BALTIMORE RAVENS NEWS: JAMON JOHNSON SIGNED! | HERE’S WHAT THIS COULD BE SAYING?!

The Ravens just added another player to this defense. And while this signing may not be the type that jumps off the screen, I think it's worth paying attention to, especially because of the timing of it. With it being so close to the season, it's a move that makes sense. Before we get into it, uh make sure you subscribe to the channel. We're trying to get to 89,000 subscribers. And also, leave a like on the video. So, it came out yesterday that the Baltimore Ravens are signing linebacker Josh Johnson, per sources. But who is Josh Johnson? Where did he come from? And let's read that from Jeff Zrebiec. It says, "Uh Johnson is an inside linebacker who played his high school ball at Baltimore Power St. Frances Academy. He played his college ball at Georgia and Kentucky and played two games with the Packers last year, starting one." Uh so, uh we've been saying on here for the longest, whenever we ask, "What's the position that the Baltimore Ravens should still continue to sign somebody?" And we've been saying linebacker for the past couple of weeks. The reason being because they have a Roquan Smith, they have a Trenton Simpson, they have a Jay Higgins, uh but they also have a Teddy Bridgewater. But he he's not practicing yet because he's still on the physically unable to perform list. And I just felt like the Baltimore Ravens, their depth at linebacker was just it wasn't pretty right now. Uh they did not have many bodies at the position, and they just needed more depth. Uh but Jeff Zrebiec, he got into a bit more details on the why behind this signing. He said, "The Ravens are a bit thin uh at the moment at inside linebacker. Teddy Bridgewater is still on the PUP list as he works closer to return from major knee injury. Carl Jones Jr. has missed the past few practices. I can't imagine that Roquan Smith will play much, if at all, in the preseason." And in my opinion, that's what this move is all about. The preseason. Uh our first preseason game is a week away. And I know Jeff Zrebiec can't imagine Roquan Smith plays much, if at all, in the preseason. We still don't know exactly how Jesse Minter is going to do this when it comes to playing the starters. If he's going to play the starters in the preseason, if he's not going to play the starters in the preseason, I think in in my opinion we don't know, but I think he will just a little bit. Just a little bit on offense and defense. In that first game, maybe not, but maybe in that second and third game, we'll see. Uh but even if he does play even if he doesn't play the starters, either way, you still got guys behind the starters that are going to play. Uh so, specifically with this linebacker position, if you ain't got that many bodies there, then what's going to happen? You you need somebody to play those snaps. Uh you need somebody to have those reps in practice. So, this move, in my opinion, is just strictly for preseason and it's just to cover their bases as Teddy Bridgewater as he gets closer to returning. They said that he should be good soon. How soon is that? We don't know. Uh but I think as he gets ready to recover, as he gets closer to coming back, they're like, "Look, we don't not necessarily that they're not waiting on him cuz they are waiting on him, but they got to have bodies in place uh as he waits to make his long-awaited and anticipated return." Uh so, Jerman Johnson, this is a good opportunity for him, too. Even if worst-case scenario, if he doesn't make the Baltimore Ravens team, I I I don't think it's expected that he is going to make the team cuz again, I think he's just here for preseason, but for him, this could be a good opportunity to put some film on for the other 31 NFL teams. And just like we talked about with the offensive lineman, uh Kendall Lamb that the Ravens signed a couple of days ago, this is the same thing for him. He was brought in for the preseason to get snaps and reps in the preseason, uh but if he does not make the Ravens roster, then this is his opportunity to make a good impression with them, uh to possibly be on the practice squad, or just in case something happens down the line, they could be like, "Oh, we remember when we had this guy in the offseason. We remember when he had when we had him in training camp, uh when we had him in the preseason. He gave a lot of heart, he gave a lot of effort. You know what? Let's bring him back. All right, let's see what he got to say. He said, "Number one, I'm so excited with the huge extension for our wide receiver one, Zay Flowers received. He is so deserving of it based off of his performance the past two seasons. Three. Past three seasons. Wait. He said, "Uh but I saw a video that said this works for both sides. It works for Zay because