9 Jobs Where Being Older Is Actually an Advantage

Watch on YouTube

Video summary

The video highlights nine specific careers where age is a distinct asset rather than a liability, challenging the common perception that younger workers are always preferred. The primary argument presented is that many industries value life experience, trust, and stability over raw energy or recent education. For instance, roles such as surveillance investigators rely on the ability to blend in unnoticed, a trait naturally associated with older individuals who can sit quietly for hours without drawing attention. Similarly, positions like reverse mortgage loan officers legally require borrowers to be at least 62 years old, meaning that older professionals are the only ones eligible to serve these clients. In this context, a seasoned worker's maturity and relatability build essential trust with elderly homeowners, whereas a young person might seem untrustworthy or disconnected from the realities of retirement planning. Another major category discussed involves teaching and instructing trades where experience is the primary credential. Jobs such as trade instructors for welding or HVAC systems in high schools often mandate five years of full-time work experience rather than a college degree, effectively disqualifying recent graduates while welcoming those with decades of industry knowledge. This extends to newborn care specialists and senior living advisers, where families and distressed relatives seek guidance from people who have already navigated similar life stages. A night nanny with three children or an adviser who has personally moved a parent into memory care offers a level of empathy and practical wisdom that cannot be taught in a classroom. These roles demonstrate that the "catch" for these professions is not academic certification but rather the accumulation of real-world hours, which naturally favors older applicants. The video also explores how experience translates directly into higher earning potential and career longevity in fields like insurance claims adjustment and handyman services for seniors. Insurance companies specifically seek adjusters who own homes and understand property damage from a homeowner's perspective, trusting an older professional to assess hail storm damage with credibility that a young novice lacks. Likewise, senior-focused handyman services prioritize technicians with ten or more years of experience to ensure safety and reliability for elderly clients who wish to age in place. The transcript emphasizes that while entry-level pay might be modest, the trajectory for experienced workers is steep, with opportunities to earn six figures during storm seasons or by building a reputation for trustworthiness. Ultimately, the conclusion is that the modern economy increasingly rewards those who can leverage their existing skills and life history to solve problems for others, turning past experience into a sustainable source of income without necessarily requiring traditional degrees.

