[music] Hello and welcome back to a brand new episode of Innovation. I'm your host Lynn Plmeer and thank you for joining. First, our headlines. Israeli tech entrepreneur Mati Gil joins Naftali Bennett's political party to lead a reformed plan for high-tech technology, science, [music] and the health care system. We speak to him about his vision forward. What if emergency responders could see a crisis unfolding before they even arrive? In Cesaria, a fleet of drones is giving cities eyes in the sky. [music] I went to see it for myself. A spy satellite turned space telescope is blasting off to hunt the universe biggest mysteries. NASA's Roman telescope will map billions of galaxies and search for alien worlds, trying to answer the [music] biggest question there is. Is there life beyond Earth? Now, Israel is heading toward elections at a critical moment for its tech industry. There's a growing brain drain which threatens to take some of the country's brightest minds abroad and AI is putting thousands of jobs in the crosshairs. Now tech entrepreneur Mati Gil is stepping into politics joining Napali Bennett's party with a plan to reshape Israel's future in technology, science, and healthcare. Mati, thank you so much for being with me today. >> Thank you, Lyn. >> H you're also here with me on the first episode ever of Innovation. So, welcome back and congratulations on your very exciting step forward. Um, I'd also like to introduce Jonathan Zin there. Welcome. You are the CEO, co-CEO and partner of Blue Eye AI. Uh, we will start we will come back to you shortly. Uh, so Mati, let's start with you. Um, it's a very exciting step into Israeli politics. Uh, you al you started in Israeli politics, but now you're returning to join Naftali Bennett's party. So, what made you decide to join him? >> Well, Lynn, I've always lived my life saying Israel family and work with meaning. And you're right. 20 years ago, I was part of forming a a party and worked in politics for about four years and then went over to the private sector and industry and high-tech. And really after October 7th and with this current government, there is a need to reverse some of the very dangerous trends, brain drain, the the lack of investments, the downturn in the amounts of employees that we see in the R&D sectors of the tech industry that are the future growth engines of this country. And what's needed for that is that some of the best people that work in our startup nation that have built things that we are all proud of will go into politics and work for the future of our country. So when the opportunity arose and I was asked I I said absolutely I'm in and very proud actually to be working to help Napali Bennett be the next prime minister because he himself is a tech entrepreneur a successful one that was also a great prime minister and hopefully will be our next prime minister and will be able to help rebuild this country fix this country and build up the next 80 years. >> So what do you think right now are the biggest challenges for Israel? So for Israel in general, we have geopolitical challenges, we have human capital challenges, we have internal challenges as well. If we go to our sector of uh the high-tech and technology, we need three things uh in order for us to continue to be a leading innovation ecosystem for the world. Number one is we need great human capital. Number two is we need this to be uh cutting edge technology that we are ahead of the game there. And number three is we need enough investment to come in to help fuel this whole environment. And it can't just be government investment. We have to bring in private investors. And so the private investors and private investments in Israel have gone down. And the technology we are not not at this point ahead of the game in some of the areas of infrastructure for artificial intelligence. So we need to fix that. We need to be top three in the defense technology in deep technologies and AI infrastructure. We need to actually bring back investments. But the biggest driving force is our people. And our people for centuries have always been the best and the brightest and leading the way unproportionately. We have Nobel Prize winners, even one that we lost just yesterday, Professor Adonat. And [snorts] our people we cultivate by making sure our education system is great, our science and academia is excellent, and that we're able to actually give them a country that they can be proud of and live in. And what we've seen over the last three to four years is more and more of the best Israelis we have that the brilliant minds are leaving this country are going abroad. We need to go bring them back and we need to go proactively bring in another million oim over the next another million people to want to immigrate to Israel over the next 10 years so we can really refuel this country and make this into a country that will be something we can all be proud of. And that's something I want to work on after the elections. What do you think like the edge is that you bring specifically because of course there's a there's a huge well I don't like all the people in politics they are very politic- minded right they know how to play the game but tech is a whole different field so where do you think you position yourself when it comes to the difference between somebody from your background and somebody who's been in politics for a long time >> that's an excellent question and then maybe I'll just say I do have deep understanding of the political and experience in the political arena I also come with an entrepreneurial mindset and a can do mindset that actually can be a bulldozer and help make things happen even when they seem uh impossible to do just with venture studio that