A WEIRD BUNGALOW WITH A WALL PLATE IN THE WRONG PLACE !
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video documents the restoration of a bungalow featuring an unusual construction detail where wall plates are positioned on the exterior rather than the interior, a practice the narrator has not encountered in forty years of bricklaying work. Upon inspecting the site, the builder identifies several structural issues, including loose bond closures that fail to provide necessary strength and headers that are beginning to drop due to a lack of support. The primary focus of the repair involves addressing these weak points by removing specific bricks around the window jambs and window lintels to allow for proper reinforcement. The narrator decides to pack most of the cavity with slate to secure the loose elements, though he acknowledges that the final brick near the lintel will remain unsupported underneath due to the unique geometry of the wall plate, requiring a careful slotting technique to fit it in place.
Throughout the process, the builder encounters challenges related to the tight angles and the condition of the existing mortar beds, which are often uneven or damaged from previous work. To resolve these issues, he removes certain bricks to clean up the black dye and bruised mortar, then meticulously prepares new bricks by flattening their beds to ensure a snug fit without pushing out surrounding material. He notes that because there is no insulation in the cavity, installing a cavity tray is not feasible, so the strategy relies on tightly packing the remaining space with slate and ensuring the wall plates are fully supported to distribute weight evenly across the lintels. The narrator also mentions that some props will remain in place for several weeks until winter conditions stabilize, allowing the structure to settle properly before final completion.
The project is a collaborative effort involving a friend named Colin, a window fitter who discovered the channel through YouTube and has since referred additional jobs, including conservatory installations. As the repair nears completion, the builder finishes patching the gaps with small aggregate to achieve a weathered aesthetic that matches the existing masonry, though he admits a preference for a slightly more battered look over a perfectly recessed finish. Once the last brick is slotted in and secured, the wall is ready for the window installation, marking the successful conclusion of this specific repair task. The video concludes with a brief update on the narrator's driving lessons, where his instructor has returned after a previous departure due to surgery, resulting in significant improvement in his driving skills before signing off with a call to action for viewers to subscribe and engage with the channel.

Got a weird bond closure in it here.
Another new one for me. This never seen
this before. That's not giving strength
to anything cuz it's loose. So there's
that. Now it's glue.
[bell]
Right.
Wednesday,
the 1st of July, I think.
Yeah, that's it.
2026 is half gone officially.
Right.
Looks like we've got no link in here.
Can't see one. And all the headers are
starting to drop. I'm not sure the full
headers.
I'll have to see.
And got a weird bond closure in it.
Quarter bond. And then just not even
almost brick on brick there.
So we'll work something out with this.
And then we've got the bricks tucked up
behind the facial board. There's a half
in the middle and there's a half there.
So, let's see what we find inside. Hope
it's not an Irish word. Thank you.
So, let's start having a look inside. At
least we don't need acros.
>> Yeah.
>> Right. Let's get on with it. [music]

>> Right, that's the demo bit done. Another
new one for me. This never seen this
before.
Wall plates on the outside
empty cavity,
but it has had it has had towise done.
As you can see on the chimney job you
will have seen by now. You saw we found
loads of them. Gable end was done.
So, it's um here you go. It's the little
tiny
looks like a like a a resin.
I don't know. Another one there. Another
one there. Another one there. So,
there's plenty in especially around the
around the window jams which are really
fun. So these things I might take these
out cuz the headers to give strength,
but that's not giving strength to
anything cuz it's loose. So there's
that.
That's that can probably stay in. I
might just pack that up with slate. That
one again. Pack that up with slate. I
might just take these two out.
And then um we're going to have to pack
pack the wall plate as we go from here.
And then the last couple of bricks in
the center. Well, I won't be able to
pack them with anything. So it'll just
be a tiny little bit where the B run is
where where the wall plate won't be
supported. But you're talking I thought
at the most rest of it were packed up
with motor. Yeah, it's weird seeing on
the outside like that.
It's a bungalow.
I don't know what why that changes where
you put the wall plate. Like I say, I've
always
ever since I've been 40 years I've been
doing this wall plates going on the
inside.
So, um, yeah, it's all down now. Alex
just getting the bridge cleaned up. Got
a bit of black dye. A bruise arrived.
So, I'm going to go and have a have a
quick buddy. Alex is nipping off about
half past 9. He's driving lesson. So, as
long as he's got all the bricks cleaned
and everything loaded back up, I'm okay.
I'll just I'll just plow along. Um,
because
got like two and a half courses above
the lintle.
I don't think we're going to put a tray
in it. We can't fix the tray to anything
because of these headers.
Uh we're not insulating it because
there's no insulation anywhere. So not
not bothering the insulation. And we
might just put some in behind the link.
There's no point getting put a cavity
train roof for that that far.
So we're just uh just just a bit tight
with the upstand on these headers.
Hence they might be coming out. So, um,
get me brew and get back at it after
brew.
Just try to before that goes.
>> The brick's in the way.
>> Yeah. Brick out.
>> Yeah. Another bridge coming out of that
one. Pain, but it's got to be done.
[music]
Right. Goes in
tight.
So, I'm going to take it back out. I'm
going to pack these up with slate.
Might take the middle two out to be
honest.
The other problem, too. And then get
that half back in down there.
And get it beded on. That's it. I got a
couple of nails at the back of it. Stop
it dropping back. Bit of black.
get me started. Um, yeah.
Heat.
There you go. Well, that one's out. And
I've patched that one. I'm going to get
a little bit of brick and patch that
one.
Yeah. Doing anything now.
Tie the this this stretch here. Well, um
I can't even get get one
between the lintle and the wall because
the lint goes right up. There's no room
for it. So, yeah, it' be fine. a little
bit of bit down there and get this all
patched up and click on

