Bijan Robinson, Kendal Daniels and other Falcons speaks to media post-practice | Press Conference
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The Atlanta Falcons players expressed high excitement and readiness as they transitioned from training camp into the regular season, emphasizing that while pre-season was enjoyable, the upcoming games represent the true test of their preparation. Offensive lineman Bijan Robinson highlighted the team's eagerness to execute their game plan against a formidable Pittsburgh Steelers defense led by Aaron Rodgers, noting that the real challenge begins now. He praised the offensive staff and his teammates for being prepared to put their product to work immediately, acknowledging that the shift from practice speed to full-game intensity is a significant hurdle they are ready to overcome through focused execution.
Defensive leaders Kendal Daniels and Avon Robinson discussed the unique dynamics of facing veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who has played for twenty years in the league while the players are just starting their professional careers. They expressed deep respect for Rodgers' longevity and intelligence, viewing the matchup as a blessing rather than just an obstacle. The brothers also touched on the emotional significance of playing together for the first time at the professional level, describing it as a special moment that validates their shared journey and hard work since growing up watching each other's careers.
Kendal Daniels reflected on his path to becoming a starter after overcoming injuries and spending months away from the field, crediting his mentorship with veteran defensive end Divine DeBarge for helping him regain confidence and focus. He explained that his return involved a gradual rebuilding of physical strength through specific drills before rejoining full group practices, but he remains eager to compete live against top-tier offensive talent. Daniels emphasized that despite the external noise regarding the quarterback position, the team's standard is built on a strong running game and trust among teammates, which will ultimately silence critics through high-level execution.
The Falcons players collectively addressed the challenges of the first week of the season, particularly playing away from home, but maintained that their mindset remains unchanged regardless of location. They stressed the importance of controlling what they can control while staying true to their identity as a fast, physical unit that does not rely solely on one dimension of play. With a mix of experienced veterans and eager rookies like Daniels and Robinson, the defense aims to present a unified front that supports its offensive counterparts, ensuring that every player feels comfortable and ready to contribute immediately in Week One.

How you feeling heading Sunday?
>> Feel great. Um, you know, pre preseason
is is fun. Just, you know, to get the
the training camp going, but, you know,
now now's the real the real thing. And,
you know, it's I was just telling uh I
was just telling Drake, I was like, when
the when the fields turned this way on
the field, that means it's it's time to
go. So, uh, so I'm I'm I know we're all
really excited. I'm really excited to
get going.
>> Offensively, I mean, how how happy are
you with the way where you guys kind of
are right now.
>> Yeah, I'm I'm very happy. Um, you know,
now it's just, you know, we have the
product. We've we've been doing it. Uh,
it's been looking great in practice,
but, uh, now it's time to, you know, go
go put it to show and go have fun doing
it. And I know Tommy and, you know,
everybody on the offensive staff is is
ready to, you know, get to the real to
the real game, get to the to the real
play calling and so we can go just go
out there and execute it. But I know for
us as a offense, like we're just we're
just anxious, man, like to just go out
there and just, you know, put it put the
product to the to work.
>> How do you assess?
>> Oh, go ahead.
>> When when Tua got here, he mentioned you
reached out to him like right away.
>> Why was it important to you that?
>> I mean, one, it's just it's important to
welcome somebody uh and make them feel
welcome um as soon as it happens. And I
know that, you know, there's a lot of
things that go into that. Um, when you
join a new team and, you know, when you
enter a new a new building. So, you
know, for me, like as one of the leaders
of the team, um, and just as a brother,
uh, of him, you know, I just wanted to
make sure that he he just felt
comfortable and knowing that like
whatever he needed, you know, I got him.
Or if he needed like a direction or
something like that in in this building,
you know, I got him. So, you know, I
think it's always good to just make make
your teammates feel welcome. um him or
anybody else that comes up in here uh
because you know we're a family and and
they got to feel that family atmosphere
you know right away.
>> Yeah. How do you assess the uh Steeler
defense? People make a big deal of the
edges but Patrick Queen sitting there in
the middle at linebacker.
