This corn field in Houston County is doing more than producing a crop. [music] It's producing information that could help farmers across Alabama make better decisions next season. Today, Extension Agronomic Crops Agent Cedric Mack is checking a corn variety trial planted on Circle W Farms. >> Research station is great, uh but on farm a lot of farmers like to see work [music] that's done on farm because of bigger acres on on the research farms there are small test plots, [music] which are great, but on farms a lot of times the soil type changes, the CEC changes. There's a lot of variabilities in these fields [music] versus research farms, which research farms do have those, but these are just larger scales. >> Those real-world conditions [music] help answer one of farming's biggest questions, which varieties perform the best under local conditions. >> The biggest one is what variety for sure yields the highest, you know, that's that's that's what pays, you know, we need a variety that's uh going to yield the highest with less [music] inputs. Uh so, that's the whole objective of these uh research trials is is finding out which one is the the highest yielding and which one requires less [music] inputs. >> For farmer Andy Williams, opening his fields to Extension research is nothing new. His family's partnership with Extension stretches back generations. >> When I was 5 or 6 years old, my father had research [music] plots on this farm with Extension way back then with peanuts. We have done research with Extension ever since then. I wholeheartedly believe in it. I have people coming here all the time. I says, "Is it proven by [music] the Extension Service?" That's my first question. If it's not proven by the Extension Service, >> [music] >> I don't want it. >> Williams says the research doesn't just benefit his farm, it helps farmers throughout the region. >> He's wanting our help, and he's wanting to help others, you know, cuz [music] plant and that's the beauty about this, too, you know, planting this here on the farm. He's using this information for his farm, but it's allowing other growers to to benefit from it as well. >> Once the crop is harvested, the data will be shared during winter production meetings, giving farmers the information they need before buying seed for next year's crop. For Williams, that's exactly why these partnerships matter. >> Our farmers are more profitable because of the extension service. Uh could not imagine going through [music] the farming year without the extension service. For everything from jury dough pod blasting to just the general information [music] that this done at the all the fair observations, it is invaluable to the farmer. The farmers would not be as profitable if it weren't for the extension service.
