Bournemouth V Everton | Match Preview

Welcome to Toffee TV. It's a match preview, Bournemouth versus Everton. A trip to the South Coast for our first away game of the season. Buzz, how are we How are we feeling about this one? >> It's rough. It's a rough one, this, isn't it? >> Mhm. >> Obviously, played at Preston and done well. Think it'll be slightly different game. >> Mhm. >> At Bournemouth, they're they're a good side, aren't they? They're very, very >> Smaller ground, though. >> Smaller ground, to be fair. But they'll also That means they'll be less >> Everton winning there. Um >> No, they're a good team. They've been brilliant the last couple of years, haven't they? Obviously, had Eriola, um who's popped up now on Merseyside. How have they done it? They've done a really good job there. They need built a really exciting team. And it's a tough place. You know, we won there last year. It was the first time we've won there in the league. And Jack Grealish was the deflect deflected shot. But actually, on the night, Everton were the better side and should have won anyway. Um >> Mhm. >> But they are a good side, and you know, but it's it's not a game you look forward to. It's something that >> No, they've been our bogey team, haven't they, really? And uh you know, take away that win, we haven't had much joy down there, have we? >> We had a cup final. >> Yeah, where we comprehensively beat them that day, but they really have been our bogey side, and we saw it when they came >> knocked us out the FA Cup last year. >> When they came to uh when they came to Hill Dickinson and uh turned us over. >> Yeah. Yeah. But And in many ways, again, we can say this about a few clubs, but you look at the way they're run, and you just it's so frustrating, isn't it, that how well they're running, you know? I mean, yeah, listen, it's yet to be seen how this manager gets on. >> Mhm. >> But you just feel the continuity of these clubs and the way they're run, and there's no um there doesn't seem to be any w- issues behind the scenes till there is, of course. But there never seems to be it just seems to be a nice conveyor belt of players, the manager getting on with it, the people behind the scenes getting on with it, and trying to build a successful club, bringing in players from abroad that have never played in the Premier League before, going straight in, and then making huge amounts of money on them when when they get shipped off to bigger clubs, and then replacing them. And it's just like What Why Why Why haven't we tried to to do something like that? But, they >> It's difficult, isn't it, with all the upheaval at Everton? >> So, they've actually got something going like that. And And I mentioned the ground, and obviously the the now investing in the ground, and they're going to try they're going to make it try and make it a 20 to 25,000 season, and and that you look at them now and think, not only are they a stable Premier League club, but now they're in Europe, obviously. You know, they missed They missed out on a Champions League place by, you know, I think it was What was it? The last game of the season? The The result just not got quite going their way. Um that would have meant they fell to to to where they were, but they've they've done incredibly well, and as I said, it's it's it's hard to look at these teams sometimes and just think, how did we end up in the position we we've ended up in, while these clubs have have thrived and been and have bucked the trend? It is. They have to They There's got to be some sort of reason and a >> founder as well as that. They have been in the Championship a few times and have had to start from a lower base. What they've done is, of course, when you're in the Championship, your your whole wage bill, everything comes right down. So, your revenues give you that nice buffer. They've also got good managers in who've done a good job, you know, Gary O'Neil took Eddie Howe started it, didn't he? And moved on Gary O'Neil. Look like, you know, Scott Parker come in and it got them and then got beat at Liverpool 9-0 and then said he couldn't these players couldn't stay up and Gary O'Neil proved them wrong there and then everyone was scratching their head why did he change Gary O'Neil and Iraola come in and took them up a level and I think since Bill Foley come in he has put them on a a different course. They bought well they've been better than us but I think very much like Brighton and Brentford the demand isn't quite like the same. They open They open any Bournemouth fan watching it isn't saying that as being disrespectful cuz it isn't I'm not don't mean it that way. I just mean the demand like if you if you're comparing it with us is our fans are high rate and the way we've been run the decisions we've made the upheaval the and we've had to pay Premier League wages maybe to players who haven't deserved it at times and haven't performed as well and therefore you're always chasing your tail to get to like a reset like Bournemouth where you start doing everything right. Might have took a relegation and no one wants to be relegated so it's a real difficult one but you can't help but admire the way they're run admire the way the football they play and the way they go about the business. They lost start of last season three of the back four months and they were still brilliant and they've lost a manager and they still lost Saman in January and things like that and they still managed to be absolutely fantastic so they've done they've done absolutely [clears throat] brilliant. It's a new era for them cuz Marco Rose is coming but he is a good manager as well. And when you look at them you just think they're probably just going to carry on. I watched them at City a bit of the game last weekend. City were obviously City sort of dominated but they were a real they were a threat all and the energy off them and the way they played. They've done a good job. >> I mean this season's going to obviously test them with them being in Europe isn't it? That's that's a new test for them playing that many games. >> Yeah, yeah. >> Like last season they went on a real when we beat them they were on a on a really bad run. >> Mhm. >> And then