Well, there's a new twist in the controversy surrounding the late Cambridge professor Jason Arde. The academic who publicly raised plagiarism allegations against Arda has now been suspended by his own university in Belgium. Nathan Kaufn says he's being investigated for discrimination while Gent University says that the suspension is a precautionary measure as it conducts a preliminary disciplinary investigation. The move comes less than two weeks after Arde, who had been held as Cambridge's youngest black professor, was found dead in London following his resignation from the university. There are now questions about what prompted the suspension and what it means for the wider controversy surrounding him. And joining us now is Dr. Jerry Coin, professor emiris of ecology and evolution at the University of Chicago. So, first of all, what exactly do we know about why Nathan Kofnesses has been suspended? And what is being investigated right now? >> Well, it's not absolutely clear. I mean, they said he was suspended because he was creating a climate of hatred and discomfort at at the University of Gent. That's what the record said at least. But they've seemed I mean Gent seems to have bowed to a lot of outside pressure by people who are appalled that Jason already came out dead at the end of this. And so thousands of letters have arrived at Gent saying get rid of coughnness who after all he did was disclose that Ard had committed plagiarism in his PhD thesis and then the press and everybody else took it from there culminating in Rday's death. But as far as I can see Gent has suspended Kaufness simply because they blame him as the cause of Ard's death because he revealed the plagiarism which seems somewhat unfair. Coffnus has also been uh accused of you know being uh you could say racist. Uh he has obviously spoken a lot about eugenics uh in the past. He is certainly a character who has uh received a lot of scrutiny for uh his his beliefs. Is it fair to say that that was involved in the case that he made against our day or do you think that you know it's not really fair to make that assumption? I don't think it's fair because that involves psychologizing coughness and assuming that he's thinking, well, I'm going to bring down this black man, so I'm going to call him out for plagiarism. Um, Coughnness has been working on the genetics of IQ and race for a long time. Some people don't like that area. Um, I myself don't work on it, but I don't think that work on it should be banned. So um you know I don't think he bears any responsibility for our day's death. All he did was something that seems cubrious. He simply revealed to the world that a famous professor at Cambridge University and the youngest black professor they ever had committed egregious plagiarism. And that led from one thing to another to the press and everybody else finding out that our day had fabricated basically his whole life story saying that he was did not speak until he was eight, that he did not could not read and write until he was 18 years old, that he ran 30 marathons in 35 days. A number of crazy things like that that did not stand up to inspection. So >> why did co choose to to focus on his case in the first place? >> Um I really don't know why he decided to investigate it. But you know again that even asking that question presumes that there are racist motivations and you know Koffnus was a famous professor. um he was getting a lot of press on his own with all these wild stories and it could well be that Kaufman just said well you know let's see how qualified this guy really is let me run some of his CV through a um checking program and that's what he did and again I don't know Koftus' motivations at all and I don't know Arda's motivations for killing himself or indeed his motifications for fabricating his whole life story all we can say is what happened and people that haven't revealed what they thought about it are, you know, that's something. >> Well, I don't think it's even been confirmed that Arday even killed himself from what I understand. They haven't released uh, you know, the results. >> Uh, >> yeah. I mean, everybody thinks everybody thinks it's suicide. He was found dead in his place and they said it was no foul play and there was no obvious reason. I bet dollars to donuts that it was suicide, but again, yes, we don't know that. Um, but we'll never know what was in his mind because he's no longer with us. >> Yeah. Uh, you know, obviously this is just, you could say, a bit of a bizarre, uh, story.
