Applied Science for Global Impact | ICTP Science, Technology & Innovation
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The Science, Technology, and Innovation Unit at ICTP focuses on applied research supported by three specialized laboratories designed to foster collaboration with universities and other institutions. The Marconi Lab concentrates on telecommunications, while the Scientific Fab Lab addresses science communication and STEM education initiatives. Additionally, the M Lab is dedicated to advanced instrumentation and microelectronics, providing a robust infrastructure for technical innovation within the organization.
A central goal of this unit is to create an inclusive environment where young researchers, particularly those from developing countries, can access these facilities and conduct joint research projects with established experts. By leveraging technology, the work carried out in the STI Unit amplifies ICTP's global impact, extending its reach beyond traditional boundaries through digital means and shared knowledge networks that empower emerging scientific communities worldwide.
Looking toward the future, there is a strategic shift intended to prioritize sustainability across multiple dimensions, including environmental stewardship and what is termed "knowledge sustainability." This latter concept emphasizes ensuring that partners fully own the solutions developed in collaboration with ICTP, thereby fostering long-term independence and local capacity building rather than creating dependency on external support.
Ultimately, the unit aims to transform isolated research efforts into multiplied global effects by integrating advanced technology with educational outreach and sustainable development practices. By combining cutting-edge laboratory resources with a commitment to empowering researchers from diverse backgrounds, ICTP seeks to build resilient scientific ecosystems that can address complex challenges while ensuring that innovations remain accessible and owned by local communities globally.

The Science, Technology, and Innovation
Unit at the ICTP deals with applied
research.
We have three [music] labs, the Marconi
Lab, which is with telecommunication and
university research.
We have the Scientific Fab Lab, which
deals with science communication [music]
and STEM education.
And we have the M Lab, which is about
advanced instrumentation and
microelectronics. [music]
The ICTP environment allows young
researchers, especially [music] from
developing countries, to benefit from
our labs and carry out research together
with us. In the future, [music] I would
like the unit to focus more on
sustainability, not only on the
environmental sustainability, but also
knowledge sustainability, meaning that
our partners should take full ownership
of the solution developed at ICTP
[music] in collaboration with us.
The work we carry out in the STI unit
allows us to multiply [music] the
effects of what ICTP is doing all over
the world through technology.
