Atlanta Falcons players on Week 2 preparation vs Carolina Panthers | Press Conference
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The Atlanta Falcons players are addressing the unique challenge of preparing for their Week 2 game against the Carolina Panthers without knowing who will start at quarterback until shortly before kickoff. The offensive unit emphasizes adaptability and trust, stating that regardless of whether it is Jake Browning or another player in the room, the skill position players must bring high energy, focus, and a winning mindset to practice. They view their primary role as making life easier for whoever takes the snap by executing their jobs perfectly, ensuring the quarterback can rely on them to do whatever is necessary to move the ball and score points. This approach allows the offense to remain flexible and ready to plug-and-play with any available option while maintaining a unified goal of team success.
A significant portion of the discussion revolves around the upcoming matchup against the Panthers, who are the reigning division champions and have defeated Atlanta in previous seasons. The Falcons players acknowledge that this game requires a playoff-level mentality and a sense of urgency, noting that they cannot afford to play tentatively or "tiptoe" against such a formidable opponent. They plan to treat every practice session with maximum intensity to ensure they are physically and mentally prepared for the physical battle ahead. Additionally, the team is looking to clean up specific issues from their previous loss, such as reducing penalties and staying efficient in the running game, while also learning from last year's tape to avoid repeating mistakes that cost them the victory.
On the defensive side, there is a strong sense of camaraderie and mutual support among the young players, particularly within the group known as the "Firebirds." The team highlights the impressive return of Zonovan Knight, who recorded two sacks in his first game back after missing most of the previous season due to injury, demonstrating his dedication and seriousness about his craft. Players also discuss their individual offseason routines, with some focusing on lower body strength and agility work to improve explosiveness and recovery. The group expresses excitement about building a core of young talent and fostering fellowship through shared experiences, believing that getting to know each other deeply will ultimately help them fight harder for one another during the season.
Finally, the players reflect on the quarterback situation with a mix of anticipation and professional readiness. They appreciate having both Jake Browning and Mike Glennon working out reps together, as it ensures the team is prepared for either scenario and allows both quarterbacks to stay sharp. While they acknowledge that developing chemistry with a specific starter early in the week would be ideal, they remain focused on their own development and learning from veterans like Cooper Kupp. The overall tone of the press conference is one of optimism and determination, with players expressing confidence in their ability to execute the game plan regardless of personnel changes and eager to prove themselves against a tough division rival.

What's the challenge of entering a a
league not knowing who you'll have at QB
when it could be legitimately anybody
you have in that room right now?
>> Yeah, man. I mean, like you just said, a
little bit of a challenge, but for us,
like we just learn how to adapt, uh,
like we've been saying, and you know,
right now it it's something that you
just go out to practice and you just got
to work with with who you have out
there, with what you have out there,
and, you know, work to the best of your
ability. But, you know, I know whether
it's Coupe, Mike, like we we're not
going to know till we go out there. Um,
but for us, like as skilled players, we
got to, you know, bring that energy to
practice and we got to bring it uh with
the right focus and the right mindset.
So, whoever is back there playing
quarterback, you know, they can trust
they have trust in us and to know that
we're going to do our jobs uh the right
way for them.
>> Throw your hat in the ring for that for
that gig.
>> Say it again. Say it again.
>> On your hat in the ring for that gig.
quarterback warming up that left. Maybe
you can get
>> I have not, man. I have not. Shoot,
Drake better quarterback than me, but um
No, I have not.
>> Head heading into the game, did you kind
of expect yourself to be getting, you
know, a very heavy workload, obviously
29 carries, and and how do you feel that
physically that went for you?
>> Uh it was great. Um you know, obviously
I didn't know. I just um just knew like
whatever I had to do uh to to help the
offense. um keep moving the ball, keep,
you know, trying to put the ball in the
end zone. Like that's what I had to do.
But yeah, I didn't know like that was uh
what I was going to get. You know, I
think like like running backs or guys
like um that are playmakers like really
don't know what the touch count is going
to look like, but all I know is that
every time I had to try to touch that
ball, like I had to, you know, do
something with it and, you know, try to
make a play happen every every
opportunity that I had.
>> Did you realize in the game like you
were getting that? Was it was afterwards
you looked at your stats like, "Oh my
gosh." Sure. Was it like during the game
like oh all right they're really coming
to me?
