A new Way to Catch Tough Striped Bass for us (episode 2)

Good morning to you guys. It is super bright and early. Sun just came up. Looks like we got a nice little breeze going. I got some uh hotel coffee going. It's It's drinkable. It's drinkable. Looks like we got a little bit of breeze, a little chilly. I just got out of the shower, felt tremendous. It's 5:00. Doesn't look like a lot of fish were weighed in last night. Well, one guy's got a pretty good run, pretty good run on the lead with like 4-in average. He had entered a bunch of fish and he had like a 46, 47-in average and then he got knocked down cuz he wasn't entering them correctly, I guess. But, there's only one guy that weighed in four fish, which is pretty amazing. You know, we didn't feel great about what we caught last night. After talking to some people that Cody knew, a lot of those really good charter boats that were out there fishing near us that are there every single day actually zeroed for the first time ever. That's how off the fishing was and how much the fish moved last night. So, they actually zeroed. So, we did not do as bad as we felt we did. We ended up catching six. We had seven bites. Kind of pulled a bonehead move and didn't weigh in a 42 and 1/2, a 40, and a 39 and 1/2 just cuz we had we had different thoughts on what it was going to take to to put you at the top of the leader boards boat for boat in the side cash. Dudley and I took Josh last night. And uh Josh and Cody, we beat them last night and I believe we're ahead of Stephen, Brandon's dad. Their boat, I don't know the names of everybody in their boat, but on the leader board there's not enough names on there to uh qualify. So, just between Josh and I's 43s, I think that puts us in the lead boat for boat, but it's going to take a lot more than that today. So, I'm pumped for today cuz my track for fishing is not extensive, but it's mostly done with Dudley and he is always always always found the fish for us no matter what the conditions are, no matter how hard they are to find. He has always always always found the fish. Doesn't matter what river we're in, what part of the ocean we're in. The dude is just fishy and he finds them and I'm pretty excited for that today. He's got a little something going in about 3 or 4 hours, three about 4 hours uh after the tide change when the bite usually turns on anyway. He's he's got a really good idea where the boat needs to be at that point. I'm excited for that. We're going to get 3 or 4 hours ahead of time to try to just figure something out, and then we got all day to try to find some fish. I got a message from boy, they were catching some fish I guess last night on the beach or in front of the beach, but then as soon as it got dark, it just went all to heck. So, not a good bite last night down down this part of the state, but we got all day today and and a half day tomorrow to try to catch some fish. So, here we go, guys. Come along. Although we didn't do as well as we could have and we should have weighed some more fish. You're looking at two guys that at least did get paid from last night cuz we beat Corey and Josh for a bunch of green backs. >> Woo! It's still got Corey's uh cologne on it. >> [laughter] >> Looks like those were just dug up out of a coffee can out of the back of Corey's yard. We just got off the phone with Steven, Brandon's dad, and they only got what? 128 inches all they got on the board last night, too. So, apparently we did not do as bad as we thought we did. All righty, guys. We're back at it. We just launched there. Had a little breakfast this morning. So, I'm just jump right there, Bob. >> Sturgeon. >> Sturgeon? >> Sturgeon. >> Hard way sturgeon in today. But, we're we just loaded down in Saco. We're going to look around the river a little bit. That's uh We're cutting the river. We're river monsters. But, we got a high tide right now. We're going to go do a little soul searching till that half hour switch on high tide, then we know exactly where we want to be on that switch for that first half hour to first hour or so I think we're on a pretty good bite when it changes. So, till then, anything we catch before that's going to be a bonus. Let's go see if we can find them. What do you think, Bob? We going to find them? >> I think we going to find something today. We just got to find the right ones. >> I like it. All right, we found some mackerel, guys. We found some mackerel. We're going to try to load up with some mackerel and then go back in there when the tides are right and uh see if we can find some before the change and then we know where to go when we get a change. Return of the max. Oh, full tree. Every hook. That was all us. It's so cool cuz you catch one and they start biting and then every fly you got on that Sabiki rig starts dancing and then they go nuts over those. It just helps you catch more. >> Ooh. >> Nice. I lost the other three but they were small but that's that's the donkey. That's my donkey donkey. Get in the boat. >> Full tree. >> All right guys, we're hooked up. We're doubled up. We're out here mackerel fishing. Dudley saw spotted school of stripers move through so we we jumped on it. This one's taking me to the depth. We're in about 100 ft of water. I never caught stripers so deep and he's digging. What do you think old boy? >> I think we just a little bit of fun or what? >> squirrel can find a nut every once in a while. >> Something about a clock being a broken clock being