Video summary

Molly McCann discusses her current dual life as a professional boxer and a business owner, sharing insights into her recent venture opening a sandwich shop in Garston after earning money from her fighting career. She explains the challenges of balancing full-time athletic training with managing a business, noting that while she does not make sandwiches herself, she is deeply involved in operations and marketing to support her team. McCann reflects on her transition from mixed martial arts back to boxing, highlighting how the sport has been less physically devastating to her aging body compared to MMA, allowing her to continue competing at a high level with a renewed sense of purpose and legacy. The conversation shifts to the significance of fighting at Croke Park for Katie Taylor's final bout, an event McCann describes as emotionally overwhelming and culturally resonant given her Irish heritage. She contrasts the intense atmosphere of Irish sporting events with the typical boxing environment in the UK, emphasizing that while she has achieved major victories in places like Las Vegas and Boston, returning to fight in Ireland represents a unique pinnacle for her career. McCann also touches on her upcoming title shot in November or December, viewing it as the final piece needed to fully validate her identity as a champion who can compete with anyone in the world. Beyond boxing, McCann shares personal anecdotes about her football fandom, specifically her experiences attending Everton matches and interacting with former players like Tim Cahill and Michael Essien. She recounts humorous and sometimes frustrating moments from recent games, including a tackle by Wayne Bridge that she jokingly claims was malicious, and her admiration for the club's connection to the global community through figures like Ryan Reynolds. Despite the physical toll of running on hard surfaces and maintaining a strict diet, she remains optimistic about future opportunities, whether that involves bringing boxing nights back to Goodison Park or continuing to inspire fans with her resilience and unwavering spirit.

You're nice. >> Yeah. >> Good. >> Both that skinny now, aren't we? Nearly falling through this um the crack. >> at the food now and I just have to like sniff it. >> Do you You like gluten Celia? >> No, no, no. Just a goodbye. Just just like um I can't the calorie count it. But like I can still eat what I want. It's just like I do like marathons. I mean that's >> Well, but you eating for cake >> I don't know what you're doing but obviously marathons like I'm I'm in I've got what I've got like five weeks left. And it's >> The next two two weeks are heavy builds. >> So for me it's like from three days in the gym and four days runs. >> And if you don't do them gym sessions, don't you feel that your body completely like you start getting niggles and all that? No, but I know when I was doing Hydrox stuff. >> Also, I'm I'm 47. >> Oh, yeah. I know but I've been fighting for 20 years so like I'm three years old as you. >> So I was in I started in um started doing it properly last December. Only gym and running and within two weeks I was in a chiropractor. And it cost it's the chiropractor so far cost me well over a grand. Like I have to come down I have to come down here and and go >> Yeah, cuz you can't do your whole life lads and then no. >> No. >> You can't not train your whole life and then think I'm going to do that cuz your muscles aren't they? Like Do you know what I mean? >> Listen to me trying to talk to you on an equal level. >> I mean I bet you can run faster than me though. >> definitely run I can run faster than Jane Krakowski. >> Can you? Come on lads. >> Come on lads. Come on. Let's get into it. You saying Sylvia Dolly Gallani? >> I can't even say your name. >> someone's going to say them. >> Some bird from Poland. >> Welcome to Toffee TV. We are in the Baltic Market where you have a Molly McCann people Molly McCann by the way. Welcome her back to the show. >> Yeah. >> Um you have a little a little a little guy >> a little restaurant here? >> Yeah, well we won't be going to Box Park, will we lads? Cuz of Derby days. >> Less less >> Less of that, yeah. No, we For those who don't know, I used to work at Subway. >> Yeah. >> And when I made a bit of money in the fighting, I thought let's make a little sandwich shop on the pasta gaff and we called it Paul Pesse and that means meatball in Italian. >> Nice. So your So you wrote the place. Let me just tell you this. So you wrote the place up in Garston. Needs a better We need like a more