>> Yeah. It's more like for me how I think
of it is like you I get in the groove so
the more I do touch it like the more um
especially like for the first game of
the season you know as as the game was
flowing um the game was starting to slow
down especially like in that second half
like it just slowed down for me uh
because I I didn't play obviously
preseason so like that first half is
more me just trying to adjust and get
used to the speed but you know in the
second half um you know it started to
slow down for me a lot and then I just
started to to to get on to get on the
roll, but I didn't really know like how
how many touches that I had um at all
>> realistically like do you think that
that'll be a challenge to kind of keep
that up long term? I mean, obviously you
want to touch the ball all the time, but
I mean like how how challenging or is it
for you?
>> Uh not it's not really a challenge. Um
you know, I know what we're trying to
you know, we have so many great
playmakers on the offense. Um we have
obviously Dre, Kyle, like those are the
guys. Um, and then Oz, uh, Han, like we
have so many so many guys that that
could touch the ball. Um, but for me,
like if it's it's whatever does whatever
I can do to help the team, you know, win
the game. Um, that's that's what I'll
say. Say on that.
>> Were they joking with you like get me
the ball like share a little bit or were
they having fun with you afterwards?
>> No, no, they weren't. Um, but you know,
I know that those guys want to have the
ball in their hands like as much as
possible. And you know, I know we're
going to try to do whatever we can to
put the ball in their hands, uh, so we
can all, you know, benefit off of each
other. So, you know, whatever the
whatever our game plan is for that,
like, you know, th those when they have
the ball in their hands, like they're
threats to everybody on the defense. So,
you know, we're going to try to just
continue to have that shared between all
of us um, as much as we can.
How does not knowing who the starting
quarterback's going to be until like
Thursday, Friday, maybe even later than
that challenge you guys as an offense as
you're trying to prepare for this game?
>> Um, I mean, I think the challenge is
like more the the playbook. Um, it could
could not change, you know, we just
never know. Uh, you know, and then on
top of that, they're two different uh
like one's a lefty, one's a right or two
are lefties, one's a righty, uh, two are
righties. So, it's like that that I
guess could be the challenge for it. But
other than that, you know, the the plays
are going to be the plays and we we got
to be the ones to bring it to life and
execute at a high level. And really,
whoever whoever's back there, like they
they know what the play what the
playbook is, they know what the plan is,
and you know, it's it's their job to to
execute it as well, just as much as it's
ours um to do it for them.
>> What does change when you go from like
lefty to righty and vice versa? What has
it changed? just the the way of the
play, like the direction of the play.
Um, yeah, you know, sometimes it's
people think it's like the the spin on
the ball, but it's it's really not. You
know, you got to catch and tuck. You got
to have great fundamentals when you
catch football, but, you know, I think
that's that's the only thing that kind
of changes.
>> It's not like you guys have an option
right now. You do have to wait like
everybody else to see who's the
quarterback this Sunday. How can the
rest of you guys around whoever it's
going to be help that person out come
Sunday? Yeah, I mean the the thing that
I like about the guys on the offense,
like from the O line to tight ends to,
you know, backs, receivers, um, anybody
who is back there, like we we enthuse
that confidence in them in the huddle
and just make sure that they're just
calm, uh, collected, like that they got
their stuff together. Um, cuz I know it
is a challenge like maybe not knowing
who, uh, is going to be there. So it
could be a challenge on the
quarterback's mental um as well. But for
us like for whoever it whoever it is
just to know that we're doing our job
right and you know it puts more on us
which I love because that's our job.
Like we got to we got to do it for him.
So you know I just I just want to make
it as easy as I can for whoever is back
there and I know all the other guys want
to as well. What's the sense of urgency
kind of like as our home week two
opening up against the Panthers who are
the reigning division champs? I mean
it's it's a pretty big game. How are you
guys kind of getting ready?
>> Yeah, we're we're treating it as such.
Like you know this is not only this the
biggest game um because it's a division
game, but it's it's our next game. So we
have to treat it as as the biggest game.
And you know I think we're all you know
really amped up for it. But, you know,
for us, like it's just starting today,
starting on Wednesday in practice and
and make sure that we're uh grasping the
game plan and understanding it to a tea.
Um because we know like, you know, the
they're going to come in here high
energy uh big division game like it's a
must win for them, too. So, you know, we
we have to come in prepared uh the right
way and know that on on Sunday like we
can't go in there uh tiptoeing or or
pitter patter. to go in there physical,
you know, just ready to go.