>> Yeah. I think I think they're really
good. Uh respect all all the guys on
that defense. You know, they've been
playing this game a long time. So, you
know, they have one of the best
greatest, you know, one of the best
defensive players to play the game. and
and TJ Watt and just everybody else on
that defense that that makes it go. But
like you said, I respect Patrick Queen a
lot as a linebacker and I can't wait to,
you know, go up against him. Um, you
know, I think he, you know, is a part of
making that defense, you know, what it
is and and making it go these these past
years. So, you know, I'm ready to go out
there and, you know, I love playing
against, you know, good great
linebackers. Um, so I think it's going
to be a it's going to be a fun matchup.
>> What's the biggest thing that you have
to go through? didn't play in the
preseason games and the speed in the
games is different and now you're going
to be in game speed and you know they're
going to be tearing at the ball and all
that kind of stuff. What do you remind
yourself and what do you have to go
through to get yourself ready to play
game speed? Yeah, I mean it's it all
starts in practice and I appreciate you
know Kevin and you know I know that I
didn't play the game but um he makes
sure he makes sure that the defense is
always ripping up the ball thinning up
um like it's a like it's a game tackle
and you know me making moves uh or
getting vertical in real time. So, you
know, I know that I haven't played
preseason in a long time, but always
just make sure that in practice, every
single rep that I take is a game rep.
And, you know, I'm I'm looking at the
defenders and I'm, you know, trying to
pick angles and trying to pick quarters
and and just slowing the game down in
real time in practice because I know
when the when the game comes, um, you
know, that's when all my things that I
practice and all my cues, uh, come to
life, um, out there. anybody that's
watched you thinks the game moves pretty
slow anyway based on what you've shown
us the first three seasons. How much has
it continued to slow down for you and
seeing coverage and seeing how teams
want to play?
>> Yeah, it's uh it's it's been a great
process. Um you know, me and my coach
talk coach Petri and like in college
that first year in my freshman year the
game was fast, everything was moving at
full speed and then my second third year
like it it completely slowed down for
me. And then same thing in the NFL. um
you know that first year like I was
trying to let the game slow down for me
and then the second third year like you
know that's what I'm that's what I'm
trying to elevate into reading all the
coverages reading first second level
reads um in the run and pass game and
then you know a big thing that I did
last year that I started last year was
just knowing where the free hitter is
every single play like making sure I
know where that free hitter is for every
run uh for every run run play because it
just it just helped my game out so much
and and it completely slowed slowed the
game down for me because I know every
single play where the guy I got to make
a miss or the guy I got to break a
tackle on, you know, I know where he's
at before it even starts. So, that's
good.
>> A lot of guys say it feels like, you
know, they get that first hit, first
sack, and then they feel like, "All
right, it's good time for you." Like,
what is kind of that moment feel like,
"All right, like I'm back."
>> Um, I think I think it's the first hit,
too. Um, or like when a big play
happens, you know, I know that, you
know, that's that's the start of the
season right there. Um, but it's it's
either a pass protection or or like like
I said, like if that big play happens or
just the first tackle. I know that first
tackle I'm like, "All right, I'm I'm
ready to go." Like, let's let's do this.
>> What was your confidence? Um, what's
your confidence in Tua as the starting
quarterback? Obviously, you know, he
>> Yeah. What do you think he can do week
one with this team?
>> I think he'll he, you know, he has he
came from a lot of talent, so, you know,
it's it's cool that he has a lot of
talent around him. Um, and I think it's
going to make him a lot a lot more
confident knowing that. And, you know,
me and two will talk all the time on the
field and we talk about, you know,
angles, where to get the ball out, like
when to get the ball out. Um, but it's
just him having that trust in us that
when when he puts the ball in our hands,
like that's when we, you know, got to
use our God-given talents and and make
it happen. Um, because that's that's
what we're supposed to do. and you know
he he's aware of it and you know we talk
but I know he talks to all the receivers
you know all the tight ends like so it's
it's cool that he can give us the ball
at anywhere on the field and and trust
us to to make a play um and you know I'm
not really big on like catch possession
catching like it's you got to you got to
try to try to get in the end zone so you
know I think he he knows that's where
that's what we're about
>> says the quarterback's best friend is a
great run game so do you take like a
little bit of pride of knowing that you
can maybe take a little bit of pressure
off on him if like you guys are
outstanding that game. Like how do you
>> Yeah, absolutely. That's that's the
standard here. That's the standard that
we set here and you know it doesn't
matter who's at quarterback, you know,
as long as they trust us in that run
game and you know with the guys up
front. Um you know obviously they
they've excelled uh all of them. Um and
and with with Chris and you know birds
of the guards and then obviously with
Jon coming in you know and knowing the
standard and where he's came from you
know he's he's won the championships. He
knows what it looks like. So um it's
it's it's a cool thing with and even
with news um and then obviously you know
the iron man Jake but uh those guys are
the guys that make it go and you know I
I my job is to make them look good but
then to has to know like that's what
we're here to do so it can make it
easier on him. um in the passing game.