I had the opportunity to actually build and help lead that doesn't exist anywhere in the world. A model like that and we've been able to create it and make it into a successful reality. But third, I think and this is probably the secret sauce, I have the passion. I have the drive. I want to make sure this works. I love our country and I want to make sure my kids and their kids have a better future here. And that's what it's all about. Just today we dropped them off at schools. We want to make sure that they go to school every day learning the best growing and to be the best and then they will be the future leaders of this country. But we need to make our we need to fix so much about our country fundamentally and we need the best people to be able to do that. and Nfali Bennett I believe with his background as a tech entrepreneur and someone that has deep in politics and he has his own drive he's the best person coming prepared with a great team of people around him that I am very fortunate to be part of to be able to build up the next 80 80 years of this country >> so you you've been back for now two years in a row [laughter] for innovation hopefully next season you will also open the show um in four in four or five years time what will change and then you can say to me okay I'm really proud that we have accomplished this. >> That's great. So it's a great question. So I'll go back to the same thing. We need to fundamentally go out and proactively bring back the best Israelis that have left us. We need to inspire them to want to come back here. We need to start bringing back immigrants. We need to see that whole trend reverse. Number one. Number two is we need to make sure that we are at the forefront of the future deep technologies so that we no longer miss out like this current government missed out on AI. We need to make sure that we need to not miss out both on AI infrastructure to the capacity that we're able to actually catch up but also on quantum technologies and other deep technologies of the future. We need to make sure we're at the forefront of that. And then number three, we need to bring back investors. And we need to see that trend going way back up. And we need to make sure fundamentally that we are training the next generation of scientists from primary school through high school in the same manner that Bennett when he was minister of education got our students all throughout the country to reapply themselves to learning the the top levels of mathematics and then English and other STEM programs. We need to reinvigorate this country so that we are not just the former startup nation but the future of technology throughout the world and really make this a beacon of light to nations throughout the world. >> So this is uh not the end of the line but a future vision that you are presenting. So let's circle back to the beginning because Yonathan you are an AI expert and you're here amongst others to tell us about the dangers maybe the challenges that AI brings us in the upcoming elections. So with the upcoming elections what dangers or challenges might we be facing with AI? >> Okay, thank you. Uh first of all um I believe that this elections will be different than any other elections that we had before. First of all, because of the deep implementation and usage of AI in the day-to-day of the people and the voters, the two main things that I think that are influencing this elections are first of all the deep fake content content which make the voters um really hard to uh understand what is real and what is not real. when we are coming to to vote we need to understand what are we vot voting for and based on what we are taking these decisions and this deep fake content is something that make everything more complex for us and secondly um there's a capability to message testing on us as voters at huge scale and this is something that most of the public doesn't know um when we are getting a phone call from an AI agent that asking us to whom are we going to vote or when we are getting um approached by a video in Instagram um that shows us something from one of the parties, we are being tested tested on what is influencing us and what makes us look at the phone and um consume this content the most. And the AI uh technology is allows the parties the the campaigners to try out these um um ideas on us at massive scale which haven't been done before. Never. >> Yeah. Because also there a recent survey has found that 71% of Israelis has encountered fake news while looking up the elections. So it's going to be a huge problem. Do you think it's going to ultimately change the outcome of the elections? >> Okay, so I I was approached by different by different politicians and different parties to try and utilize our AI capabilities for these elections. So I can tell you for sure that all of the parties and all of the politicians are using AI to make an impact on what we are going to vote. Um they are using different methods, different technologies. Some of them are about what do we see in these AI platforms. Some of them are on what will impact our state of mind the most. And I believe that we will see it getting um harder and stronger uh in the last two weeks before the election because we know that traditionally people in Israel are deciding to whom they are going to vote in the last two weeks. Um so yes, I believe the AI technology probably will impact the um results of these elections. >> Well, you are as an AI expert, but you're also the co and the partner of Blue Eye AI. Um so what we do with startups, we ask them to pitch them uh pitch us their startup ideas. So 60 seconds on the clock. What is Blue Eye AI? Okay. So, Blue III is the go-to impletor for low tech and traditional