they turned that around obviously in the second half of season went on an unbelievable run. And you just You can't you you you You can't see them that happening because of Europe. Like being able to um for that to sort of manifest itself again, go from one thing to another. So it is going to be difficult but but isn't that just brilliant though for them that having the chance to be involved in that and the challenge of it and taking it open. You mentioned the owner there and we we said it many years ago. You know, Everton the idea of buying another club in Europe and using that as a as a as a feeder [clears throat] for or someone where you can, you know, where you can buy players and put players and use that as part of your the process of buying and selling and and and trying to stay away from the PSR issues of what they were and obviously it's different now, but Now, they've done brilliantly well and and as you mentioned there it's going to be a very very tough game on on Saturday. It's not somewhere we normally travel. It always just a it's like it is the the the ground thing is mad. I still I still find it mad that like I think they were told years ago that they weren't allowed to have a ground that big in the Premier League and every year they just seem to have got away with it. And I I'll never understand why the away fans should be punished for that. It's it it drives me mad. If you haven't got a ground that's big enough, that's your fault. So we should have 3,000 away fans there on Saturday, not not less than 1,000. It's just absolute nonsense, but that plays all its part in it, but it's going to be it is going to be a tough game and obviously it's been a really good start to the season, but this is going to be this is going to be a big test. >> That's a huge test cuz they're so like you said they're so settled. They're a difficult team to play against. It's a tight ground. You know, the pitch is really close to the the stands and everything. But you've got to go and do your job and like you said last last season. We just had an absolutely terrible performance against Newcastle at home. We got battered. And then Aboubakar was missing for it sorry Aboubakar didn't play it. Was it Newcastle? >> Yeah, we played Newcastle. We were we got battered. >> Got battered. And Aboubakar was terrible. >> And then when we went to Bournemouth but he had to play in the six, didn't he? And that night we were brilliant. We should have won it we comfortably deserved to win. We hit the bar, we hit the post. Keeper made a really good stop from Barry with the shoulder. We'd a couple of other chances before we got the goal. We we absolutely dominated them which we don't really we've never really done that at Bournemouth. And that was a brilliant result. And it'll need something like that. It may be not maybe we won't get the same domination obviously, but we need to just grind it out. It's tough. It's a tough place to go and >> The irony of that night was James Garner played right back and Jake O'Brien played center back. >> The And there we are still with no with well Jake O'Brien probably won't play and we haven't got a right back so >> There you go. But listen, it's it is a game Everton can get something out of but it it is a it's going to be a >> like a it feels like a big weekend for Everton isn't it? As in like not only this game but off the pitch you know, the next three or four days it just feels like so much up in the air and you mentioned there the right the dreaded word right back like if Everton fans are bringing a right back in this this >> The fans are going to go absolutely Ince and Jagielka's. >> Ince and Jagielka's and not I'm not a I'm not 100% well I know that everyone's not sold on Grealish coming back because of the players we've already got. I think if it comes down to Ince and Jagielka and Grealish staying or coming sorry I think a lot of people would just want Ince and Jagielka to stay. >> Just it's just it's all a bit >> It feels like a big weekend for Everton isn't it? So you know, that the results you don't want to put the saying you don't want to put like it the results on one side and go oh yeah, but it's more the chance of winning on this huge this game's huge. The mood would be massively affected if we were to get the win. Like it would, you know, if we could go win the first two games in the Premier League, yeah. And then And then you're looking at the last couple of days in the window and it it it does People's moods are obviously set by what happens on the football pitch. And even even if I haven't got shot, I think it's raw. It'd be I I might I'm willing to be amazing and we can win the game, absolutely. But even a draw at goal height is a it's a positive still momentum still building. But no, you're right. It It's this feels like feels like a big a big five days this. The game and then the [music] window >> Especially when you look at the mood of Moyes as well. >> See what I mean as well? I I don't Again, it's it just feels like I'm in a different universe at the minute with everything we've gone through. We just won the opening three games and it still feels like things are about to >> This is why I hate This is what I've said this all the time. This is why I don't like this transfer window season. Especially this year with the World Cup being so long. In fact, I think when if there's a World Cup going on and it goes so long, it might be better to just say the transfer window it shut before I know people go well it doesn't make sense if it goes longer. Well, I'd rather leave it open. So it doesn't shut. Or shut it earlier. I think when it's a a smaller window, I think people are more focused to get deals done. And therefore you force people's hands and I think that isn't a bad thing. I think it's not a bad thing to force everybody's hand. It's bad for players. It's bad for clubs. Bad for fans. That you're just sitting there going what's going on? Like if Illiman Ndiaye is going to go then I'd rather he went last day and got what we got what we needed and the window shut and you're going you know what? Doesn't matter now. These are our players till January the >> There's loads of reasons, isn't it? >> And