>> What's it been like just for this team
and for you hearing so much external
noise about the quarterback position
here because I know you obviously get so
much national attention when you do
these interviews and it's like one of
the first things they kind of ask you.
What's it been like for you to kind of
navigate that situation?
>> Yeah, I just I just make sure I'm here
to support them. Um you know, no matter
what cuz I know the past like couple
years, you know, it was quarterback
competition. Um, but I I know for my job
is to make sure that they're they're
supported whether I talk to other people
or talk to other media or stuff like
that. Um, so they can so they can just
feel confident going into it no matter
who's you know who the guy is obviously
is to us. So like making sure that he's
you know where he needs to be mentally.
Um but yeah, I I told them like I'm just
here to serve man. um and to make sure
that you guys are at your your best your
best self and make sure Tua goes out
there Sunday, you know, super confident
in all of us and just ready to go.
>> And is that part of it too? Like having
so many position players around Tua that
have can kind of help enable that
success. Is that something that you guys
have taken on like okay we can maybe
silence those conversations externally
if we are able to do our jobs?
>> Absolutely. like you know the the
execution is is where the fun's at and
when we start executing at a high level
and then really nobody can say nothing
and all you can do is just watch. Um but
that's that's on us to to make sure that
whatever play call that they have like
we executed at a at a really high level.
Um because then then when the noise gets
silenced like you know what else what
else can you say all all we can do is
just put in the work. So it's it's
everything's on us. You know we have to
go in the game prepare. We have to go in
the game ready to uh execute at at all
costs, run or pass. Um and then that's
that's when everything else takes care
of itself.
>> Couple more. Along those lines, uh Cam
Hayward was on the Rich Eisen show
earlier this week and he said, you know,
you take John Robinson, you combine with
Bill Callahan, the offensive line, and
he said, you know, it's going to keep a
lot of people up at night. Do you think
that's kind of the ceiling for what this
group can do?
>> Yeah, I mean, there's, you know,
obviously we got to go out there and do
it. Um, you know, I I felt I felt very
confident in this off seasonason and and
you know, this this run game, man. Um,
you know, obviously Bill is is the
legend and, you know, it's it's cool
learning from him because, you know,
I've I've learned so many things that I
haven't even, you know, thought of. Um,
but he he's had so many great running
backs. He has so many great run games,
so many great experiences with with the
O line. Um, yeah, I know he's like the
best the best that it gets when it comes
to, you know, coaching the offensive
line, uh, in the run game, but, you
know, it's for me it wasn't even about
that. Like, I I admire him as a as a
coach, as a person, but, you know, just
just seeing how smart he is and and
learning from a lot of different
schemes, a lot of different ways of
getting the ball in space, like it's
it's really cool. Um, seeing the things
that he does for for this offense.
>> You some new wrinkles to what you guys
are going to be doing in the ground
game. What excites you about the
prospect of what you guys are going to
bring to the table in the ground game
this year?
>> You know, there's a lot of possibilities
of, you know, things that we can do. Um,
you know, with Burge, like dude, dude is
funny. You know, he he was smiling at me
the other day and and we had a we had a
run in practice and he was just like
he's like, "B like I ain't seen this
before." And I was like, "Bro, I I know,
man. Like I I'm so excited, too." Um,
but I I I could tell like, you know,
everybody's so committed to it. Um, you
know, and it and it just sets up the
pass, sets up everything else, sets up
the energy in on the defense, like, you
know, that that that's what gets
everybody going on the team. Um, and
just being physical and and doing it for
four quarters. But yeah, I'm like
anxious now cuz we we ran it so long in
in practice now and I just want to just
go out there in the game and, you know,
put it, you know, put it to life. Um,
all right, Kendall. I I know that we we
talked to you periodically on and off
throughout training camp just about
like,
>> you know, really asserting yourself and
and really fighting for for a spot. And
I know the dev truck came out yesterday
and you're you're the guy alongside
Divine. What did that mean to you? And
and what do you feel like you showed
over the course of the last couple of
months to to
>> um It's very exciting. You know, it was
good to see that of I wouldn't say I
mean hard work paying off. you know, the
the long summer that I had, the injury
that I had to go through and and the
combine and everything. Seeing the long
road it took to get here, you know, it
was a long road. The offseason really
wasn't offseason, you know, trying to
find a job and then you get in here and
a whole bunch of older guys and then you
you work your tail off and you just put
your head down and work and then you're
told that you're going to be the starter
and then it kind of restarts everything.