he gets that bag and he can continue to be a Baltimore Raven. And it works for the Baltimore Ravens because Zay still has the next two years left on his rookie contract and that the extension does not start until 2028. Is this true? If so, EDC is a smart GM." Yeah. Because we in 2026, so he had the he has 2026 left on his deal as the fourth year, uh and then he has 2027 uh because they picked up the fifth year option. Uh so, the extension would start in 2028. So, boom. There you go. It just makes sense. He said, "Uh secondly, uh with that being said, do you believe that's the plan uh with the one Lamar Action Jackson with him being signed through 2027? Uh do you feel the Ravens knew that with how the negotiations went with his last extension that they needed to buy themselves some time to keep him on the roster and work out a deal with LJ?" No, I not really. I I think the Zay Flowers they they want to work out a deal with Lamar Jackson. Um but I think the Zay Flowers was just to get Zay Flowers deal done. Um I don't really think the timing of it is just I don't think they're trying to align it with Lamar Jackson. I I think they just they just want to get both deals done, I think. Um with Lamar Jackson's deal, we'll see. We'll see. Uh cuz the clock is ticking and it's going really really fast. Uh he said, "I know Lamar says that once the season starts, negotiations uh go out the window until the off season, which I love by the way. I feel a deal will get done and Lamar will retire a Raven." That's what we hope. That's what we hope. You know, business could be a little nasty. It could get a little ugly, especially ooh how it went last time, but we'll see. He said, "At any rate, let me know your thoughts and I pray you and all the team keep it clean, peace, and blessings, and I'm out." And he said, "First, real quick, to clarify off my first question, it works for the Ravens regarding cap because Zay would be on his rookie contract and the cap wouldn't hit until 2028 or 2029. I believe this would open up so much for the Ravens to make other moves in other positions that are of need." Uh okay. I I okay, I get what you're saying now because of the cap impact, like with Zay Flowers' deal. I I still think that even with the cap um I I see what you're saying and that does make sense, but yeah, with Lamar's his contract goes through next year. And that's it. Um so ooh But yeah, I see I yeah, I see what you're saying. But they they if if they did sign Lamar Jackson to a contract extension, both his and Zay's would start at the same time. So, Zay's cap hit, it's going to go way up. Uh well, not way up, but it does go up. But then uh Lamar Jackson, his contract would take effect because Lamar has this year and next year on his deal. Zay Flowers has this year and next year on his deal. Um so, yeah, it they they they going to if they going to keep both of them, that's a scary if, but a hopeful if. But, if they going to keep both of them, then both of them going to be getting paid significant money in 2028. With Lamar Jackson, it could be even before then, too. He said, "First, to the goat and everybody listening, peace and blessings." So, whoever that goat is out there, hey, shout out to you. He said, "Long question, so knowing how Harbaugh would put people in the doghouse and not use them except 77 and how we would mysteriously not utilize our players right, could that be the reason Bateman hasn't produced like he should? Mhm. That's a really, really good question um about Bateman. Uh That's a really, really good question. B- Was Bateman ever in the doghouse though? Um Ah I think with Bateman it's just been it's been timing has been off. Um the opportunities have been limited last year for sure. Um in the offense they were just he didn't get many targets at all. I think I think when when we had uh Sutton and simply on we had Purple Rain podcast on, they said that he only had either one or two less targets than DeAndre Hopkins or one or two more targets than DeAndre Hopkins. But it wasn't any targets at all cuz we know DeAndre Hopkins ain't getting many targets. Um I think with Bateman he had both limited targets but also uh when he did get his opportunity he didn't he just didn't get that consistent opportunity. Um so I think that's a big part of it, too. Uh especially last year. Now the year before when he did get a lot of opportunity he he shined. Um but then he had end up getting hurt so he missed some time. Um and there were some plays where and again with more opportunity it's going to happen with plays where you you have hiccups, you got mistakes, you got errors that you make. That's going to happen with more opportunity but you still want those opportunities so you could actually show the good side, too. It's not just going to be all bad with the