>> So, how does your role like change with
Cooper at quarterback? I noticed he was
throwing like a lot of shorter passes
and like do you feel like your workload
increases like with him at quarterback
or just in general? Um, you know, for
me, like I just want to be available to
the quarterback. You know, any any pass
play, any play that he has stole the
football, um, you know, I if he can't
find if he can't see it downfield on a
play or something like that, like I I I
want to be in his vision. So, he knows
that I'm right there or somewhere on the
field um for him, but it if it's Cooper,
if it's Mike to like it, it doesn't
really matter who who it is. like I want
to make sure that they just know um that
they have me on as an outlet uh at all
times on the field and you know if if
they find it then that that's great but
you know obviously I'm just there to to
to help them out.
>> What's one thing over the years that
you've learned that like really like
works for you in terms of like taking
care of your body after a game and like
getting ready for the next week? Yeah,
I've been on a routine for uh two, three
years uh since I've been here and and
you know, God's covered my body and you
know, I really am just thankful for him
for doing that. Uh not missing games. Um
and just how I take the routine and how
serious I take the routine and I am
super consistent on it. Um but yeah,
like not missing games here has been has
been really the true blessing. Um
because just me being available for the
team uh is something that I I really
take pride in and you know I'm going
continue to keep on you know taking care
of my body how how I do it.
>> So what's like something like a little
something that you can share that you do
like is it like eat something or you
>> cool to like what do you kind of do that
you're
>> I think the hyperbaric machine or that I
have at my house has been like really
good for me. Um and then I've used a doc
like that he does like a lot of like
great body work. um for like a lot of
the guys. Uh but he he's super super
talented uh what he does and you know
he's he's really been helping me and and
a lot of the teammates out a lot. Um
just just making sure we're ready to go
for for the game.
>> How these guys have these guys have
handled you the last few times you
played. How much has that linger for you
guys? I know this is a different game
plan, different team this year.
>> Yeah.
>> How much has that lingered knowing that
Carolina's gotten after you guys last
couple? Yeah, I mean it puts a a
different motivation for us. Like we we
know that last season they beat us
twice. Um and for us like we have to
take that into account. You know they're
going to come in here hungry and you
know they're going to want to try to you
know come in here and try to beat us
again. So for us like it all starts with
our mentality and how we approach this
game and we have to approach this game
like it's a playoff game. Um and and you
got to approach every game like that.
But, you know, for for these guys, like
they come in here and they, you know,
they want to beat us in our home opener
at home and we we got to know that
that's what their plan is. So, we got to
do everything we can in practice this
week to to make sure that we, you know,
go in there with the right mindset and
and try to get a win.
>> Did you watch last year's tape of the
game here?
>> Yeah. Yeah, I did. I did. It was
>> 2110. You had like 100 yards rushing at
halftime.
>> Yeah, man. I know. And lost. It lost.
That's That's what I remember. I
remember that loss. So, you know, you
can do all all the good stuff in the
game. Um, but then when it comes down to
it, like, yeah, we got to finish the
game and it's going to be a four quarter
fight. So, we understand that we have to
go in there with with that mentality.
>> Bean, not trying to get you to single
anybody out, but how anxious are you to
see Mike get back to work.
>> Um, I mean, I know we're I know we're
ready to see Mike. Um, you know, I know
Mike's ready for himself. Like, forget
what we think. Like, it's it's on it's
him. like I know he's he wants to play
football. Um
but yeah, I mean I just pray for those
guys every day, all three of the
quarterbacks, but I know he wants to get
out there and and play. Um because it's
been a long time since he's been out
there.
>> Brian, what are some of the challenges
in not knowing what quarterback is going
to be starting on Sunday?
>> Um I think the only challenge to that is
um trying to develop the chemistry we
need um during the week. You know,
obviously we would love to have who's
going to be in on Sunday in there early
on in the week so that we can develop
chemistry and just try to get a rhythm
going. And um really that's the only
difficulty
>> when you look back at this last Sunday.
What do you guys want to clean up on
offense?
>> Uh we definitely want to um just, you
know, stay ahead of the sticks, stay
efficient in the run game, and just
eliminate all the um you know, penalties
and stuff like that that was just
setting us back. when you're diving up
the quarterback reps between Cooper and
Mike, talk about the balance of that and
what it's like at practice having those
two guys go out there.