industries uh in Israel. We are coming into a company. We analyze their um bottlenecks, their operational bottlenecks at sales, at customer support, at recruitment and we are building a custom AI agent for their own needs. Our a agents can be measured and always bringing an amazing uh addition to their ROI. Um and we are there with our clients. We are giving them the best service. We are there in their offices and we make sure that the implementation is being as effective as possible. >> So these AI agents, they basically serve as digital employees. uh what happens when these digital employees take over human tasks? >> Okay, so basically what we are aiming for is to um teach these AI agents to do the repetitive work. So as far as I understand it, people still need to use their creativity. There are special way of looking at things, understanding complex tests, but they don't need to do the repetitive test anymore. They don't need to communicate in WhatsApp. They don't need to do copy paste from one system to another. and many other things that are becoming an operational bottlenecks for our clients. This is where our agents are coming and taking care and and doing all of this repetitive work that will be offloaded from the uh human employees in these companies. >> So you don't think it will it will cause human jobs? >> I believe it will impact human jobs because we will need less employees to do this vast amount of repetitive work. But I believe that the most expert people, the one that are creative, the the one that understand complexity in a deep way of looking at it, um will stay and will be even much more impactful if they will be able to utilize AI agents in their day-to-day work. >> Well, it's an amazing idea and also DB Group Investment just acquired a 49% stake in your company. Good luck with the elections. And we hope to see you again next year. >> Thank you so much. >> Now, we're moving up. The next time danger strikes, help may not come from the ground, but from the sky. Cities across Israel are deploying fleets of drones designed to spot threats and guide first responders in seconds. I went to see this revolutionary new system with my own eyes. This is the Cesaria business zone and this is me walking around. Yes, you're seeing this right. This drone is monitoring my every move. It's part of the ROM 360 initiative in which municipalities and strategic sites aren't just waiting for emergency services anymore. But they have their own drone fleet to serve as their eyes in the sky. >> What you're witnessing here is basically the 15 second gamechanging revolution. So if God forbid there's an adverse event, may it be a terrorist attack or an earthquake or a missile coming from nowhere then what we want is that to create one unified language for all the first responders and the emergency units may be police, firefighters and even the local authorities here. Everybody wants to see everything in one shot and in 15 seconds. So if it happens, the drone is immediately goes up and everything that is shown up in the sky immediately is transmitted to the command and control center and to the mobile phones of all the leading decision makers and that enables everybody to get a full picture of what's happening and that saves time and most importantly Lynn it can save lives. >> All emergency services work together so when the call comes they know what to do. You immediately press the button from a remote command and control center that ROM 360 manages. We immediately shoot the drone or you know launch the drone into the sky. The drone gets into the sky. They immediately see the picture of what the drone sees here and basically now they're in they're in control. They move the camera right, left, zoom in, zoom out. they're in touch and they can and the link is immediately what we call a live share link is immediately dispatched to whomever they decide. >> And it's not just reactionary. This system also serves as deterrence. For instance, in this case, following a wave of arson attacks in Cesaria, a reconnaissance drone spots someone trying to set a fire. Unaware he's being actively tracked, the arsonist attempts to leave the site. The drone operator guides police officers directly to the suspect's location leading to his arrest. Perpetrators don't stand a chance anymore. >> So everything is connected. So if we're talking about routine, it's a great example because they have these patrols. So imagine patrolling. You have a drone that patrols the sky and has day and night vision and special sensors. And by the way, we it could you could they can even uh call the guy who's trying to to who shouldn't be where he's, you know, he's creating this suspicious activity and they can shout him, "What are you doing there?" They can actually do it from the drone. They can call him out or they can even put lights that are looking like a bit of a police lights, if you know what I mean. And that's something that deters. There's a lot of deterrence. The name of the game is deterrence. And if they feel that there's some activity that shouldn't be taking place, they would immediately send that link to their own unit saying, "Hey, go to this in this street. Something here is weird." And then even the guy that's sitting next to the driver sees the exact live location of what's happening. And he sees the same picture. That's just crazy. >> With the ROM 360 system, the response time reduces, which causes crime rates to drop drastically. And this could be just the beginning of how drones are used in our everyday lives. >> I think the future of surveillance drones is exactly uh is exactly the direction that we're heading at. You will see the skies filled with a fleet of drones of various drones or various