that in coaching you are
getting a readymade system. Now if you
study on your own then you will have to create that system yourself.
One benefit is it is going to be tailored as per
your needs and
requirements so it is just like I go to
Shopper Stop. I might get a t
-shirt that fits me. Another approach could be
I can go to a tailor and get a T-shirt
tailored for me. So the fitting would definitely be
better in the second one. But it will have a
little more hustle because I have to get the
clothes. I have to give it the measurements to
the tailor and all that. Similar to that is how
a student is going to study if he is
studying on his own. So if I talk about
UGC NET preparation, then inside the coaching
you get everything preplanned. If
you study on your own, you have to collect those things.
Your understanding improves within that process. This is what I have
personally seen in my career
journey. Because when I started
preparing for NET, I did not enroll in
any coaching institute. I was doing it
on my own and I would accept the fact that when
I started my preparation for the
initial two months I was absolutely
confused about what to do. I
studied many such topics which are not covered in NET,
which are given in the syllabus but their importance is not that much
in the exam papers. I left out many such
topics which I thought were
not that important but when I saw the pre-queries later,
I saw that so many questions had come from there.
So, I made a lot of mistakes for 2 months
and after that I
somehow understood what is the right
approach. Because of which I got so much clarity
that I ended up opening my own
institute and I was able to mentor so many
students. Because I have seen the
mistakes that I have made. I have learnt
from those mistakes. So it makes you a
better person in general. And in that journey,
one thing that most students do
when they go for self-preparation
is
not understanding from which point
of view the examiner is making the paper. And
[nasal sound] now we do
n't have the resources to
go into his brain and do an X-ray. So a better
approach would be to look at the PYQs. By
looking at the end PYQs we understand what the
trend is. If the questions that are coming are
from this topic, then what kind of questions are they coming
? Is it surface level or very
in depth? And that's why I somehow feel that
a lot of students who get in touch
with me say that the PYQ book
plays a very important role for them.
Because that it kind of gives them an
idea and topic wise questions. It tells them
that this is a good topic. Out of these,
these types of questions have come in the last 10 years.
So you also start understanding a trend.
And that is very predictable. So it's
and that is very predictable. Absolutely
because if you see that a topic has
stopped coming then it will not come back suddenly, so
you can kind of neglect it
and that is why in the courseware book of
our paper one, I have given this
special marking of exam essential in
every chapter that in every chapter
whenever you open a chapter you will find that there are
three to four topics which are
marked as exam essential. That means these are the
topics that are trending.
Similarly, recently we have
introduced Trending Now boxes in
every chapter, in which we are giving those topics
which have suddenly been asked for the first time.
So they have
more chances of appearing in the upcoming exams.
So even if a student just looks at Exam Essentials and
Trending Now
in the book, he understands a lot about
which direction he has to move in.
Because this is the course book
with McGraw Hill when I was
writing it. So my intention was that
if someone does not want to take coaching then
how can he do self-preparation through a book.
Plus at the same time he
can avoid the errors that students generally make.
And to simplify it even more. I will give
another example. Let's say we both are
making matar paneer sabji. Ok? For the
first time. And you have joined a cooking
class.
You are being taught there. So, The Instructor
Is Kind of Telling You Everything What Can Go
Wrong. How to check if the gravy is well done.
How to check that paneer is well marinated
and all of that. I am learning on my own.
I have YouTube videos. I have
my grandmother and grandmother guiding me. So, it is
not that only you will be able to make it. I might also be
able to make it. I might take a
little more time. I might make a little more
errors in the process but somehow eventually we will both end
up making that recipe. So
similar to that is having an instructor
and not having an instructor.
So Arpita, if I as a student have
decided that I have to do self study.
I don't want to go to coaching. Where will I
begin and how will I create a system for
myself which will compensate for the loss
of not going to the coaching institute.
So, first of all I would recommend that
we divide the syllabus into small parts.
