Additionally, the project included an interactive map visualizing the global reach of participants beyond their home universities, extending even to Italy and the USA, alongside open repositories on Zenodo containing drafts, presentations, and a curated bibliography organized under Creative Commons licenses to ensure accessibility and replicability for others.
The course yielded significant pedagogical results by empowering students with critical thinking skills and digital autonomy while breaking down traditional barriers of language and distance. Student feedback highlighted how interacting with peers from different linguistic backgrounds helped them understand that the same problems can be interpreted differently depending on cultural context, a key insight when discussing complex topics like AI governance through Luhmann's abstract theories. Although some initial challenges arose regarding technical skills like using Markdown or writing in another language, these were overcome through extra support sessions, leading to high engagement where students actively shared resources and continued collaborating even after the course ended. Ultimately, the project demonstrated that open education is possible when built on principles of adaptability, care, and genuine collaboration, creating a replicable model for future multilingual academic initiatives.

Yeah. Oh, okay. Uh, thank you very much
Prana and thank you very much uh
everyone for being here and I say hello
to my colleague Arthur Dilva Stanford
who is uh joining us from Refe Brazil.
Thank you very much for being with us
today and uh we are going to present a
project that we developed uh at the
beginning of this year uh related with a
multilingual coil course. Uh then um all
the slides are already on the slack on
the okay on the on the application then
if you are interested you can find it
find it there. Okay. First of all um
what is a coil? A coil is a um way of
teaching. The name is collaborative
online international learning and it's a
high impact teaching and learning
methodology that started exactly during
the coh time and now it's a very
welldeveloped in different universities
around the world. Uh the objectives of a
call is a connected students and
professors across countries, cultures
and institutions. Uh with the idea of
encourage projectbased team oriented and
intercultural collaboration. Erh the
coil combines synchronous and uh
asynchronous online interaction and
supports multilingual and
multiddisciplinary exchange focuses on
shared learning goals not just joint eer
content. Then a coil is not a course
about international
internationalization. It's a course that
leaves it. And I think this is the most
e important at least for us. Why
borderless learning? Okay. because um
these course uh were organized between
three countries uh Colombia, Brazil and
Mexico and in two languages in
Portuguese and in Spanish across three
different disciplines
social sciences in general sociology and
law. Okay. And we were working with with
the graduate students co-creating across
time zones
uh students from master degree and PhD
uh and we built on their open pedagogy
and multilingual collaboration.
Okay. Um
um what is a coil course? What this co
was about? The title of the course was
algorithms, social systems and decisions
and the participants were students from
the univers
in Mexico which is my university
federal pero in Brazil which is the
university of Arthur who is with us here
today and universal
who is another author of this project he
and join us today. Okay. And in and in
the general information is that this was
a virtual synchronous and asynchronous
course uh that run ran through February
February 19 to June 18 of this year. And
at the at the end there were 24 students
that completed the course uh over 45
contact hours. Yes, contact hours. Okay.
we uh we were working in a pedagogical
framework
um in um with the different um states or
or principles. First of all, we were
working weekly with a synchronous
session every Wednesday during one
semester. It was very hard and h with in
two languages with a multilingual
facilitation in Spanish and Portuguese.
People who speak Spanish only speak
Spanish and Portuguese only speak
Portuguese. And as the languages are
pretty close and pretty similar, we made
our best in order to try to understand
[laughter] everybody. Okay. The
platforms that we use, we use a lot of
platform platforms but mainly we use a
synchron for the a synchronous
collaboration we use uh for developing
the oer we we made it in GitHub and we
use zoom of course and sautero among
others that I'm going to explain later
on and as the final project for the
students were to write a size or thesis
chapters or o collaborations all open
available in with um create common
licenses. The thing that I'm going to
present today is the the the OAR
collaborations that the students
developed al together. Okay. Um
um the results is made the results is
made available through an OEAR which was
developed in collaboration between
students and lecturers from different
countries, languages and disciplines.
And this this was the connect the the
content. Uh first of all you can find um
the uh the introduction a web page which
is the the introduction and uh this is
the entry point to all project materials
in a bilingual navigation and this is a
update version of this OAR h this is the
fourth h iteration of this OAR is the
different students but the students that
work before with this OAR were were
undergrad graduate students and now we
start to to work with with the graduate
postgrad postgraduate students then in
the QR code you can link the different
parts of the of the OAR
okay then the other part is that you can
find where you can find the credits all
students and faculty from Mexico Brazil
and and Colombia were identified and
were visible authorship on the website
with open acknowledgement of all erh
contributions
and um erh as part of I don't know to to
try to identify where where we were from
uh uh we have the community and map with
an interactive participant map built
with the student data and visualiz
visualizing learning as a network in
this map uh which is interactive you can
see uh that although the students were
enrolled at these three universities h
the participan students reside or they
they are from different Latin American
countries. H all the points that you can
find in this map is the different
countries that the people join to this
uh coil. Uh h they receive in different
Latin American countries with one even
in the USA and another in Italy. Then we
can say that it's a like a it was like a
global course um rolled by three
universities. Okay. Which ones were the
tools that we use and the infrastructure
that we used to develop this um uh um
this OAR? Uh we use um mainly open tools
to build a crossborder learning.
First of all uh we use GitHub uh as a
side back end. Then in in in the disc
code you can find all the repository uh
where is made all this o and the
repository is open and if you want to
use this I don't know to clone and to
make your your own course or just just
to give some ideas you can join to the
to the repository that is in um in
um is is in a github and h is made under
the beautiful jacquel er
erh platforms. Okay. Then this was like
a the the the main the main part is
this. Then I okay I don't know I I make
like a problem here. Okay. Let me oh
okay. Um then besides the o uh we uh use
an open repository that is cited in
zenodo and in this uh in in in this
repository you can find all the works
that was developed in the course I don't
know the different sis the different I
don't know the the draft of the chapters
of each ties and different ideas mainly
the presentations that we use for the
course and every single things you can
find it here in the in the senodo
or open repository for for this coil
course. And besides that h we uh have
available in this link a created
bibliography that is um um uh organized
in Sautero in a a public um um
collection of Sautero where you can find
not only the the bibliography that were
used for this course but the different
biblography about luminous system theory
and all this this uh this topic and
besides that there are different tools
and uh and the structure that we use all
in licensed in creative commons in every
one of these um core codes you can find
the moral padlet where different person
um share their their thoughts a guacal
where you can find different resources
of internet resources timeline GS uh
which is a super interesting timeline of
um I don't know the relationships
between different um uh philosophic
perspective perspective related with
lumen's the lumen perspective and the
YouTube uh uh collection where you can
find all the sessions open available.
Okay. Then all these is um these lessons
learned help us to uh find um um a
collaborator um an intercultural
collaboration foster critical thinking
and the use of uh different open tools
of and platforms like GitHub and empower
academic autonomy and let me let me tell
you that let people even to be involved
with some um um uh digital
uh tools because most of them are of
mainly of social sciences. The
asynchronous and synchronous rhythm was
a key for the success and given credit
and visibility motivate the
participation of different students. the
students embrace authorship of sher and
and oar
um I don't know how is my time but I
hope I can just share with you some
student voices related with this this
project h one of the of the students
said said thanks to the course I
discovered forms of analysis that I had
not considered in my students of
governance and justice h other one said
I had never participated in a project
where I could contribute to an
educational website and see my ideas
published with credit. They were super
happy with this. And um uh another one
said, "I interacting with people from
different countries and languages helped
me understand how the same problem can
be interpreted differently depending on
the context and this is among different
other um voices that you can even find
there. Um as final thought thoughts I
can say that um the most important thing
of this open educational resource is it
was a resource developed by ourselves
during the course as part of the course
and it's a replicable model. We have
been developed this with different
students and in this case with with
undergraduate students with three
different countries and two different
languages. erh is based on openness,
adaptability and care and it's a
multilingual open education possible and
um okay then the only thing that I can

