Video summary

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, and Nutrition officially inaugurated Breastfeeding Awareness Month with a ceremony at Micoud Secondary School, gathering healthcare professionals, mothers, and community members to emphasize the critical role of breastfeeding in providing children with an optimal start in life. Under the theme "Breastfeeding for a Sustainable Start in Life," the event underscored the shared responsibility required to build environments where mothers feel informed, empowered, and supported. Chief Nutritionist Lisa Hunt opened by stating that successful breastfeeding is not merely a maternal burden but a collective effort involving families, healthcare providers, employers, communities, and policymakers who must ensure every mother receives accurate, evidence-based information and skilled guidance from trained professionals. District Medical Officer Dr. Irana Judan joined the discussion by encouraging all families to embrace breastfeeding while highlighting its extensive benefits for everyone involved. Speaking as both a medical officer and a father, he noted that these advantages extend beyond infant health to include economic savings, strengthened relationships, and emotional stability for parents. He explained that supporting breastfeeding helps maintain peace within the home, fosters love between partners, and keeps minds in a state of emotional equilibrium, thereby benefiting fathers just as much as mothers through improved family dynamics and overall well-being. Minister Moses Jn. Baptiste praised healthcare workers for their consistent advocacy over the years and reinforced the government's stance that diet and nutrition are essential components of good health rather than secondary concerns. He argued that achieving a holistic approach to wellness requires moving beyond just medication and medical advice, placing nutrition at the center stage alongside other initiatives. The Minister affirmed that supporting breastfeeding is integral to this broader vision of one health, ensuring that dietary needs remain a priority in public policy and community action throughout the month-long campaign. Throughout Breastfeeding Awareness Month, the Ministry will continue its efforts by promoting education and raising awareness about the importance of lactation support across various sectors. The initiative aims to encourage families, workplaces, and communities to create supportive environments that enable mothers to breastfeed successfully with confidence and dignity. By fostering partnerships with national and regional stakeholders and implementing baby-friendly initiatives, the ministry seeks to protect and promote breastfeeding through comprehensive strategies including healthcare worker training and community education campaigns led by dedicated staff like Unika Koy from the Communications Unit.