posh name for Garston, don't we? >> Well, Joel doesn't name He's not having it's Garston. He's like, "No, it's not Garston." I'm like, "What is it then? What area does he?" And he's like, "You're not claiming Walton. You're not claiming Allerton." >> We have to come up with like short names, do we? >> I know what Garston is. Well, and Joel's rolls are four tooth I went "It's more of a bakery, Joel, and we can't have like another Paul Pesse. We wanted to coffee and get into coffee." And I just said Well, and Joel like He told me not to discriminate and told a fire up throwing them in. Can't throwing them in. >> So last last year my last birthday >> Yeah. >> It was last last last December. And it was a Monday and I decided I don't normally work and I decided to work because we beat Forest on the Saturday and I was like, "I want to go in and do a couple of videos." So on my own, I just went down to your gaff, got a nice sandwich and a coffee. I just just ate them in the car. >> And do you remember what one it was? >> I can't, you know. >> Was it the meat one or >> Yeah, it was a meat one, yeah. But it was that me little birthday treat. >> I hadn't been before. >> Yeah. >> I was No, what was mad I was expecting you to be >> Do you know what? I I I come here twice a week. And then I'll go there once a week. Yes. Um because being a [ __ ] full-time athlete and running businesses, you don't you know you don't hear of it cuz two hours we don't Do you know what I mean? But I do try me best. >> No, that's brilliant, that. You're keeping you you know, keeping your your you know, you've got got something afterwards, haven't you? >> Yeah, and and like me boxing gym's only there, but when I'm coming here, it's not like I'm just coming in to work. It's like everyone's here and then I've got to take pictures and speak and thank people for it like support the business. It's rough. Emotionally, it's tiring. No, I mean, I'm not often to make the sandwiches, but >> Yeah. >> I'm still every day often to work like manage everything. Do you know what I mean? >> Yeah. So to fifth fight on the 5th of September. >> Oh, there we go. Yeah, little moment. >> What's um what's it been like like transitioning from I mean, obviously you had all like sort of the you put all the hard work in before you went to UFC. Like and that was when you did that that was like that was hard work. That was that was like Cage Warriors. That was like proper like >> I've I've come from fighting at Wavertree Park, the Everton Red Everton Sports Centre, Skem Sports Centre to headline in the Echo and then finally getting in the UF and then we are MSG, Boston, Vegas like >> Um even during COVID when you done the like fight when you done the fight and you got the fighter of the day and you got like the money which is obviously amazing. But like even stuff like that which went round the world cuz no one had anything else to do. Not like they weren't going to watch you anyway. But like you've you've gone from all that and obviously you've come back to very much your roots again. How has that been? >> It's been brilliant because it's not as devastating on the body as much of the time. Like the lads in the gym wouldn't be nasty, but they treat me on the level that I have to be treated. But I I was training with them from when they were 17. So when they're 27 and I'm dealing with men, the bodies were just different. It was so heavy and harsh. But moving to boxing, I think I It was It's different just remembering I was such a boxer in MMA and I got taken out of me because I just kept taken down. To then bring it back when it's like I feel like I'm giving Sheamus Coleman years in the in boxing. Do you know what I mean? Like I'm just like you're not going to put me down. I'm just I'm going to keep coming and you know what you're going to get with me. But like the biggest differences to overcome what was just like responding in a different way. In MMA I'd throw big overhands. Where if you do that in boxing, you get pinged three times. Do you know what I mean? An MMA fight is 5-minute rounds. Boxing's two. And the pay scale from boxing to MMA, everyone goes, "Ah, I bet you're balling." I was like, "I was so well paid in the UFC." And I said starting again in boxing, it's rough. It is not what you think it is. >> Do you think though, cuz obviously when you were in UFC, it was sort of a case of chasing contracts as well, wasn't it? Did you feel like that pressure's gone now a little bit or and you're you're building up into something that you're enjoying it because you are building up into it? >> I