more opportunities that you get. Um so I think it was just it's just been a mix of things. But as far as the doghouse I don't has Bateman even really even been in the doghouse? I guess maybe last year target wise could have been it. Um cuz yeah, he just we ain't really using but what is Tays Walker? Look at Tays Walker. All he All he All Tays Walker do every time he on the field when the ball comes his way, all he do is produce. But, he wouldn't be on the field. So, I mean that that could have been a part of it with Rashod Bateman, but Rashod Bateman obviously got more opportunities than a Tays Walker. Um I think there were higher hopes for Rashod Bateman than a Tays Walker though cuz Rashod Bateman was a first-round pick. So, they had they had higher expectations with being a first-round pick. Instead of being a I think Tays was a fourth-round pick, third or fourth-round pick. I think fourth. I forget though. Um so yeah, I think with Bateman it's just it's been a mix of things. That's that's a really really good question. He said, "We know Lamar has uh some some say uh so that's how Zay never got in there, but think about that. We would take Derrick Henry out when we shouldn't. Uh we played that QB over Snoop." Ooh, that boy ain't even mention Cooper Rush's name. That boy said, "We played that QB over Snoop." Um he said, "And let's not think of how we used to yell at the TV for Keeton Mitchell to get a chance." Oh, yeah. Yep. We Yeah, we would be screaming. Like you watching at the on the TV on your iPad, on your phone. Yeah, we would be upset. Shout out to Harbs. Uh he said, "I think Harbs has been sabotaging players for the opportunity to show." Well, I don't know what he could show but let that sink in. Bateman was coming up on a contract and Harbs forgot about him to keep his price low is the best I could come up with. Listen how everybody who plays from Lamar to Zay to Doyle, they all give Nate respect that sounds genuine. Is Oh, I think he I think he meant Bateman. Um but yeah, it's it's crazy, man. It's it's crazy just thinking about the the team as a whole, the roster as a whole, and how many players like opportunity missed as a whole because of misuse or just not being used at all. And obviously, you got a a of 53 players then 16 on the practice squad. Everybody ain't going to get the full opportunity, a full experience. But, um you have players that this team was just mismanagement, man. They were mismanaged. Uh a lot of times I see people um who like from the outside in, people who are not Ravens fans are not really familiar with the Ravens like that like that, they say even still to this day like I saw it on Tik Tok just yesterday. Uh somebody was live streaming and >> [clears throat] >> might come on and you you Why why would y'all get rid of one of the best coaches in the league? Why would you you That's that still wasn't a good move by the Ravens. Why why And how can y'all have confidence that Jesse Minter, a first-time guy, is going to come in and be able to really turn this team around and get it done? Like y'all got rid of John Harbaugh. That was not a good And I'm just like, man, they just People don't know. Like from the outside looking in, everything looks looks cool. It's like, man, this team they were in the playoffs year in year out. They always had a chance and da da da da da. And that part is true, but then when you look on things more just in more detail. And you look at things in more depth, um then it's like, oof, like why why were they doing that? So so a lot of stuff started before the games were even played. And that was the scary part. And that was a consistent thing through a lot of years. And it just did not feel like John Harbaugh as a head coach, he always put this team in the best position to have success. They did have a lot of success. Obviously, more recently in the regular season, they did have a lot of success, which was great. It was fun. But, there was just there was moves here and there where it's like, why weren't we doing this? Why is this person has shown you when they out there, oh they making stuff happen, but they're not out there. You don't have them on the field. What are they doing on the sideline? And there'd be other people who would be out there on the field, but they were struggling a lot, and the Ravens would have other options, and even better options on the bench, but those options would stay on the bench. And it was like, "Oh, what So, it was just confusing times, man. Um, but anyway, continuing, he said next, "Are you excited about this defense?" Oh, for sure. For sure. Oh, I like how he turned that that negative to a positive. He said, "Oh, he said, you know what? Let Let me get to some positive. How about this defense?" Like he said, "I know [snorts] you still want Clowney, but hear