You know, you don't you're not at the
finish line yet. So you still have to
have a lot more to go, but it was very
exciting.
>> How much did I talked to Divine before
you came out here, how much did his
mentorship, getting to know him and
seeing how he plays really help you
along in the process?
>> Um, it helps me a lot, you know, being
out there to be able to talk to somebody
that's been able
>> to play a long time and play the
position and, you know, he helps me a
lot and he's able to make the calls and
he's the green dot when we're out there.
So, helps me calm down and um really
just focus in on what I have and he's
talking to the defensive lineman and all
that. So, it's been good to be able to
hear him and how he communicates and how
he communicates with the back end. So,
um I'm just there to help him and we're
there to help each other.
>> I would imagine you guys are probably
one of the taller and
>> yeah,
>> linebacker players in the league. How
much does that help you guys do you
think? Uh, it probably helps us a lot
just be able to, you know, move out in
space and be able to move all around and
get on the line of scrimmage and be able
to move around in space and, you know,
use our length to our advantage. It's
it's good because you can't really
target either or or if we're like in a a
different package, either of us can go
guard the tight end or anything. So,
it's it's fun to be able to have
somebody like that.
>> But, it'll be fun to see how we play
through the season.
>> In Miami, it looked like you and Harold
were kind of playing in playing out a
lot. Is that the way you think it'll be
in season? You going to play, you know,
all three downs? You have
>> I don't know. I haven't even I haven't
even looked at the the first thing I saw
on the dep chart was when y'all saw it.
You know, I just out there doing what
I'm supposed to do, doing what I'm told
and and whatever they asked me to do or
ask me and Parker to do, I'm sure that
he'll he'll think the same way. Just go
out there and and do what we're told to
do.
>> How do you guys compliment each other,
do you think? Uh,
>> I feel like we compliment each other a
lot, you know, just because we we're
entertainable parts and we bring
different things to the game and, you
know, we're one two punch. So, just
being able to um whenever we're out on
the field, just be able to bring
different things but also the same
things because we played the same
position in college. So, I feel like
that'll help both of us. around the film
to watch Pittsburgh.
>> What are they what are they shown you
and how are they dangerous?
>> I mean a guy Aaron Rogers.
>> I mean that's that's that there. I mean
he's played a long time and he's uh
probably one of the smartest guys um in
the history of the football game, you
know. So, it's crazy that it's my first
football uh NFL game, but it's been
great to be able to watch him and have
an extra week to be able to get to uh
watch him and see how he operates and
all the checks that he has and all the
little things. You know, it's a
different I've never had to go up
against a quarterback like this just
because he's so different. I mean, he
controls the whole the tempo of the
game. He never lets the game rush him.
You know, you just got to go out there
and play defense and just really be on
top of your game. How impressive it is
that he's been able to sustain such a
long
>> crazy. It's crazy. I couldn't imagine
playing.
>> How What year is it for him?
>> 20 years.
>> I couldn't imagine. Yeah. My body will
give out ways.
>> Maybe 20 years.
>> Yeah. It's just crazy to me. Like it's
crazy.
>> And how old are you?
>> 23.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Facts. Um, we
were talking to Kevin earlier this week
and he was just kind of joking about how
he could watch, you could watch so much
film on Pittsburgh because of the fact
they have a new staff coming in and go
back and watch some things that Dallas
was doing. Green Bay back in the day
with Aaron Rogers and Michael. Um, what
were kind of some of the keys that you
were honing in on during your film study
over the last couple of weeks? probably
the same thing as coach just it's a lot
you know because you have to go back and
watch so many games and it's really hard
to because if you pick one game that
they did or pick one season and then
they don't come out and do that then
it's like you wasted time so you have to
it's a broad uh bird's eye view of it
all but you have to also have to see the
same stuff that they did over and over
so it's kind of hard to say what I'm
looking at you just kind of try to find
things that they've done over and over
and carried over and try to do those
things and coaches do a great job of
giving us uh things to look at. So, just
taking what they have for us and and not
looking at stuff that probably they
probably won't run.