Rather than trying to tackle the
entire syllabus in one go because it is very
overwhelming. Especially for someone who doesn't have that
extra support. Because as soon as I
see you I think, my God,
how will such a big syllabus be covered. So an ideal
approach would be to break units also into
topics. That's what I have tried
doing in my book also that the 10 units I have
divided it into 33
chapters. So if you do one chapter per day, you
complete the entire syllabus in 33 days
without getting overwhelmed. Similar to that, I think
people can apply it in their
papers too. As well, whatever your
syllabus is, try to divide it. I would even say that if you have let's
paper two, be it
History or English, then you
divide it into 200-300 topics. You
divide 10 units into 200 topics
and you have a checklist with you and you keep
tick marking the topics that you have done. So,
you also get satisfaction from that that out of
200, I have completed 50 or
30 topics. And you know what is the final
finish line. That is one thing. Second, I would think that
students who generally
prepare on their own do not understand
how important a role understanding plays
in UGC NET. It won't happen through memorization. Because now if you see
the trend, the
trend is changing tremendously.
[nasal sound] Earlier there were
questions that came directly that
if you had memorized them, you could answer them.
Now they are making it tricky every
year. So now you will get Assertion Region questions.
You will get statement and reason based
questions. You will
get practical application based questions. So
if the understanding is not proper there then
you will get stuck. And understanding and
memorization are two different things. First
you understand the thing and then you memorize it because
memorization is what is
going to help you understand which of these four is
not an option. For this I would always suggest them that
try to
explain it in their own words. Once you've done a
[sound of clearing throat] topic.
Don't try to just reread it.
Keep the book aside and try to explain it to
somebody. Late you imagine that there
is a student. Yes, exactly. And you
try to see how much you remember or which
points you remember. And in this, the
most important thing that I tell the
students is that they should
read it by connecting it to real life so that they can understand
how it is being applied in real life.
That's why we have given a lot of
syntactic connections and examples in the
book, that even now in this conversation I
try to give a lot of analogies and
examples so that we can relate and understand that
this mistake happens in driving, so
this is what we are doing in UGC NET. This happens
while making Matar Paneer so that is what we are doing here.
So, it helps in remembering things quickly because
familiarity is developing. Plus
you understand better too.
Another thing that I think a lot of
students who study on their own
neglect is revision.
Because everyone thinks that first we will
complete the syllabus and then we will revise it.
But if you have studied continuously for four months
and you start revision in the fifth month, then
I can guarantee that whatever you
studied in the first month will be cleared from your mind.
100% [nasal sound]
That's why regular revision is the key. I always tell
my students, which is also in my online course,
that you should study for five days. Saturday
Sunday Just revise whatever you have studied
in these five days. What will happen is that due to the
repeated exposure effect of that thing in your mind,
that thing will
remain in your mind for a long time.
And there will be no anxiety a month before the exam that you do
n't remember anything. Ok?
That's why in our book we also have given those
plucked out charts that you can paste on the wall.
Now while coming and going, just keep looking at it so that
those points keep coming to your mind again and again.
Apart from this, if I have to say, I think another very important
mistake that a lot of students would make is that they
read from too many resources.
Because when you go to coaching, you
know that you have to study only what the teacher says.
When we study on our own, we
also need all the PDFs of every Telegram group. We
also need the books our five friends are reading. We
also have to read whatever our teachers have recommended. You can
also watch all the videos on YouTube. So,
amidst so many resources, you get confused
and you are not able to complete the syllabus.
If I read one chapter from 10 places,
I will keep doing chapter one for
a month.
So that's why you should give five days out of the initial 10 days in
which you go through all the
resources that you have.
Read each difficult topic one by one and try to see which one you can
understand. Which is the resource
where you are getting everything. You are
getting all the topics covered. You're getting
PYQs. You are getting revision
tools. Like we have given everything in our book like Chapter
Highlights, Plugin Charts, Quiz Stations,
Evaluation Zone, PYQs, 10 Years
Papers Set.
Video explanations age well.
Video explanations age well. Because this
is also a big challenge.
I have seen with many students that there are many
people who are auditory learners, when the
teacher is explaining, they
understand by listening with their ears. Many people are video
learners, visual learners,
they have seen the PPT and now the slides are printed.