chose Matchroom to box for legacy over what I wanted now and he could give me these nights that what I wanted. Could I have gone to lesser promotions for a hell of a lot more money or different combat sports for more money? Yeah, but like you say, I wanted to do this. I had five fights left on my UFC contract when I stepped away. Do you know what I mean? And normally you get put put on garden leave for a year, so you can't just retire to sign for someone else. But then let me out to go and fight for Eddie. And then after this fight, I think it'll be time to be like, "Right, Eddie, you've absolutely got your bang for your buck. Let's sort the contracts out now. It's like, come on." Cuz I won't be able to retire anytime soon if not to live on the mean. >> You get your boss fees. >> I know, but it's I want to live off boss fees every day. >> So, you're fighting fighting Silvia Dall'Acqua. >> Well, I can't say any names. I won't fight for you, Eddie. >> even know if I am. Just said it. >> I think you are, yeah. Yeah. >> I mean before we talk about the fight, I mean, Croke Park? I mean I'm just like a couple weeks ago, I was watching like Mayo win there in the All-Ireland. >> Yeah. >> Yeah. I mean, I'm that just I mean, anyone >> The whole of Ireland wanted Mayo to win though. Do you know what I mean? >> But like Croke Park, if people don't understand, maybe they sort of understand from stuff like that is is that I don't think we can quite understand in this country. I mean, we're all right. You've come from Irish lineage, yes, we all know. >> I'm married to basically an Irish woman. >> Yeah. >> Um you know, we understand what how important Croke Park is to Irish people. It doesn't always transcend to us over here though, even though we're only a little bit of water. So, to go and fight there on your cousin's Katie Taylor's final fight. >> Yeah. >> What I mean, what how was that? >> I don't know how I can top it. Like >> I do, but I'm going to come on to that. >> Yeah, okay. Yeah, yeah, yeah. But um there are no words. There are no words on Do you know like Scousers get a bad rap sometimes cuz when we're so passionate about something, it like annoys the rest of the world. >> Yeah. Yeah. >> Like to Dublin and like to Ireland and what they've been through, we stand on the same kinds of moral lines as what they do. And our integrity is very much the same as theirs cuz the same things kind of happened to this city. >> Yeah. >> In similar ways >> and not to the magnitude as what happens to to them, but I think that's where we align on where we're made from them. And our culture and their culture is the same, isn't it? But when you know the history about Croke Park and it's like I was only there last year watching Coldplay and I remember saying to me gay and Katie and Gemma was there from the 1878. I was like Imagine one day fighting there. Like I said them words on that night and like a year or two later like it was in September we went there to watch Coldplay. It's happening and like I can't put it into words. There are no words. >> How many times have you said that though? Like put it out there and just going to Just put it out there like because obviously your last boxing fight was in Liverpool. >> Yeah. >> Jamie Webster's >> I've always said when I fight in Liverpool Webster will walk out. I just knew >> How many times have you done Have you done Have you done that where it's like the you've made the impossible possible? I mean just >> even just like fighting in the UFC. Yeah. Just like that's that's When when you think about things like that, that's that's the absolute pinnacle of the sport you were in. You and Paddy were fighting in like Liverpool and like not even like >> Yeah, in the Olympia. >> Remember you had me on this and I was fighting in the Olympia. >> playing PlayStation games in our studio. >> And then after the one it ended up in Wolfsburg or was it Lyon at some of the games? >> We were in I saw you there and What was it? Lyon? Was it Lyon? Yeah, I saw you in Lyon and you were just walking about. >> I know I shouldn't I don't even know how to say it. Literally picked a crate up out the shop, walked out like this where could no one see me and you just had to come like that. I was like Oh my god. >> I wouldn't dare film you. >> You used to call the cops. I was like Safe to say that was our last encounter in [ __ ] Europe. Um I don't know if I'll be going again. No, but um Do you know what? Do you know that picture of me and it is picture of me and Bramley Moore now? And they're doing something and it says like you