unmanned um flying robotics and it will be part of a whole ecosystem not just for ISR and intelligence surveillance and recognance but also for delivery uh logistics even air taxis. I think it will all be part of an ecosystem. >> And so for cities facing everything from crime to natural disasters, the message is clear. The future of emergency response is already taking flight. >> Amazing technology. Now from the skies to space, Israel is preparing for a new battlefield, namely space. Defense Minister Israel Katz says the country is planning offensive space capabilities, including weapons that could target threats on Earth. Our Joe Brown has the story. One small step for man, but one giant leap for the Israeli defense systems. The Defense Ministry has announced it is planning a year-long developmental process to enhance the Israeli capabilities in space for use during war. This can be done through the maximization of intelligence. So this is seeing what is happening on the ground. But it can also help determine the optimal weather conditions for attacks and also it is being used as a means of striking. striking down uh defensively to stop people destroying the Israeli satellites, but also offensively trying to uh strike some of the targets on the ground without the uh use of Israeli manpower such as pilots in the Israeli Air Force. Now, this is being accelerated because of its prior use in the war with Iran earlier this year. The Israeli satellites were used for intelligence and that allowed them to undergo precise strikes on Iranian targets. Something that the defense minister Israel Katz has been a very strong proponent of. He has been saying that he wants to try and maximize this so that Israel is leading in its field to be a trailblazer for these kinds of technologies and to put itself on the map even further even though it is off the map. So, Israel is trying to make sure that it is keeping up to date with the latest technology and to make sure that its defense capabilities really are out of this world. >> And we stay in space. NASA has launched its newest eye on the universe, a telescope designed to scan billions of galaxies, hunt for thousands of new worlds, and perhaps help answer one of the humanity's oldest questions. Are we alone? >> 3 2 1 ignition and liftoff. >> What if the next big discovery in space is something we don't even know to look for yet? NASA's Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope is now on its way into the unknown. Launched Sunday aboard a Space X Falcon Heavy, Roman will spend the next several years surveying the universe and looking for answers to some of science's biggest questions. Telescope has separated from Falcon Heavy. Its solar panels and lower instrument Sunshade have been deployed. Ground controllers at NASA Gddard have been receiving telemetry data from Roman. And apparently all systems are nominal. Roman is heading nearly 1 million miles from Earth to lag range point 2, where it will begin its massive survey of the cosmos. Its superpower, seeing more and seeing it faster. Roman's field of view is at least 100 times wider than the Hubble's, allowing it to scan enormous stretches of sky in a fraction of the time. So, the telescope will provide a vast new atlas of the universe, potentially revealing more than a 100,000 new exoplanets through its uh various surveys. So, Roman will help us, as you've already heard, study dark matter, dark energy, mysteries that may change our fundamental understanding of the universe. >> And the mission event even got a call from the White House. >> Boy, it looked beautiful on television. I just called Jared to find out is there anything negative that I should know about like it will never be able to return. Little things like that. He said no it's looking great. It couldn't be better and it was another great successful launch. Jar's doing a fantastic job. You are doing a fantastic job and I'm supplying you all that money. [laughter] >> And beyond the spectacle, Roman could bring scientists closer to answering one of humanity's biggest questions. Why do we care so much about exoplanets? Because one of our main goals at NASA is answering the question, are we alone in the universe? Whether you like space, whether you like technology, whatever it is, people look up at the sky and they think, I want, you know, am I am I alone? Are we alone? Is there another Earth 2.0 looking back at me? Roman's cornograph will block the light of distant stars, giving scientists a better look at the planets orbiting them, including their atmospheres. And with Roman, we are going to make this giant leap forward with the coronagraph technology that is going to allow us to look at these distant distant worlds and start to really resolve the um the atmosphere around them to let us know could they be habitable. But exoplanets are just one piece of the puzzle. Roman will also map billions of galaxies to help scientists understand dark matter and dark energy. Two forces that remain among the universe's greatest mysteries. But it's a transition because it's an end point for the engineers, but it's a starting point for the scientists. You know, so it feels like I'm on the edge of a precipice and we're just about to set a foot off into the unknown. The telescope will spend the next 90 days being prepared for science operations with its first images expected before the winter holidays. And when those first images arrive, Roman won't just show us more of the universe. It could show us a universe we never knew was there. Exciting times ahead. And we leave you with this because forget cologne, forget deodorant, forget showering. Apparently, the secret to getting a date nowadays is smelling absolutely terrible. Yep.