>> Uh it's a perfect balance, you know,
honestly, you know, just making sure
both of those guys, you know, uh getting
a appropriate appropriate amount of reps
that um keeps both of them ready. So, um
we we're ready for either one of those
guys, you know, if Cooper or Mike have
to play, um you know, we just plug and
play and know we're ready to, you know,
take the field with either one of those
guys. first game you played with Bejian
Robinson. Thoughts on him?
>> Uh, great. You know, uh, better than
advertised, you know, um, you know,
which, you know, I I expected him to be,
you know, who he is and, um, you know,
he he didn't show me nothing less than,
you know, what I already knew.
>> Cool. Anyone else?
>> All right, Jack, first of all, what's
the conversation been like with you
between the coaches this week and kind
of this ongoing kind of quarterback
situation? Yeah, I mean the the deal has
kind of just been like keep continuing
to get better every week and that's kind
of what they've been telling me like
just keep you know focusing on like the
1% every day like trying to trying to
get better out of practice whether it's
in individual drills whether it's in any
you know team period 7 out7 that I might
get or whether it's in scout period so
uh for me they just say you know just
just keep keep getting better keep
learning from from all the other guys
watch what they're doing and watching on
film and just keep yeah keep keep trying
to do that.
>> Did you get more reps today out there?
Uh yeah, I got scout team reps today. Um
because Mike and Cooper splitting the
the team reps against the scout defense.
>> What do you feel like you need to see
like in order to feel like you're ready?
So, are you ready to start? Like what
are the coaches telling you? I guess
>> um you know, they haven't really t they
haven't really talked about that too
much. I think uh you know, big thing for
me has just been like trying to get as
many reps as I can. if I'm not getting
reps, I I just keep, you know, telling
myself and kind of telling everybody I
got to keep getting the mental reps and
and watching what the other guys are
doing because, you know, if you're the
backup going into a game, you're not
going to be getting a lot of reps um
going into the week. And it was kind of
like that, you know, in preseason going
to the Indianapolis game. And uh during
the week, the other guys were getting
the reps in the the joint practices and
then Coupe and I, you know, took the
reps in the game. And so that's kind of
how the life the life of a backup is.
you know, you're not going to be getting
a lot of live reps during the week, but
you still got to be uh watching the film
and like watching the other guys,
getting the reps, doing the doing the
metal reps in your head. So, if if the
moment comes, you're ready to do it.
>> Jack, what have you learned from
watching the other guys?
>> Um, I I' I've learned a ton from them. I
think a big thing has been um like
working with drop backs and with with
their feet and stuff and like kind of
just seeing, you know, how they get
aligned to throws and like how they
temple their drops based on certain
throws. Another thing has been like uh
watching their eyes on certain concepts.
like we'll have concepts where you need
to move a defender out of a window and
then come back to it like so you can so
you can throw the ball into that window
or uh you know start with your eyes down
the middle so you can see where the
safety's going and then pick a side base
on that. So, I think those are just a
couple of the little nuancy things I've
learned from the guys. And then
obviously with like watching film and
just learning, you know, a lot from
them, you know, defensive wise, like
defenses in the NFL, they play a lot
different than defenses in college. And
all those guys have been in the league
for a long time. They've seen a lot of
different stuff. So, um, they kind of
like they have an idea based on, you
know, what the front might be or where
the linebackers are line, where the
Dbacks are line, you know, what kind of
coverage you might be getting or be
getting pressure or something coming.
So, just been trying to pick up as much
as I can from them in that aspect. Aside
from the mental reps, what's the most
important part of your process right
now?
>> Um, I would say like after practice,
just pulling a couple guys aside and and
getting throws in because uh, you know,
I I that's stuff that there's stuff that
a lot of stuff I need to work on too,
like with my feet, uh, with my technique
and stuff and, you know, just being
accurate, being on time with my throws.
And so those guys, they've been like all
all the rookie guys, the Firebirds class
we call ourselves. Um, and they've, uh,
they've made me a member of it now, too,
after last week. Now this week, I've
been practicing with them, which is
cool. Um, but yeah, just like getting
those guys, you know, we do the
developmental period at the end of
practice and then after if there's like
a rep that we want to get again from
scout team or from one-on- ones or
something, then those guys are great
about like running another route for me
so I can throw to them or spotting up or
something for me so I can throw some
more balls.