>> So, a cute little background about this
job. This is through Colin who is the
glass man who we met at the Burko uh
bungalow renovation job because he
watches on YouTube and he's become a
good friend and he's a window fitter
obviously. So now he started throwing
lentils our way quite a few jobs
actually even a conservatory. So thanks
Colin you probably watching and customer
has said um he saw the YouTube on the
side of a look. So he's um he's been
watching us last night and subscribed.
So yeah, made up. So here you go. I've
just flushed it and brushed it to
weather it weather it away like that.
Shame you haven't got any um
small um aggregate to put in to give
that effect.
It's like a recessed effect. I mean this
little point and brush that back. Yeah,
I've got got this the headers in a lot
neater. I've got closures in to bond it.
probably bunk the one can go the bunk
can go missing above where it's only
seeing a bit of a brick but so far it's
it's working and then each brick I put
in I'm packing it up tight to the um
wall plate so it's it's it'll be
supported just be the last brick that I
put in won't be able to do that cuz
that'll be a split be slotted in letter
box style the lintil is nice and solid
nowhere that um and the prop can stay on
3 weeks I think before the winters are
done. The winter's still open. I've
tried them so that prop can stay in.
And yeah, Alex is on his way back now. I
need to ask him how his lesson went to.
I didn't ask him on the phone. So, um
yeah, got just a course to run in and
then the top ones to slot in. So, I
can't more to pack them above. I just
need to pack them tight from below like
that. So, this the touch
that's that's what I'm doing. the top
the top beds all over the place cuz I
don't know if the wall plates angle
straight. Yeah, just a little bit of
slotting. And then after this, I'm going
going down to the uh the bungalow
renovation job which is that way about a
mile and the coping arrived last week.
So, we're going to get that last coping
put back on, get that finished off and
that's the uh that'll be complete. Might
have a little walk around with the
camera of the levels.
Um
yeah. That's what we're up to. So, just
waiting for us to get back. He can do
the mix for them. I'll just have a
little tidy up. Yeah, it's worked out
better than I thought. It's um I thought
it was going to be really awkward this,
but it hasn't been too bad.
Yeah. Excellent. So, let's get back to
it.
Glamorous assistant has returned.
Somebody asked me glamorous assistant
wasn't the last night or the other
night.
That's good that cuz that means they're
regular viewers. Well, they've been with
us a while. So, there you go. It's all
in except for the last piece. It looks a
bit wonky cuz I' all I'm doing is
flushing it and brushing it to take it
back to weathered. I don't think I don't
really like that. That doesn't match.
Nothing like so. I'd rather make it look
something like. So, a bit battered than
weathered. But anyway, there's my last
piece. And the only way of getting that
in is to cut it slightly slightly
smaller than that. So, when you put it
in on top of the bed, it'll just seal
the top. So, all these all these are
tight against the wall plate. So, that
wall plate's well supported and the
weight spread evenly across the lintle.
Um, I took three brick. I had three
spurs. So, I managed to me mess around
with the bond. Put a closures in and
bring it.
Well, English English bond, isn't it?
Headers on my stretches. Stretches on
headers. So, yeah. I'm just going to
slide this last one in. Andy White gave
you which is perfect for linkers.
Bit of go on your T.
Give it a tap.
Now it's glue.
So now you can do that.
Insert your bed.
Two of them.
A bit too much actually cuz these are
very tight beds.
So,
come close out.
Flatten the bed out.
And we have to take the front edge off
it.
Really shamper it down like that.
If we don't do that, when we push the
brick in, it'll just push the bed off.
So,
try and get some fits.
So, this is the only brick on the um the
whole room that won't be packed
underneath the wall plate. So, in a
tight angle,
as tight as you can get it, and then
when you get in, you flip it,
pull it back,
won't break. Bigger bed than I thought.
Got two. Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
It's probably good.
A bit busy with the pieces, but a lot
less busy than it was before. At least
it makes sense now.
As you can see, the old bond where the
bond was. So, we've just basic switched
it around and made it look good. Made a
nice strong job of it. And that's ready
for the window to go in now.
So, I'll um hand you down to Alex and he
can do a little outro for this one.
>> There we go.
Another little done more or less without
me this time. Not driving unless I went
well. A lot better than the last
instructor I had before.
Long story short, my first instructor
had to leave for surgery. Then obviously
cuz I was stuck, I had another
instructor. Load of crap. And I'm back
with my old instructor and things are
going great.
But that's the end of the video. So,
thank you very much for watching. If you