Yes, I I can like share the the the
resource in general. uh the the the o
has the fourth uh number because it's
the fourth interaction that we have with
different students and all is related
with um with the lumen's theory and you
know this is this is important because
um okay I'm a professor of of sociology
like the professor Arthur uh all of us
are a sociologist and you know uh
illuman is a very difficult uh
philosopher know it's really difficult
to read him and to try to involve people
then in this way it's it's um I don't
know it's a different ideas in order to
try to keep the attention of students
and try to I don't know learning at the
same time that they are doing somethingh
and I don't know it's a little bit more
difficult because lumen is kind of
abstract but with the with the um with
this kind of tools we made a great great
um I don't ideas. I don't know, Arthur,
if you want to share something in
Portuguese and I can translate your your
ideas.
>> No, I don't know. Uh for me the more
importance for this course is uh
distinct professors uh speaking about
the same same issues same time and many
students uh try to observe and
understand
uh how different prophets would uh
understand or observe in this teaching
uh
how can I say in different way uh the
the point of view uh discusses more
about the
artificial intelligence in actuality
how it could be observed by uh system
theory
uh in many students is
in Finnish this course uh understand
better how can develop research about
these ideas
it's for me is so important in in this
course Mexico and Colombia and Brazil uh
discourse and develop research about
this point of view it's very interesting
for me

the I don't know the distance and the
language there are no barrier no we we
were together with this and we can we
could build a project together and I
don't know an o uh with the
collaboration of the students.

Probably the the different part is No,
the difficult part is to see, oh, I'm
going to start to uh to write like in
another language. But um all of them
were super interested in doing and they
continue even even today they continue
share resources and share things and uh
and and some of them are professors even
in different universities because they
are
mainly um master degree or PhD uh
students and some of them are interested
in try to develop this kind of resources
in their own uh educational or ped
pedagogical practice. Yes. But it's kind
of weird, but it's not really difficult.