>> To that point, Brick, I've talked to
Brick about this before where he's
sometimes like
>> they can go out and they can do what
they want to. We have to be about us a
little bit. Does that kind of when you
go into week one and you have a new
staff, is that kind of how you're
approaching it? Yeah, you have to go out
there and if we go out there and try to
game plan and scheme up stuff that they
do and we forget about our rules ball
and just everything that we've been
doing, honing in on our defense and, you
know, flying around and running around,
if we lose sight of what we're good at,
then it'll be hard to to play any team.
So, you have to be able to uh be where
your feet are. Um, control what you can
control. And also, you still have to go
out there and and scheme against a team,
but you also have to look in the mirror.
>> I believe this morning, I'd asked Kevin
about about you and Harold, Zack, EV,
this collection of you guys being able
to play early. Yeah.
>> Why do you think you are? Like, why as a
group do you think you guys are really
ready for this? Um,
as a group I feel like we came in with
the mentality that and when we first got
here, Matt Ryan told us like don't come
in thinking that you have like a year to
to learn the defense. Like you're going
to play and you're going to help us win.
So he told all of the rookies that and
kind of just take that, you don't take
that lightly. You know, you have to you
have to be ready for the opportunity and
just, you know, being mature about it
and not being what they call a rookie.
you know, you're a rookie, but at the
end of the day, you have to play like
you're not. So,
>> I've long heard the idea that the last
year of college and then the whole draft
process and then rookie camp and trying
to acclimate everything is like the
longest, hardest year of a guy's life.
Is there a way you can put into words
how challenging the last 12 months have
been for you?
>> Last 12 months,
>> going back to like beginning camp,
college camp, week one college.
>> Yeah, it's been a long Yes, it's been a
long time. I try not to think of how
long it's been. I try to put in
categories and try to put the last
season then training and then OTAAS and
try not to put in one big call. I've
been gone for 12 months but I've been
gone for a month. That's how I think
about it with training camp. So, and now
it restarts cuz we had the weekend off.
So, now it's the week one and try not to
think of the combine and how long we've
been going. I mean, it's football. I
mean, if you're tired of playing
football, then it probably ain't for
you. So just being able to fall in love
with the game and just, you know, taking
the opportunity that the coach has given
you.
>> I know I asked you about Kendall, but
Perk and kind of the role that he could
carve out for himself as well.
>> Uh just a young group of fast
linebackers. I think uh if we play fast,
just get to the ball, that's going to be
hard for a lot of offenses. So I'm
excited to see them boys fly around.
>> I know that today was probably a big day
in terms of like getting the cards out
at practice and everything like that.
What have you kind of learned about this
Pittsburgh offense? Obviously Aaron
Rogers being who Aaron Rogers is, but
what are kind of some of the the notes
that you've taken?
>> Uh A-Rod's a great quarterback. Uh I
think they want to get to their weapons.
Uh sometimes quick games, sometimes deep
down the field attacking our corners on
one-on- ones. So uh we just got to be on
it and uh guess we'll see.
>> Yeah. Um and then one more question for
me. Uh Kevin was talking Kevin Spansky
was talking a little bit about how much
film you could pull from like all of
these new coaches and what the Steelers
did last year, what Mike McCarthy's done
before. Like
>> how did you go into this week in terms
of the prep and the film study for for
what you're going to potentially see on
Sunday?
>> Um like you said, uh a lot of film to
watch. Uh I went to back when they were
together in Green Bay, watched a little
film there. um he's been at OC I think
at Dallas. So just just watching
different teams uh light teams
defensively wise. So I like to watch
Houston against those teams just to see
what you know we would look like against
them most likely and certain defenses at
least. So uh just watching that film I
think we'll be in a good spot.
>> What talked about Rogers said they got a
pretty potent running game of what you
seen from them and how you want to
prepare.
>> Oh yeah for sure. I feel like they want
to run the ball set the tone. Uh
hopefully uh we just got to fight back,
you know, uh not letting them set that
tone, make them one-dimensional
hopefully and just go from there.
>> Thoughts about your role um and your
guys around you, what you want to do.
There's some questions about people
trying to break in for pass rushing and
how important that's going to be against
Rogers to set the stage for the guys
behind you in the secondary. Talk about
more pressure for the guys in the
middle.