Many people are kinesthetic and will only get it when
they write or do some experiment.
Try to incorporate all of these
into your study routine.
If students do this then you will
remember things more quickly. I think we all know
the essence of these logos that we see
everywhere. So why do we remember those logos, the McDonald's
logo or any other brand's logo so
quickly? Because I am
watching it again and again.
Visual aids are also being shown in different ways.
Looking at it in the magazine as well. Then on top of that we are
also listening to some jingle on the radio. So
we are involved in every way to understand that brand
again and again and that is why those things are
remembered. So I think similar to that is what we have
to apply in our study
routine as well.
So Arpita, you have worked with thousands of
aspirants over the last many many years.
If I have to ask you to give one specific mistake that almost every
student does in
self-study and how they can avoid that consistency, there are
many students who will
go to the stationery shop in the beginning and
buy so many things like
10 types of highlighters, 20 types of sketch pens,
10 good notebooks and they are like that now
from tomorrow onwards I will top the NET this time,
my study journey starts from tomorrow but the thing is that
you are looking at it like a marathon
or a sprint. If you are thinking of
making an unrealistic timetable that
from tomorrow I will study for 12 hours directly
regularly for the next six months. So that
means you are destined to go off track
because it is not sustainable. It is
not for anyone. Today, if I am told to
study regularly for 12 hours without
breaks, that is not possible. The
concept of That's Why Sunday was created. That's why the
concept of taking a break was created - that you
take a break before your body breaks down.
That is variant. So that is why you have to
study consistently and regularly. Now discipline will
play a very important role in it. Because
you have to create urgency for yourself.
You should know that this is your weekly target.
This has to be met out. If I studied less on any day, I would get
compensation the next day. Have to
give weekly test. Weekly revision has to be done. And
week on week progress has to be tracked.
You have to be very honest with yourself.
Very very honest. And you have to also
understand that this is a marathon. So
you have to concentrate a little on your studies
and also enjoy life.
And along with this, revision PYQ has to be carried
along. So I think
overall this is a major mistake which
I have seen in most of the students that
their one attempt gets wasted
because they study too much in the first 15
days. Then I don't even know that I have to appear for NET exam
also. I haven't even opened my books for 2 months.
Or you start procrastinating so much
that you tell yourself that from tomorrow you have to
study for 12 hours. So now you will
not feel like reading even for two minutes. At the same time,
if I said, okay, I have to
read only two pages today. So
my mind will support me in reading two pages. But
if I say that I have to
finish a book of total 100 pages today.
One unit of 100 pages has to be done. So my mind will give
me 100 reasons why I should not do it.
So finding that out and
building a preparation routine around it, I think that's the key. There is another thing that I have also
observed from the outside is that now days
and not now days actually it has been for quite some
time. Is that a lot of
students spend hours and hours and
hours just watching YouTube videos. And They
Call It Self Study. Do you think it is
sustainable or do you think it is? It actually yields
the kind of results that you are
expecting from a net aspirant. I don't think
so. Sir, YouTube videos will
help you in understanding. If there is any
topic, I watch a video of it.
I understood what the topic was. The
role of that video ends there. Now the next
role is that I have to remember that topic.
Memorization is something you
won't get from any YouTube video. You will have to do that
yourself. And it's a very
tiring process for the brain. Because you have to make
him remember some things. You will have to
read it again and again. You have to close the book and
ask yourself again. And we run away from this effort.
Watching YouTube videos is
simple, right? I lay down on the bed, covered with a blanket, and
comfortably watched videos,
watching video after video. And you are in this
illusion that you are studying. But do you mean that
after watching those 10 videos, we are
able to solve 10 PYQs
of that topic. If you are able to do it, then those
videos are working. But most of the
students I have seen will not be able to do it.
Because there is a difference between practicing and understanding.
Just like swimming.
If I read 10 books on swimming today, that will not give
me the confidence to dive into
the pool and swim. Right? I might know the basics by
reading a book. But the
next step would be to dive into the pool
and then to try and use those techniques.