>> How'd you guys get that nickname?
>> Uh, I'm not really sure. I think uh I
think the coaches I think coins gave it
to us actually.
>> Why did you get voted back or allowed
into it, I guess. Well, I think last
week cuz uh like we we had a couple
lifts and stuff towards the end of the
week and I was preparing uh to be the
backup for the game. So, I was they they
wanted me to be more focused on that, I
guess.
>> That's awesome. Do you feel like when
you know you're getting your reps, you
know, there's two lefties, two righties.
Do you notice the guys like having to
adjust like in between reps or anything
like that?
>> You mean like the guys who are catching?
Yeah.
>> Um I mean there there definitely is a
difference cuz you know the ball spins
the opposite way. I think that's
definitely the biggest thing. Um I've
seen some things honestly like with with
dropbacks and stuff from guys like I
remember a clip from a few years ago. Um
Lamar Jackson took a drop like a lefty.
Uh so he he flipped his drop, took a
drop like a lefty, moved the safety, you
know, to the other to the other side and
then was able to throw I think he threw
a pass down the seam or something. So
you know there is a difference
definitely I think for the defense
especially like a drop you know for
lefty versus righty and like you know
which side of the field you're throwing
to and stuff like sometimes it can be
easier you know for right to throw to
the right because you can see it a
little better. You don't have to you
know you're not blocked by your shoulder
looking to the left and vice versa for a
lefty it's maybe a little easier for
them to throw to the left. So, I think,
you know, there's there's definitely
some little uh nuancy things like that,
but I think in terms of like a receiver
catching the ball, the the spin of the
ball is definitely the biggest thing.
>> Jack Cooper's done this for a long time
and he's been a backup in this league
for a very long time. His preparation
looks different than Mike's has in the
past and from two certainly. What's the
most valuable piece of advice that
you've gotten from Cooper? Um, I think
just the way that, you know, I was
talking about the way that all the all
the guys like talk about defenses and
the way they look at defenses and Gooan,
I think this is this is his 10th year in
the league now. So, he's kind of he's
kind of seen it all. He's been in a
couple different schemes, you know,
played for some different coaches,
played for some different teams with um,
you know, a lot of different players,
seen a lot of different stuff. So, just
hearing what like he's seeing on film
kind of throughout the week and seeing
what I can take from that. Like this
week I was talking to him about certain
stuff that we were, you know, seeing
from the Panthers and like, you know,
how we can predict different things
based on that and um stuff that he was
seeing on film that like I might I I,
you know, haven't seen before. So stuff
that I might not be able to pick up on.
So I'm just trying to talk to him and
figure out the way that he sees things,
the way that he goes through a week
watching film and, you know, try to take
as much of that as I can.
>> Um, just talk through some of the
challenges of not knowing who's going to
be starting a game heading into Sunday
at quarterback. Um, I mean, for me, not
necessarily a challenge. Just go out
there and do my job to the best ability
to help those guys out. Whatever's going
on back there. Um, I got to try to make
them right. That's part of my job. So,
that's all my whole thought process
about it all. And, um, just make sure
I'm the best version of myself for this
team.
>> You have both Cooper and Mike taking
reps with the first team. How important
is it for both of those guys to get a
balanced look ahead of Sunday?
>> Uh, very important. I mean, um, again,
just go out there and do my job and try
to be that open target that I can be for
them. Um, and just go pluck it out the
air and and make plays. And I think
that's the the the whole mantra in the
wide receiver room right now is just go
out there, do our jobs, try to help as
much as we possibly can.
>> Looking back on the game on Sunday,
what's some things that you guys want to
get better at?
>> Uh, just clean up clean up football in
general. Um, the flags, things like
that. Um, and then taking advantage of
of of bad football as well. Um, going
down there and making making most of our
ops.
>> You've seen Mike grind from last
November onward. To watch him, you know,
out there and practicing with you guys,
how much do you enjoy seeing him won and
how did he practice in your eyes today?
>> Uh, it's always good to see Mike out
there. Um, obviously that's that's what
he loves to do and that's slinging the
pill. So, um, it was really really good
to see that. Um, and it's cool to see
him fight back that hard to get back for
this team, you know. Um, and he's been
looking great.
>> How's it affect you, I guess, not
knowing yet which quarterback it's going
to be like game plan wise or anything
like that?