>> Uh I don't think so. I think we're all
family out here, so uh we we work
together as a team. Uh we support each
other. Uh, I know the back end got me, I
got the back end. Same with the front.
Um, I back them guys up. I let them eat,
do what they do, and I told them, "I
back you up and go from there."
>> Avon, how are you just mentally,
physically feeling going into your first
week one of the NFL?
>> Um, mentally and physically feel good.
I'm ready. I'm locked in.
>> Does it feel any different like
preparing for week one compared to all
of training camp? And just how's the
energy feel?
>> No, it's it's it don't feel different.
You know, same mindset.
>> It don't feel different.
Sorry.
>> It looks like you're going to like it.
>> Can you ask the question again?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. How does it
feel? That's very nice here. How does it
feel different just going into week one
compared to training camp and everything
out? How's the energy feel and
everything?
>> Yeah. It feel the same. You know, same
mindset, same field, study. Um just time
to go play now. All the work I put in,
just time for it.
>> What's the conversation like with your
brother? Like, will you guys get ready
together? Will you drive in separately?
Like what does that Sunday look like?
>> Man, we ready.
Are you excited to be getting to have
like a this first week one experience
with him again on the same team?
>> Yeah, man. It's it's a blessing. It's a
blessing, you know, one of one, but you
know, we we talking. We we not with each
other outside of here. You know, I go my
way, he go his way, but you know, we got
the same mindset. We both watch the fan.
We both locked in.
>> How confident does this defense feel
just going into a week one, especially
when you're going up against a Hall of
Famer like Aaron Roger?
>> Yeah, we confident. We confident. We
ready. We've been preparing for a long
time. It's time to go show it. What was
the team's reaction when they found out
that uh Tua was going to be starting and
what's just the confidence in Tua under
center?
>> Um just everybody was just excited for
Tua
>> and it's time for two to go go show the
show the world why
>> we got him.
>> How's the What's more of the challenge
opening up week one on the road compared
to being able to have that at home? What
challenges does that present?
>> None for us. Just I I think crowd
probably the only difference same
mindset with us like we home away same
same energy. Go out there and ball.
>> Avon talk about Aaron Rogers and going
up against week one against Aaron
Rogers. One of the the best to do it. We
were talking to Kendall and he was
joking. He was like I don't remember a
time when Aaron Rogers wasn't in the
league. Um, when you think about Aaron
Rogers, like what what comes to mind and
how excited are you that like your first
opportunity to play in that game is
against some of the best?
>> Yeah, Kendall was right.
>> He been in the league for 21 years. I'm
21 years old. So, but um you said
>> Yeah, just like your your thoughts on
being able to to go up against him and
what it's been like to really study him
this week as your
>> Yeah, it's a blessing to go against
A-Rod, you know, just somebody I've been
watching since I've been growing up. So
now I get to go against him. So you know
I'm ready. I'm ready for the look at him
in his eye and ready to go ball. That's
really it.
>> You didn't get a lot of preseason reps.
So how excited are you just kind of let
loose in week one?
>> I'm excited. I'm excited. Um been
grinding for it, been training, been
doing a lot of practice. So it's time
for it.
You're about to get your first
professional stamp. And I know it's been
a thousand times, but truly, how crazy
like is it that you know your brother is
going to be right there on the same
field, first professional snap,
uh, at home just opening up all this
just how how crazy is that? Like do you
realize like you you've lived a lot of
people's dreams probably? Oh,
>> it's crazy. Like it's just crazy just
looking to my right or my left and
seeing him out there like
>> Yeah. you know, just this time last
year, we we call each other to talk
about football, how I did in college,
how he did out here in the league. Now
we teammates, so it's a blessing. Um
during the game,
I'm just I'm just keep my head straight
and we just going to ball together. Just
something we talked about since we was
growing up. If we ever play each other,
it's going to be a movie.
>> What's uh your pregame like routine?
What's kind of is there a certain meal
you always have to have or what does it
look like getting ready for game day? I
don't. It's just whatever they got in
the hotel, I eat it. But, you know, put
my put my headphones on, listen to my
music, and
right mindset to go.
>> What kind of music? Like, who do you
have to listen to? Who
>> Little DJ
Young Boy, King V.
>> Yeah.
>> Appreciate it. Thank you.
>> You play Nickel in Clemson?
>> I did.
>> How much versus outside?