And that is how I learned swimming. There is leg
work, there is breath work. I will
not be able to understand this by reading any book. I
recently I was reading a couple of books on
meditation. I am trying to learn meditation
and trying to incorporate it in my
life and I noticed that I
read a lot of books but still I could not meditate
and then there was this one day when I was like
I will not read any books anymore. Now
I am going to just try this technique
for the next 10 days. And the result I was
able to see in those 10 days was way more than just
reading the books. Because then you understand
how your mind is working?
What is he thinking? Be non-judgmental,
how to look at thoughts and all of those things,
practice is what is going to win the game
for you,
so there are so many books, there are 100s
of YouTube channels, there are so many, now you have
AI as well, there are so many resources that
a student can choose from, if they
decide to self-study, you would mind giving them
a recommendation on how they should go about
picking up the choices which are
best for them, I
think first of all, in any book or resource, it is
very important to find out that are
you able to understand the concept
from that particular book. During my
preparation there was this one book that was
highly recommended by professors and
PhD scholars and the name of the book was
David Dechies rather book means
set of two books. And That Kind of Gives the
Entire History of English Literature. So I
started reading it. I read the first
100 pages. I couldn't understand anything.
I vent back. I started reading it from
scratch, let's read it again. It is
possible that the language is such that you are not able to understand it.
And I did a lot of
experimentation with that book in order to see if
I could understand it. And
after 15 days I gave up. I was like I can't.
I can't do it. So I
went to a nearby book store. I ask them
that I am preparing for UGC NET.
Can you recommend some books? So he
showed me three-four books. William J.
Long Rutledge History of English Literature.
And I read a similar portion from those
books and I was able to see that I was
understanding it very well from the Rutledge book.
So I picked that up and I came
home. I started reading it. I covered
it. I was able to very smoothly understand everything.
And then I
started doing PYQs. I was also able to solve
a couple of PYQs which were
from that particular section of the book.
And then one day my friend called and she was like
hey you're not reading this David Day thing.
That Is What My Teacher Has
Recommended. Nobody can clear the UGC NET
without reading David Dechies. It's the bible
of UGC NET and all of those things and
I had second thoughts but I then went back
and remembered that I was not able to understand.
So this book is not made for me and then
I gave the exam and I was able to clear it
my friend who read David Achees could not.
So I am not saying that you know that
you will clear it from the book standard set by you.
Because it is very important to understand whether
you are able to understand that book or not. Now that
I am like I have tot more than 10,000
students in the last five seven years I now
understand that David why was I
not able to understand this thing? Because it is written
from a point of view of a research scholar, it contains
so many analogies and so
many complexities that
a beginner cannot understand it. A
beginner has to first understand the
basics and then build up on the
concepts with a book like David DeChiese.
So now I understand this. So I think this is one thing that
I would recommend to everybody, don't just
choose a book or a resource that
people are recommending. Try to see if
you are understanding things from it? Number two,
does that book have complete syllabus coverage?
Because you will find many such books
where some topics are not covered.
Does the book have PYQs so that you
can see whether you are
solving the questions from what you have read and most
importantly, does the book have revision
resources, tools and all these things so that your
preparation becomes easier. If you want it all in one
place, I think that's the best
resource. And that could be different for
everybody. Somebody might feel that I
understand this book because that is his learning
style. But the learning style of other people is
different. He may
not understand from that book. So understanding that there
is no one book that can guarantee it.
Because if that were the case then there would not have been
so many books in the market.
Everyone would read the same book and clear the exam.
It would have been like a 10th board
exam. That I have read CBSE NCERT. The
paper will come from there only. This is a
competitive exam. The syllabus is like an
ocean that you have no end to. You
can ask anything from anywhere. So I think yeah.
Understanding that will help.
So Arpita now we will talk about something which
of the course now takes the center stage when
you are talking about anything related
to self preparation which is of course AI
and you are anyway connected to
thousands of students who are
preparing. Ah and they would keep coming to
you asking. Can we just use AR to
proper this for other. What's
your take on that Arpita. Is AI a
genuine substitute for traditional methods
of learning and preparing for
exams? How do you think it actually
helps the student or where it does not
help.