can't beat someone who won't give up. I must be like a fly on [ __ ] Like people keep batting it off. Someone said, "Molly, you've had One of me mates, Lauren, says you've had more comebacks than Tito." And I was like, "Well, you [ __ ] off, Lauren." But Do you know? Like I just think my dream's my dream. So, until I've fully fulfilled it, I'm not I'm not going to stop. No, I I've I've never You know what I mean? I Why would you? >> I know. I said when it it keeps on happening. >> Yeah. >> It keeps on happening. So I I you got to be careful that you don't put the dream and what it what it's going to feel like ahead of the fact that you do have to fight someone who's won their last three fights. >> Yeah, so when I fought someone in Liverpool and Everton's on the big kit, we fought them. Webster was walking me out. I was in I was having dinner the night before and me mates were there and I was like "The job isn't done. Get me out of this." And actually Oh, yeah, we finally done No, I was meant to do this. Like the job is tomorrow night and it's the same. Still, it goes like Central Area title, English title, British title. She's Central Area champion. Obviously, you can't fight for Central Area, British, or English in Ireland. I wouldn't do it anyway. >> You couldn't do that. >> I know. You couldn't do that. >> You wanted to give me your opinion now. I would have done it. But um Listen, anyone who comes to to fight me knows what they After every fight, [ __ ] goes viral. They get more fights. They look good. It's how it works. So I never get like these >> You're like You know what you are? You're like the Wrexham of boxing. It's like anyone who's attached to you just gets bigger off the back of you. >> I know. That's a >> You should get Ryan Reynolds back You're sorting your life out. Oh, come on, lads. Come on, sort this sister out. It's um I actually don't watch me opponents. When I used to watch them in MMA, I'd study them two hours and I'd just get them going. So, now we'll focus on me, but last night said to me again, "Fran, do you want to watch me opponents?" It was half nine at night. She's like, "For [ __ ] sake, Molly. Are we going to go to sleep?" Do you know like cuz I'll be all like that and I'll watch that and I was like she's got better than every fight she's had. She's had 65 rounds of boxing and I've had like 24. She's had 10 rounds. She's won a title. It is a step up. >> Yeah. >> And you don't look past this cuz it's the most important, but and now after this I get a title in November, December. So, for me, I look at this as this is my last little pin in the cap to be like I am who I say I am. Tony Yeboah. >> And it's you know where it is as well. Obviously, it's going to inspire you, isn't it? >> Listen, mate. And you know Do you know when I've fought on some of them cards and you've been in them places when the crowd goes, you know, like it's like when we used to have a rock and I'd I'd go to some park. It's a fort. Like you feed off that and and my supporters have always brought that for me. >> Yeah. That Yeah, it's good I can't even I can't even like think about that. You know what I mean? Like like I've I've been lucky to to do some boss stuff. Obviously, doing this and following Evan. And you do when you when you when you are just putting those things out there did they come back home, did they? So, so and then that leads me on to it's like me next point is obviously you mentioned there about another contract and obviously Eddie and obviously the zone and Back at Goodison, needs a boxing night, doesn't he? Do you know what I mean? It does need a boxing night. We obviously had Tony got his nights at Goodison and that's obviously just lit come a little bit too early for you. Yeah. Even if it had just been um >> Yeah, I would have never just made it to know what I mean. M&A or whatever it would have just been going on there. But is that something that you just think You know, you've had you I mean to be fair to you to you and to the club you have worked brilliantly together and the club have been brilliant. >> Don't forget like we're talking 10 years, 11 years. But we've had talks with Hiltzik and son love about like ambassadorship or moving forward like that. The dream with Matchroom is to bring it back here for me for a world title. I'm just going to ask that Joe McGrail and Peter McGrail win on the 5th and the 12th of September. We all get one more win at the end of the year and then I'm telling you it'll have to be in July when the season's over. Goodison can happen anytime. >> Yeah. >> It has to be July >> Yeah. >> for a world title. But if we all get we all win a title up by the end of this year, that puts three trophies >> Yeah. >> in the mix. >> So do >> And I'm telling you Everton said they would they'd do it and Matchroom said they would. I'll be like Tony, Tony you can even be in me corner, lads. Tony could do like I don't know he could do like one of those >> And he puts it on. Do you see when the Goodison club like closed down on the last game of the season? He had a full job then anyway, this year. >> Surely there's a YouTuber out there that he can knock >> I mean there's loads I could put forward for him. And I think he'd love it secretly, wouldn't he? >> he would. Of course he would. I seen him was he was getting in a bit of a eat or die in last week, wasn't he, about fights being in the UK over? So isn't it >> I like I could see that but I agree I'm like with him on that. Why do we have to give everything to them in the UFC when we had the fights on pay-per-view in England? We always had to do it Vegas time and it's like but why? >> Yeah, yeah. >> It's awful to do it. I had to face off after it for the in the morning. I said, "Don't know when it's going to be [ __ ] legs smashed then." So, what do you mean? Got volleyed in the bits. The girls didn't even like kick me in the right places. >> It's an odd life. >> Oh, isn't it? Just want to be a baby, lads. >> [laughter] >> We say no for 3 years. >> I know. We don't drink anymore, do we, lads? Sober now. >> what, athletes? >> Yeah. >> We're athletes, so and I've got the footage on it. >> You hear what I say? She just called me an athlete. So, just coming back to that, I mean, just coming back to Everton, I mean, are we obviously you got all this air, but how are you feeling about the season and >> Do you know what? When I have high hopes, we really don't live up to them, so what I'm going to think is if we could just finalize on a few more players. Jack, [ __ ] just sort it out, will you? Stop just winding us up and sort it out and then I'm just going to take every game as it comes and just enjoy the weekends with me friends and me family. And that's all I'm taking from this season because I get too invested. >> Yeah. >> And then it ruins me fight come. >> Yeah, you got jobs to do. >> Do you know what? Like, what about me last fight? I won. And then that's our beer. >> Yeah. >> Do you know what? The T4 on the beginning, I was like me and me mom to face every derby we sat with each other at the new stadium. We like that. I'm like, "Oh my god, we're going to [ __ ] win. We're going to get your And then I was just like, it just all unravels. I was like, I just can't take a lot of that in fight come. >> No, you can only drink >> No, drink above Right, the whole season I've been able to eat there. That fight day, I got the salt and pepper share the box to myself. Have you seen them? >> Yeah. >> Like 24 pounds. Eating all the share the box. And then I was like, "Oh, yes." Normally I'm on bourbon [ __ ] Pepsi Max. And it's just you can't have it all. I don't know what we done in a previous life sometimes. >> No, I I we were either we had a I had a really really good life. >> Yeah. >> Or I don't know. We had We had to do something We done something. Yeah, we we must yeah. Don't know. This is our penance, but but we you know, we've had good times. >> We'll put that one on your gravestone as well, will we? >> We're Well, you know, you're living proof that you can be an Evertonian and still, you know, in five in in have the Yeah, enjoy life a little bit. >> What What's the best one I'm in America? [ __ ] Everton's massive there. Do you know what I mean? And I always meet great fans when I'm over there. I'm sorry. Let's rewind. I know this What about me on Saturdays with Tim Cahill? He's like my new best mate. >> I know. I'll be honest with you, right? It does When I watch This is a really awful thing to say, but it it makes me want to be like dead famous just so I can play footy with you. >> I went to get on I literally sat there. And obviously, known Wayne for years and totally took an accident where she took me down cuz we was all neighbors. And then Tim's just like, "Well, Mom, take my number, Mom." And wouldn't leave me side. And like all week, it was like it was four blues just sat together. Which to me is a foul. >> just come in at the last minute? >> I just like you Wayne will tell you Wayne's story. What he was [ __ ] hanging out of his hole just trying to be a I just like lads. Face night he got blazed and then he was just [ __ ] he was wounded. Do you know what I