me out." Well, that's Well, one Teddy Clowney, that's that's that's gone now. I said, "But hear me out. This defense played under Harbs and a defensive coordinator we shall no longer name, who was completely lost." No, you You're right. You're right. So, that's that should create immediate turnaround like that. I said, "Competence Competency can definitely take us farther this year. Everybody is saying it's a breath of fresh air. X factors for this season are Malachi Starks, uh Tae Davis Robinson, um Trent Simpson, and Teddy Bridgewater, and Mike Green. Imagine if they all make a leap this year." That'd be nice. And you know what's crazy is that it's possible. It really is. Um, Malachi Starks, uh he talked about how he was going to be playing with just more freedom, not second-guessing stuff. Uh Mike Green, he'll have Trey Hendrickson next to him, and just a coach that gets the best out of a D-line. Uh Teddy Bridgewater, especially when he gets back, um and just the linebackers overall, inside linebackers, they should be in a much better position to make plays than they were last year. Even though Teddy Bridgewater was making some plays last year. So, he should be in even better position to do that uh once he returns. Um, Tae Davis Robinson, he has continued to steady just working his way up and doing more, and just getting better. So, now in an even better scheme, he should look uh even better. Uh and, let me see, did I miss somebody? I think I did. Oh, yeah. He said Malachi Starks, Tae Davis Robinson, Trent Simpson, and Teddy Bridgewater, and Mike Green. Okay, so yeah, we covered everybody. But yeah, it it just everything you said makes sense. He said, "Just your opinions will suffice. He said, "Hey, Engraven, love all that you do and keep it up. Been subscribed for a while, but first time sending in a question. Hey, appreciate you, my friend. He said, "Um all this talk about highlights in training camp really got me thinking about who is going to be that one guy everyone knows is dragging the team down." Uh-oh. He said, "Previously, it's been Flacco and Brandon Williams." And when I think about this, only person This is the only person that comes to mind, uh Marlon [snorts] Humphrey. Oof. He said, "All I've heard and seen these last two or so years, uh is him getting worse and getting beat more and more and it's got me nervous thinking he could become a liability on the defense." Well, last year, yes. The year before, no. But last year, last year for sure, it was it was bad. Uh he said, "I know I can't judge it with this new defense and defensive scheme and staff, but it still gets me nervous nonetheless. What are your thoughts?" Um honestly, right now, I ain't worried about Marlon Humphrey. I know, like you said, in in in training camp, we've been seeing him get beat. Uh we've been seeing him in a lot of highlights involved in a lot of highlights, getting caught on and stuff. But, it happens. It's training camp, man. Uh that's what that's for. Um they're Well, I can't say they're not going crazy with the scheme, cuz they're implementing the scheme and stuff in training camp. That's what practice is for. Um but, I'm I'm not worried about it right now. I I I wouldn't worry right now. Uh Marlon Humphrey should be in a much better position uh this season under this scheme. Uh as far as the pass rush, the pass rush should be a lot better. Um just the way that the corners play against the receivers, they should be in much better posi- Everything should be a lot better. Are they going to have the hiccups here and there? Yeah, of course. Every team does, every scheme does here and there. But, overall, I think this should be much improved from the past two seasons. Much like way improved. And I know like that's Honestly, improvement over the last two seasons not really asking much because they could be like the 24th overall ranked defense, and that would be an improvement over the past two seasons. But, um I I think we'll get significant improvement because scheme makes the world of a difference. Because we saw it with Mike Macdonald, um just in 2023 how amazing this defense was. They just making plays here, there, everywhere. And then in 2024, we saw everything just drop and change for the worse. We saw in 2025, everything just drop and change for the even worse. So, now I would expect us to take a huge jump forward. Top five defense? Maybe, but uh top top 10 I think for sure. But, I I actually think top five is realistic, especially with all the playmakers that Ravens have on defense, how they have good players at every level of the defense. Honestly, especially with the scheme, too, there may not be an excuse for Ravens not to be top five. So, saying that they could have a top five defense, I honestly don't don't even think that's far-fetched.