So, I wouldn't say it's a substitute, but it
definitely is, and it's a wonderful tool that
students can use and not just
students. I think everyone in the sphere is everyone.
I recently
attended the Jaipur Literature Festival. In that, all
these authors were there and every panelist was
asking this question whether AI can
replace Prasoon Joshi was there. So he is like can
AI write lyrics now are
lyricists and singers now not required.
And of all that, they Greeks really said one thing: it's
an excellent tool that can help
you in whatever you're doing. But can it
replace a human definitely no. Why? So
in AI a lot of students who come to me they come to me saying that
ma'am you have told this answer
but AI is telling that I am
like ok so I do this activity with them I tell them that
ok you connect with me on Google Meet or ZM.
Let's do this
activity together. You put this question on AI.
Now you give the same question
to AI after some time. And then you ask me to
tell you the correct answer. And every response,
in every response it is changing the
correct answer. It's changing the
explanation as well as the right answer also.
So AI I would not say can be
useful if you want to cross check and
validate your answers because there are a lot of
blind spots there. There's a lot of
confusion out there, and AI doesn't yet understand
how to factually verify things.
But yes I would also say that if
you want to plan. Suppose you are a
working professional and you just have two
hours to study and you want someone to
make me a six months plan.
Definitely AI can be helpful. You can
give the entire time table of your day and ah
you know a rough routine and feed it on chat
GBT and just ask him that now I have to
prepare for UGC NET also. So
how can I make time? So he will make it complete for you and say
that
you should study in the morning hours. Come in the evening and just
revise. You can take mock tests on weekends.
So he will make the complete plan.
You have to make some changes in it. You can give that
prop. Another thing that is very very useful that I can do is
help in understanding any topic.
What is metacognition? Now I don't understand this. So you
can just say that explain metacognition
in simple language. He will simplify it for you.
If you want to practice PYQ
, then you
can use this question for practice that you can probably say
that I have covered this topic
Research Methodology now give me 10
questions from net point of view and
don't reveal the answers untill I
respond. So it will help you in the mock test. This will
help you in solving the confusion that arises among students somewhere or the other, the doubt that we talked about in the beginning,
what is the difference between structuralism and post structuralism
? Explain to me with examples. So
in these things AI is very helpful but if
you want to rely on AI for facts and
factual information like
when did any government regulation come,
what was the release date of Vividh Bharati, AI
may tell wrong things, so there you need a
reliable resource that is written by
experts and that is created by
experts so that the information reaches you correctly
otherwise you will read wrong things.
So Arpita are there situations ever situation like that when
you will generally just tell someone that
you know what coaching is
probably a better option for you to
prepare for this exam.
In many cases, when
students come to me, many students also ask questions on YouTube, then
somewhere I understand
what is the problem of this student which
cannot be solved without coaching.
For example, someone who failed net multiple
number of times. So we know that fundamentally
something is going wrong. Because
if a student is not able to clear NET for five times.
So that person is some how not
able to crack how to clear the exam. So
there you might need a mentor who can
probably change the direction and customize
the plan for you. So
for those who have failed NET many times, I would recommend
that you should use coaching.
Secondly, people who have a limited amount of
time. Because most or all of your time will be spent
in gathering resources. So it is always better that
you have an expert who can
help you. And otherwise if you can just
rely on one source. For example, a
lot of my students who are watching me on
YouTube would recommend that we take the UGC NET
Paper One book and we will
study only from this book. So you just have one
resource and you are studying from that. That is
fine. But somebody who would want to study late for
UGC NET paper in History and they are
handling multiple books or resources.
So coaching might help there.
People who have problem in consistency, there are some people who are not self
starters, that we will
not be able to wake up at 5:00 in the morning, we need an external
support which can wake us up, so I think
coaching is needed there. Many times it happens
with students that
this is their last attempt and they have to crack GRF.