is right a couple times a day or something. >> Exactly. >> Something like that. We have no idea the size of these fish. I saw their tails when they swam by. There was a school of about jeez, 20 something. I think they're going to be pretty good ones. Yeah. I mean I'm not I'm not gingerly but he's kicking my butt. Oh, he just stopped. >> He surely is a striper, right? >> Might be red fish. Swam up from Louisiana and Florida. >> From 100 ft deep? >> Yeah, all the way up here to Maine. >> You got to look yet? >> No, I'm in like the back end. >> I mean this is fighting harder than my 40 ft yesterday. I'm out leader. How's he look? >> Like a big one. >> 40? >> Big one. Damn, I'm scared of this fish. >> Lot of open water, they fight a lot different. We got color, Joe. He catches a 42. I catch a 42. There's our our lines look like a spider web. And now Mr. Sabiki is on the You can see it floating wrapped around. All right, we're We're on the struggle bus pretty hard. I just looked at the standings. I'm actually in fifth place with two fish. If David measured all three of his fish, he'd be in either second or third. So, everybody's struggling. What's been working for the last month or two is not working this week for some reasons. We're going to keep thinking outside the box. We're out here in the ocean. We're going to keep looking around. We're going to check a beach. I don't know. Never know. We did locate a few fish this morning. They just weren't having it. And now we got some fresh mackerel. Maybe we'll Maybe we can get them. I don't know. What do you think, buddy? >> I think it's a good plan. >> Yeah. So, right now every fish counts and we're going to actually weigh in all four fish that we catch from now on. All right, guys. We came in the jetty, mouth of the river. Just had a few bites. David caught a 28 and a half, was it? Keeper. >> 29. >> 29. Got a 29. And uh he's going to release that one to the grease, I think, cuz uh he just got it What did it have in its belly? >> Eight green crabs, the invasive specie of Maine, and uh mackerel. >> So, >> Look at all these sharks, Joe. >> It's crazy. >> Look at all the sharks. >> Sharks. Sharks. Sharks. We caught two good ones somewhere way out there. >> 100 ft of water out there. >> In that way. >> Mackerel fishing. >> Yeah. And we were We just happened to run up on a school 6 in below the surface. We made two casts and caught two 42-in fish. >> We're back out in the ocean, guys. The only thing The only way we're getting bit. So, we came back out here. Oh. DANG IT. >> [screaming] >> DANG IT. THIS IS A GOOD ONE. >> YEAH. >> I'M GOING TO BRING HIM into these other guys. Yes. That's a 38, right? 36? >> That's a 30 30-something. >> Well, you needed that one. >> Woo, we needed it bad, buddy. We needed it bad. I'm not going to lie. >> Ooh, looking looking more like 39er. >> Tell me when he's there. >> Right there now. >> 39, easy. 39er. >> Yes, thanks, buddy. >> What do you say he went? 39? >> 39. >> Sweet. We'll take him. So, I think that's my fourth fish, but I've only officially weighed three. >> Oh, okay. >> Yeah, but that still puts me in like third place. All right, guys. That was my third official weighed-in fish. That puts me in fourth place, I think, overall. Um >> It's only three fish. >> And it's only three fish. So, if I can land one more, that's going to put me right up there in the top two, three spots and and and looking pretty good. I was puckered up on that one. I'm not going to lie after breaking those other two off and we missed about four or five others. We're definitely on to something. We're figuring something out here. No one else is doing this. We're out in the mackerel grounds and we're finding like a bass fish. It kind of a light bulb went off for us like a month ago when David and I were here. Then he came back and the light bulb shined bright. He He figured it out, figured it out, figured it out and then this morning we were just struggling throwing the structure and throwing the islands and throwing the beaches, throwing the sand eels that we just got to throw our hands up. It's like we know there's fish out there roaming around. They're like a needle in a haystack. We flew the drone. It's really hard. I mean, you when you see you can see them easy, but it's just hard to work the drone and fish and run the boat and everything else at the same time. So, we we've kind of got something going here. We started laying down some waypoints as to where these fish are. We're offshore. We're in the ocean. 120 ft deep? >> Yeah. >> 120 ft deep and we're catching these fish. The fights are out of this world. You know, like I thought a 40-incher or 42-incher fought hard when it was in 12 ft of water, but I'll tell you what, fight it in 120 ft of water, you'll know. But we're we're dropping dots every time we get a bite. Every time we get a bite we're dropping dots so we can kind of put a pattern see like if they're hanging in an area or working an edge. And then we're either going to drift through them with a mackerel and tight lines. You know, we're fighting some pretty good winds. There's like 10 to 15 mph south southeast and then we're also fighting the tide, too. So, we're kind of finding out it's a little bit better to drift on these fish rather than than try to spot lock cuz your mackerel has too much freedom to go wherever you want, up, down, or around. And these fish are definitely on the surface. They're only using 1 ft of water in 120 of it.