>> I play I play like every third down in
Clemson.
>> Okay. So, you're you're pretty
comfortable there. Yeah, for sure.
>> Um, Billy, tell us a little bit about
finally getting the the go-ahad to to
come out here in practice. I know you
just got it here in the last couple of
new weeks, but what was that first day
like back?
>> Uh, it felt so good back playing
football. Um, a lot of people are asking
me today how I felt being back out there
for the first time. Um, and I feel good
healthwise. Um, I just I feel like I
haven't took a snap in 9 months. So, um,
you know, that stuff normally comes back
pretty quick, about a couple practices,
but I feel good.
>> What's kind of your acclamation period
kind of looking like? I know Coach
Deansky said did some individual drills
last week in terms of what what kind of
does your ramp up look like for you?
>> Yeah. Um, yeah, obviously it started
with um, you know, just being able to
get to the point to where I can do DB
work. So, a lot of just forward
sprinting, straight backward pedaling,
then some change of direction stuff,
some sled pushes, and then finally
getting into where I'm comfortable
enough to do DB drills of backpedaling
and breaking right back downhill. Um,
and you know, uh, it's just been a
progressive building block ever since.
So, just going from that to, um, hopping
in with the DBs and their indie to be
back with the group. Um, and then, you
know, to today um, taking just reps here
and there. And so, um, just a a slow
building block, um, but we'll get there
eventually.
>> Really the process of being patient and
having to wait your turn to come back to
practice to play football. What did you
learn about yourself throughout this
whole journey?
>> Uh, I learned that there's a lot more to
life than football. Um, I'm a guy who
ever since I was a young kid, I worked
the hardest on every team that I was on.
Um, and never took a day off. So, um I
kind of look at this injury as giving me
a step back from all my hard work, all
the things that I've done and u just
learning life is more uh than just
football. Um so just being able to go on
vacation places, see different things,
try different foods, all types of things
like that. Um but ultimately being back
now, I've realized that I've missed it
so much.
>> You've gotten to watch obviously from
the sideline. What makes you so eager
aside from just getting out there, but
what makes you so eager about joining
this particular defense?
um just how I how my presence is felt
out there. Um obviously, I mean, in my
opinion, I haven't done nothing, but um
when I'm out there, everybody feels me.
Um and so I can't wait to um mesh that
in with Jesse Bates X, um you know, Mike
Hughes, even Avon Terrell, AJ Terrell,
um and the linebackers, too.
>> Do you feel like you'll be ready to play
Sunday?
>> Uh I'm ready right now, but um still
getting there. U still got to build some
confidence with it out there. Um, but
we'll see where we go.
>> Okay.
>> What was the hardest, you know, part
about the last nine months?
>> Um,
I'd say the early stages, not even being
able to walk. Um, being a pro alete and
now I can't even get up in the middle of
the night to go to the restroom without
using a scooter or being in the shower
and I have to sit on the ground. Like,
um, those things and never being injured
before and seeing what that was like.
Uh, it brought me back to ground zero.
But, uh, I honestly didn't even know I'd
make it to this point to where I'm back
practicing and here I am.
>> Billy, how proud are you of Kendall
Daniels?
>> Uh, very proud. You know, I've heard a
lot of things about him at Oklahoma.
Obviously, we didn't play together, but
I wish I played with him watching him.
Um, but just another guy who comes in
and about his business. Um, take
advantage of this opportunity.
>> We talked a lot about Go ahead, Alison.
What do you feel like you need to see
for yourself in order to be ready to go
for game action? like what do you feel
like is still maybe missing?
>> M I just need the live reps. Um just
getting going live, you know, versus
Drake London, Zack Branch, um OZ, all
those guys. Um even coming up and
defeating blocks on Charlie and Kyle, uh
things like that. Just getting live reps
and then I feel I'll be back in the
group.
We saw you every single day on the
sideline during training camp and uh
Kevin Space has talked a lot about just
like the mental reps and making sure
guys who can't really be out there just
yet get those. What was kind of your
process in in getting those in in in
practice and making sure that you're
mentally stimulated through it?
>> Yeah. Um always just following my
position. So just always backing up
behind the nickel, knowing the play
call, seeing the play, seeing the
motions, whatever it is. Uh but also
conversations that I've had with Brick
um our DC of just you know taking this
time to learn the defense as a whole. Uh
take this time to learn safety if needed
um and things like that.