So we know that they need that extra leverage, so it can be applied
there. So if I have to summarize,
if I have a
problem with discipline, a problem with doubt solving
or a problem with consistency, then
coaching can help you a lot here.
So you will have to ask
yourself what am I expecting
coaching to solve for me. If you are
not able to do that thing yourself then you need
coaching. Just joining this panic
that everyone is joining. All my
friends have joined and I will also have to do it
because all my friends have
done it or else without coaching one
cannot clear NET. If you have this belief then there is
no need for coaching for it.
You need to work on this belief.
Sense. Yeah.
So, my last question on this would be fee fee fee fee fee fee fee fee fee
for our learners who have
decided that we want to do self
study. Ah for Nat, if I had to ask you
what the five specific things they ca
n't compromise on are, what would they be?
First is a clear plan. Very Very
Studying without coaching doesn't mean studying
without a plan. Many students
think that if I am joining coaching then
I can study somehow. You have to have
a weekly timetable. You have to make a routine
for yourself and in what manner you will
cover which topics, when will you
complete what things, which units will
you cover less, it is
very important to make all this in the beginning and gradually
you keep fine tuning it as
you go in your preparation. Second I think is
limiting your resources. I have said that
multiple times in this conversation also that do
n't run after too many resources,
50 PDFs, your Google Drive is full, you have
so many resources, nothing will happen, that will just end up
confusing you and even
if you read all of them, then we should
ask ourselves whether we will have time for revision
after that or will we be
able to complete it in just four to five
months of time. There are many students of
mine who take my Paper One book along with
my Paper Two course, they have only two
resources and their
five months, six months are spent in it. So
if they take 10 more resources after this,
how will it be covered? A lot of
students were enrolled in my course, they
keep on asking me ma'am, apart from this my
friends have recommended this. So should I also
study that. So sometimes I would tell them
that it is not possible. Many times
I feel that if someone is a very good
student then I tell him to do
my course first. After that, in the time that is left,
you refer to your friends'
resources. And none of them ever had the time to go
to their friends' resources because the course
itself takes so much time. There are so
many topics that it will take
you four to five months to cover them one by one. So
limiting your resources is another thing. Then I
think PYQ practice is very
varied. We must not forget that. Whatever
students take my book, please tell them no about this thing.
I have given a complete article
explaining that after every topic
you have to solve the quiz session so that you can
know whether you are able to learn to apply what you have read.
If you
don't have a book, you are referring to some PDF
or something there, then try to
read a topic and then solve a few
PQs before moving ahead. Another
thing revision is very very crucial for
someone who is studying on their own. Because those
students do not practice regularly.
They do not have regular tests in coaching.
So when there are no tests,
you don't revise. You just read and leave.
So [nasal sound]
revise is variant. And the last thing would be to
start giving mock tests some time before the exam. Which is a full length mock test.
Set a three-hour timer so that you can
understand what mistakes you are making
that you can repeat on the day of the exam.
What mistake did you make in time management?
What silly mistakes did you make?
When anxiety becomes panicky, when the
timer is running in front of you and it is decreasing
, what mistakes are you making at that time
? To know them,
if you have given mock tests.
Also gave some five or ten mock tests. That's why you know we have also given those
online mock tests with our
PYQ book which is time and simulated
or.
Yes, absolutely. They replicate and
mimic the UGC NET exam pattern. And the
purpose of giving it was because when we were
curating that PYQ book, the reason why all of
us came together and we were like
that we have to give mock tests is because we want
that students should
practice well in this mode before giving the exam so that
they can understand what not to do in the exam.
[nasal sound]
So these are the things I think if you take care of those five things.
I will just repeat it once again.
Clear Plan Limited
Resources, PYQ Practice a
Wrong. So, rather than just giving the mock
test, looking at the score and just putting
it in the drawer, it is better that you sit with
the score and see how you can improve it
next time.
Thank you so much for that Arpita. And I
think that is the perfect note to end this because
in our next conversation we will be talking about what happens after
you
clear the UGC NET examination.
Great. Thank you so much. Thank you.
