Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
Bemidji State University has successfully concluded its historic "For the North" fundraising campaign, raising over $38 million in just three years, a figure that far exceeded the original $25 million goal. This massive initiative stands as the largest in the university's history and set new records for annual donations and total funds raised over the period. The overwhelming support from nearly 2,300 alumni, including a significant number of younger donors and those focused on estate planning, has paved the way for a transformative era for the institution and its student body.
The influx of capital is directly fueling critical improvements across the campus infrastructure, technology, and facilities. Specific projects include the installation of new instructional technology in classrooms, the creation of a brand-new high-tech gigazone lounge on the third floor of Bridgeman Hall, the laying of new turf for the football field, and ongoing renovations to the gymnasium. These enhancements are designed to provide lasting benefits for current and future students, ensuring that the university remains competitive and well-equipped for years to come.
A significant portion of the raised funds is dedicated to student success, with $20 million earmarked specifically for this purpose, while other allocations support enrollment recruitment and faculty upgrades. The campaign has also established over 138 new funds, the majority of which are endowed in perpetuity to ensure long-term sustainability. One notable example is the Sunderman College of Creativity, Enterprise, and Place, where $8.1 million will be permanently endowed to continue serving the college's needs indefinitely.
To honor this incredible achievement, the university plans to celebrate its donors at an annual honors gala on September 25th, with a special spotlight on the classes of the 1970s, who have historically been the leading decade of contributors. This celebration marks not only the financial success of the campaign but also the deep engagement and legacy-minded spirit of the Bemidji State alumni community. As the university moves forward with these new resources, it is poised to offer an enhanced educational experience that reflects the generous vision of its supporters.

Bemidji State University recently
finished its fundraising campaign for
the north and announced a total of more
than $38 million has been raised for the
school over the course of 3 years. Our
reporter Sydney Dick spoke to university
representatives about what that number
means to them and how far it can go for
future students.
>> This just surged through our wildest
expectations setting records for the
most dollars raised in a year, the most
dollars raised over a 3-year period and
setting up a transformational experience
for our students.
>> For the north was the largest
fundraising initiative in Bemidji State
history with a focus on fundraising
money for the school's infrastructure,
facilities, and IT departments.
>> We have new instructional technology
that's going into our classrooms right
now, a brand new high-tech gigazone
lounge at the third floor of Bridgeman
Hall, new turf on our football field
kicking off the work toward a renovated
gymnasium.
This is something that extends across
all of our campus and it's going to be
here for years to come for Beavers.
>> All of these were made possible because
of For the North funds. The campaign
surpassed the $25 million goal on May
1st of 2026 and continued through June
30th with nearly 2,300 alumni donating.
Out of the original $25 million goal, $2
million was set to go to enrollment and
recruitment, $3 million to facility
upgrades and faculty, and the remaining
$20 million aimed at student success.
>> It speaks to the work of our alumni
engagement. I think we've done a lot in
terms of engaging all of our donors, but
really specifically some of our younger
donors and folks that are really
thinking about estate planning and
thinking about how they want to leave a
legacy and a mark on BSU. We had over
138 funds established over the course of
the For the North campaign, which is
incredible. And majority of those funds
are going to be endowed into perpetuity.
Um one gift that comes to mind is the
Sunderman College of Creativity,
Enterprise, and Place. Um majority of
that $8.1 million is going to be endowed
into perpetuity to be continue to serve
the needs of the college.
>> Reporting from Bemidji, I'm Sydney Dick,
Lakeland News.
>> The university will be celebrating the
campaign donors during the annual honors
gala on Friday, September 25th, with a
special spotlight on the classes of the
1970s, which was the leading decade of
donors overall.