>> Uh, it doesn't really affect me too
much. Again, I just got to go out there
and do my job.
>> Is it hard not to get frustrated with
low target days though?
>> I mean, you you can get frustrated all
you want, right? But I'm more frustrated
about the loss than anything else. I
mean, I could care less about the
targets. I in my opinion I I think we
should have won that game if we if we
capitalized on a lot of stuff. Um you
know flags, things like that. ZB's um
big almost house call that he had that
would have set us up for to you know um
be in the lead at that point. So just
little things like that that we could
clean up as a football team and um Coach
Ski is doing an amazing job at that and
uh today felt really really good.
Another step in the right direction for
us. you know better than a lot of people
how competitive Mike is. Just
>> playing football, off the field, all
those things. He's a competitor. How
would you describe his competitive
nature?
>> Um
his competitive nature is is um it's I
don't know the right word to to use for
it, but I'll say it's silent because,
you know, he's not going to talk too
much. He's not going to go out there and
and make a whole ordeal about himself
and things like that, but when it's when
it's time to go into the fire, like he
going to be the first one to walk in
there. Um, and that's what I love about
him. Um, and two, he he just let lets it
all hang out there and then just has fun
and and rips the ball how how he knows
to.
>> Obviously, you want to win the next
game, but this one is in the division
against the Panthers, one that they have
kind of gotten the best of you guys the
past couple of years. So, what's the
sense of urgency like just getting ready
for this game?
>> Uh, we just got to go win.
that.
>> Mhm.
>> What's your Nate Ali nickname?
>> What you say?
>> What's so Nate Ali says he g says he
gives everybody a nickname. What's
yours?
>> Uh bottom of the boot.
>> Bottom of the boot.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> Do you going to explain to me what that
means?
>> I'm from Louisiana. So, you know, they
call Louisiana the boot. I'm from the
bottom of Louisiana.
>> There we go. For sure. For sure.
>> How' Sunday go?
>> Uh, you know, collectively as a group,
you know, definitely not the outcome
that we want. Um, you know, and that
comes with just deliberate work in
during the week and just being more
deliberate about the little things. Um,
you know, getting off of blocks
defensively wise, getting off blocks.
Um, dominating the line of scrimmage.
Um, you know, just playing complimentary
football. Um, and that's really what it
boils down to, but um, not enough to get
the win.
>> You talked when you first got here about
feeling like I think you said celebrated
rather than tolerated. Has that
continued and do you think that that's
led to you sort of reaching more of your
potential?
>> Uh, you know, yeah. Um, I personally,
you know, I think I'm the same. I've
been the same person this whole time.
Um, but yeah, I mean, it definitely
helps to know that somebody got your
back. Somebody, you know, wants to see
you win. So, not to say that where I
was, they didn't want to see me win or
anything like that, but, you know,
somebody really that really, you know,
has their best foot forward for you and,
you know, trying to put you in position
to do what you got to do. Um, but yeah,
I think I mean that definitely still
sticks true, man. You're definitely
ready to be celebrated for sure.
>> What's the comfort level with Javon?
Obviously, he just got here and y'all
are kind of still learning each other.
>> Um, you know, I've been knowing Dex for
a little minute now. Um, we met at
actually um at a Miami visit in high
school.
>> Oh, okay.
>> Um, but you know, we never really
formally
>> um got to meet each other, you know,
just kind of through passing. Um, my
rookie year, we played them, you know,
talked a little bit then, but um we've
had similar coaches. my my coach, my
rookie year was his coach the last two
years. So, you know, obviously been seen
some things about him. And, uh, bro,
Dex's a great dude. Um, and when when it
when the trade happened, um, you know, I
always thought good things, you know,
just because I have somebody to push me.
Not that I didn't, but, you know, um,
for me, competition is only going to
bring the best out of everybody. Um, so
I I feel like it was a great move and I
love to have Dex here,
>> another young guy. Obviously, he's not
under contract next year, but the idea
of building a group here of young sort
of defensive tackles and maybe when
those two edges get back, do you start
thinking about that yet?
>> Uh, I mean, not not really. Um, you
know, I just try to take it one week at
a time. Uh, and how coach said, you
know, 17 sprints, not a marathon. So,
you just got to uh, you know, you just
got to put everything in the pieces and,
you know, kind of just go down the way
each game by each game.