mean? And it was a funny cuz he was after to play through his hangover like every like loads of them every night all the ex-pros have a bevy together catch up like old times. But they're not young boys anymore. >> no, no, no. >> And like Danny Zaira was looking at him and he's just sat there and the sweat's just dripping out and he's not even doing anything. I wouldn't like it lads. I just like it. Do you know what I mean? But I said to him all week Wayne, I'm going to snap you. He got subbed off. You're not allowed to be subbed back on. He come back on and as I got the ball, he just went through the back of me and took me down. I went, you bastard. >> When you look at like Tim Cahill you can and like he's still got it mate. >> Me and him when we was playing we was assisting each other and I was like, [ __ ] hell. I've just scored off of Tim Cahill's assist. And then I think I even got an assist on for him in the match and I was like, oh he didn't even go and punch the thing. I was dying to go and punch the flag with him. So like I was like, oh bastard ball. >> Again, you don't would never like think would you? You should never think of things like that could happen and and yet they do. >> And then he was FaceTiming me with one of the Tai Tuivasa one of the UFC lads when they had the Australia UFC. FaceTiming me with his kids cuz his kids had just been to my buffet and I love me music and that. And he was going Molly look who we're with and I was like, oh my god Tim Cahill's like saying mom, can you get on this? Doesn't feel real but then do you know when you you'll know cuz you've met them all. When you're around them >> I know what you mean stay my mate. >> No, I suppose. >> stay with in fact some of them like Should they? >> No, they just know if they if they need like some hands putting on someone for them they've got a little enforcement >> And I've got booties. >> I've got booties. I've got [ __ ] >> [laughter] >> What a life. >> I know. And I bet you got to keep the 40 boots as well didn't you? Yeah, I gave them to the Do you know when the kids go, can I have your top and have your boots? So I gave all the kids away ball. When I went in the changing room, do you know your name thing that's about yeah I robbed Cahill's, I robbed Usain Bolt. I was just taking everyone's and then in me pub in our and me the garden I like to put it all around the Just >> like >> Is it boss and knowing that you'll probably get another chance to do that again? >> Yeah, but I don't think as for morale I was like Molly of Motivator like I had the tunes on every day but that ground was so hard. I don't think I could do it again but I'm fighting. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Cuz my back Oh my god, do you know when you've run on rock You don't have feet You know these things >> Of course. >> Honestly >> Now, I got to play at El Difice and in the show man. >> I often say was >> And the reason it was dead weird cuz I've played at El Difice and I've played loads of times but it was boss seeing like the likes of So Ryan Rooney was there and my Rooney scores. As you'll know if you've been on the social media cuz he shares it every day but I was made up for him and it was boss to seeing >> Sort of mean >> someone else getting a first opportunity I was thinking I might get a chance to play it again. I might not get a chance here but to see like Ryan and some of the other lads >> you get your face ones? >> dance to play It was yeah, it was boss like so for you to play Ryan with Tim Cahill and all the other people in and the people you are playing against as well. Oh my god. >> Do you know who was me best mate that week? Michael Essien. I went lads why do you got six toes? He's got the biggest bunion on his foot so from years of playing his knees are shot but anytime he turns it on and he couldn't get over my music and I just kept making him laugh and he was like I thought you were sound here. >> Well, I think we could chat all day but we're going to leave it there cuz you've got lots of stuff to do and you're still in camp and you've got a huge fight coming up so 5th of September >> Tune in and just for me toffees and me Irish toffees If you always look at the emblem, it's always the same Paddy's Day um logo that I have on me kids cuz we're not technically allowed to have the badge on. So if you don't think just cuz I'm wearing green for some fights the toffees are I'll bring me on the kids always says no softness in this year optimum. >> Yeah, big thanks to Molly for joining us on Toffee TV and good luck. >> Sloss, the [ __ ] Toffees.