we'll get We'll get through when all the teams are Yeah. Exactly the same, aren't they? They'll be in the same boat come You know, we just need to know our squad for the rest of the season. Let's have a little look at Bournemouth's team that we've beaten at Manchester City last week. They had the only Antoine Silva, the only real new addition there, wasn't it? He's coming, he's a really good defender. Um They're obviously without Junior Stanislas, who was fantastic last season. A lot of big clubs were looking at him as well, weren't they? But Like you said, they were they were energetic, they worked hard, they pressed, you know, they pressed well. City it took them, you know. I think they only scored about the 80th. >> Yeah. >> 80th minute or whatever it was was a set piece from the corner. That set piece the guy had the free kick equalizer and obviously pushed on and won it. You felt once they equalized the momentum was with them and you know, they knew they needed to get the win, but it was it was a good start for Bournemouth in terms of performance, not results. Obviously, they'll be devastated the way it they lost it at the end, but >> Mhm. >> they they showed enough there to know that they're going to give teams a problem again. >> Yeah. And then with Well, James has picked out Ryan as the star player. Let's have a little look at him. You obviously saw him last season. He'll be there you go. 15 appearances for Bournemouth 13 last season, got five goals. He's actually 2.91, got two assists as well, created 14 chances and an average rating of 7.25. His jewel success of 40.7. Obviously, 20 I think he is coming. And makes those did sort of make a a mockery of this. >> Yeah. >> He can't. You've got to have two played in the Premier League. And I know, listen, David Moyes is a good manager, but there are a few managers and he is one of them who believes that you have to play in the Premier League to prove yourself before you can do it. There's a lot of other managers who don't subscribe to that and have been have had great success and had great success not only maybe not on the pitches in winning trophies, but success is in bringing these players in, they perform really well They managed to sell a player for three or four times the the value that they got them for. Brighton are brilliant at it. Brentford have done it. Remember Thomas Frank all those years ago, the same. You can play football, you can play in the Premier League if you've got the right attributes. So, it's about buying players. Having confidence in your scouting network. Find the right attributes, get them in. This doesn't seem like an Everton thing at the moment, but there you go. So, yeah, it's going to be a tough game. We know it's going to be a tough game. The real first wheel test of the season having obviously a home game which we always fancy ourselves. Preston away, if we had the right attitude it should always be a win. But, this feels like the real one. And as we've just said, the weekend feels like it's massive, absolutely massive. What do you What would you do with the midfield? Cuz obviously James Garner done there 25, then he had 65, I think, didn't he against Preston, something like that. Obviously, Hayden Hackney wasn't available for Preston, but he ate himself a bit of Sophie, didn't he? I think He looked happy. The pair fight Sophie. EFL one. Are you tempted to put Garner straight in? It depends on how fit he is, doesn't it? It depends on how fit he is. And if he is Obviously, I think it would be a straight swap between him and Hackney. So, it just depends on how fit he is. I think if he is fit, he'll play. Cuz I think he's one of Hackney be on the bench. I think Hackney be on the bench cuz Moi is already down. Talked. Hackney so And then watch George back in. With the blink. And J I think that's their that's their the stance. to be back as well. Yeah. That's how it look. I think so, yeah. And what you think with What did you think it was interesting you don't like that Bethel didn't get a second at Preston? Just because I'm thinking a third game in the week for Tierno Ball or is he going to throw a big massive surprise and throw Bethel in the start? I don't know how it is. Imagine an Everton center forward finishing the first week of the season with six goals. Well, I'll look at it. You're back in for another brace. You're halfway there, aren't you? You're half Nobody Imagine an Everton player with six goals at the end of the first week. Do you know what I mean? Five I'd take it. No, if he got five, it'd be amazing, but like when you talk when you think about Everton, say he's in the last few years, I know how long it's taking him to get to that point. He's got 40 shots. He's got four goals already in in two games. This is how players end up with 15 to 20 goals, isn't it? It's when you go, "Oh my god, did he get that many in that season?" So, yeah, cuz he scored in that competition and that competition. And you you I I just think the door is shut for better. I really do. And I think if Everton can sell him over the weekend, they will sell him. It's who It's who did get in. Now, I think obviously they wanted that. But you think it'd be the Richarlison would make sense. Although frankly you know he's just been linked I don't know how strong that is. No, I haven't watched them on eight or nine occasions. It's how quickly you could get it over the line and then they could get Richarlison if it wasn't Richarlison if it was another like Premier League player. The problem with like Richarlison is if it was a loan it'd make more sense, but he's in the last year of his contract. They do have an option. So, they took the option out and then sent him on loan to us with you know, then maybe that would make sense for everybody, but but as I said I think I think there's lots to be done. So, let's get this game won out the way. Put it to bed, you know, be lovely. Top of the league. Be lovely. Even if we're joint top of the league. I'll take that. But you know joint top now. So, I'm saying keep our position. If we're joint top I'll take that at the end of the at the end of the weekend and and move on. So, let us know your thoughts in the comments on this one.