>> Mason, what do you enjoy about playing
in this defense? Um really just being
able to um just kind of go with my move
and what I see fit is how it kind of
goes. Uh you know in different in
different schemes of defense um you
might have to be you know the fit up
player or um even just kind of holding
up for the linebacker. So in this
defense I can just go play ball um see
ball get ball kind of thing. And I not
necessarily that I can't be wrong but
it's a lot it's a lot of things that
I'll have to do to be wrong. So, um,
really just being able to go out there
and play attack and just get off the
ball and wreak havoc and, you know,
figure things out on the run.
>> What's impressive about what Zidius was
able to do? Limited s limited snaps out
there and he gets two sacks in his first
game back.
>> I mean, you know, he's just a ball
player, man. Uh, at the end of the day,
coming off the couch, coming off
anything, um, you know, to have two
sacks in your first game back after not
playing down there a full year last
year, you know,
>> that just speaks volume to who he is as
a player. Um, and as a human being off
the off the field, um, you know, just
taking care of his body, being that
being the older guy, um, and still being
able to play at a high level, it just
shows, you know, how serious he is about
his craft and about getting better.
>> I know you said you want to clean stuff
up, more complimentary football, but
when you watch the tape against
Pittsburgh, what's something you liked?
>> Um, defensively, you know, I I think
that we held our own against them. Um,
you know, a big thing for us coming into
the week was, uh, just Aaron Rogers
cadence, how he uses as a weapon and,
uh, we didn't have any, to my knowledge,
we didn't have any offsides or anything
like that. So, you know, just the
dialing in on the and being deliberate
on the little things, just stuff like
that and just, you know, being able to
control somewhat control the line of
scrimmage and the run game. Um, and, you
know, just being a force on the front.
>> In camp, it came up that you hadn't had
a real offseason, you know, like
training regimen at all. So here's one,
how did you spend your off seasonasons
in years past? And and two, how did you
get kind of involved in one uh here?
>> Um you know uh in my first two years my
off seasonason, not to not necessarily
to say that I didn't have a plan, but it
just never was a dayby-day plan. Um and
then coming into this off season,
talking to one of my vets, uh Eric
Armstead, uh we just kind of just came
up with something that, you know, would
be beneficial to me. um working with a
certain trainer, um working with a
certain agility coach. So really just
having that um you know every single
day, Monday through Friday. Um that
really was the biggest difference. Um
and yeah, that's I would say that.
>> How much did it help you do you think?
>> Uh you know, like I said at the
beginning, I think I've been the same
person. Um I think it's just for me just
getting over the little things, getting
strong, getting a little bit stronger in
in certain areas. Um, and just staying
on it, you know, not allowing myself to
get big. Um, keeping my weight and and
where it's supposed to be. Um, and just
growing as growing my body as a whole.
I'm 23 years old, so it's still, you
know, got some growing to do.
>> But, um, yeah, just being able to get
everything down pack for sure.
>> So, a lot of what you did, was it gym
stuff? Was it pass rush stuff? Like,
what were you doing maybe more that you
hadn't in yours past?
>> Gym stuff for sure. Um, really just
static movements. So, I've always been
explosive. Um, so really just, you know,
the starting and stopping, uh, having
strength through that. Um, just striking
or, you know, just getting getting
people off my chest, lower leg strength.
Um, you know, coming off of ACL in
college, I never really had a time to
really grow my lower body back. So,
really just being deliberate on lower
body and everything like that.
>> Was that here or like who did you train
with?
>> Uh, no. I trained in Dallas um with a
strength coach by the name of Joey
Burgles.
>> How did you get kind of locked in with
him? Uh, like I said, my uh one of my
vets, Eric Armstead, Yeah. kind of u put
me in that direction. Told me I needed
to go work with him and that's
ultimately what I did.
>> Go back to what Maria was saying that
he's going to have you guys over on
Thursday.
>> Yeah. Yeah.
>> What what can that like just mean for
you guys as a group?
>> Uh really just fellowship, bro. Um you
know, when when a lot of guys get not to
say that it's just a rag tag team, but
you know, when a lot of guys get brought
from different places, you don't really
know too much about somebody. Um, and I
feel like, you know, once you know
somebody why, you could really, you
know, fight for them a different way,
you know. Um, so really just learning
each other, fellowship, getting to know
each other, cuz like I said, ultimately
that's going to help us on Sundays.