All right, guys. So, today I've got nine jobs where being older is actually an advantage for you. Meaning, if you are on the older side, they actually prefer to hire people and you'll have an advantage if you're older, which is pretty rare for jobs because let's be honest, a lot of jobs out there are biased against older people, right? Because we all know that agism is actually thing. So, if you appreciate me making this type of video and you want to see me make more of them in the future, then let me know by gently cheersing that like button. Let's jump into it right now. Okay, so let's start with one that surprised me when I was doing research for this video, and that is surveillance investigator. So, here's the job. Somebody files an injury claim. For instance, my back is ruined and I can't work. The insurance company hires an investigator to sit in a car outside the guy's house and film him carrying a kayak. That's it. You sit, you watch, and you don't get noticed. Now, think about who gets noticed. A 25-year-old sitting in a parked car for 6 hours gets a knock on the window. a 58-year-old in a Camry with a coffee. Nobody's going to look twice. And in most jobs, being invisible is a problem. But in this one, it's the job. And they're hiring right now. So, Photofax is a private detective agency with private investigator openings in over 20 cities. So, here's the WASHA, Wisconsin posting, $22 to $27 an hour, company car, and read this line. No previous experience is necessary. We provide all training and licensing. Frasco, a 60-year-old company, has the same job open in over 30 cities, and it's $ 20 to $30 an hour with paid training, and they pay you for the drive there. Now, you might be thinking, "Shane, I don't have a police background. I can't do this." You don't need one. The government says a typical education for this job is a high school diploma. The company trains you, and a PI who's done it for 20 years says you do not need 2 4 6 8 or more years of education to become a PI. Unlike many professions out there, you do not need two, four, six, eight, or more years of education to become a PI. >> Now, when it comes to the steps to start, if you're interested in this one, I'm going to put them on the screen. With that being said, I also have some resources that we made for you. So, these are going to be prompts as well as AIS. They're all completely free and those are going to be down in the description in the pin comment below. Should be the third link down there. If you're interested in any one of these, what I recommend doing is taking that screenshot and using our AIS below and it'll basically personalize the information for you. Right? So, for instance, there's different laws and different regulations in different states for a lot of the different careers that we're going to go over in these videos, and it'll tell you exactly what to do based on your situation and where you live. Now, when it comes to the pay, the government's median for private investigators is $51,220 a year. And these entry postings are $ 20 to $30 an hour, and it goes up once you've got a book of cases. Now, you can start off just by working for an agency, and then you can go off on your own and do private investigating as a freelancer. And doing that, you can make even more money. Now, by the way, it's not always just insurance companies. Um, it can be somebody, you know, spying on their significant other because they think that they are not faithful to them. It could be corporate private investigating for companies that are interested in maybe buying a corporate stock, etc., etc. Time out. Time out, guys. If you ever thought, I should be on YouTube, but I never started because of the time or the editing or not knowing what to say or not knowing how to get started, AI just solved all of those problems for you. because you can now make money from YouTube working less than 4 hours a week. 15 to 30 minutes a day is all you need. And this works even if you have a full-time job, you run a business, you're already doing YouTube and you failed at it, or you're doing YouTube and you're doing pretty well, but you're struggling with monetization, or you're just a normal person who isn't techy at all. Which is exactly why this week I'm hosting a live training on exactly how to start YouTube step by step for beginners. It is 100% free, no cash at all. And on top of that, I'm going to be handing out even more bonuses at the training. Now, just to give you one example, you'll be getting my niche validator pro that's powered by Claude and we have a chat GBT version as well. And this is a super valuable piece of software where you can finally figure out what the best niche for you is. Or if you already have a niche, it's going to help you make it 10 times better. So, do not sleep on this one. Go and grab your spot down in the description and the pin comment below because the only way to get it is by joining the training. So, if you wait, you might miss out. Now, with that said, at the workshop, you will get to meet me personally. I will be answering questions before, during, and after the workshop directly. So, I'm looking forward to seeing you there. So, go click that link in the description and the pin comment below. It's happening this week. So, get it on your calendar. And if for some reason you can't make it or you weren't able to be there, still go click that link in the description because it will automatically put you on a wait list to notify you when we'll be running our next live training and you will be the first one to hear about it. So, yeah, looking forward to seeing you there. And now back to our regularly scheduled programming. All right, the next one, and this is the one that I would personally pick because it's the one that I actually did, which is to teach what you already know. So, as you guys know, I started as a pharmacist and I paid $300,000 to get a doctorate to become a pharmacist just to find out that I was really burned out in the job. I was working really long shifts during the pandemic and I really didn't like dealing with the US healthcare system as well. So, I made the career channel that I wish I had when I was trying to figure out what career to go into. Life gave me lemons and I turned it into lemonade and I helped other people not make the same mistakes that I made and I've now helped well over a thousand documented people get their dream job. So, here's the job. Whatever you already have experience with, right? Maybe it's the career that you did for 30 years or something that you got really good at as a kid or problems that you've had during your life that you've had to overcome, somebody younger is trying to learn that right now. So, for instance, nursing school, the electrician's exam, getting a toddler to sleep. You teach it as a tutor, a coach. You could start a paid group or you could just do service work. So why isn't the tutoring site says choose your own hourly rate? Tutors are not required to be certified teachers and their top tutors have earned 50,000 plus a year. Care.com says test prep tutors start at $100 an hour. And out school takes teachers with no credentials. And school lets you run a paid group for $9 a month. Now here's the catch. Every one of those needs one thing, which is people. A tutor with no students makes zero. A coach with no clients makes zero. And every one of those sites is a store with no customers until you bring your own. And there's exactly one place I know of that pays you for the traffic and lets you send those people to your tutoring, your coaching, your group, which is YouTube. You get paid for the traffic. Then you get paid again by the people that the traffic sends you. And that's exactly what I did. I was a pharmacist with $300,000 in student loan debt. I started explaining what I knew on camera and the videos paid me. Then the people watching paid me to teach them more. And I started just by teaching people to get into their dream career. I helped well over a thousand people with documented testimonials get into their career and probably a lot more people on top of that. Then I noticed that there was a massive gap in the education system and I was helping people get jobs in 7 days, 10 days, 12 days. And I noticed that there was a massive gap in the education system where there were tons of jobs out there where people think that they have to get college degrees when in reality they could just get into the job without one. And so I started teaching other people how to make these same types of channels where they would just help people get into careers or just help people get the right education to get into a career or help people learn the skills necessary for the career or even help people with software. Right? So for instance, Steven teaches this very niche type of CAD software that only certain types of engineers use and within a few months of starting he made $12,000 teaching this software. Josh, who I mentioned before, got all the way to $180,000 a month teaching cyber security and IT. Nicole teaches women how to get into a career called governance, risk, and compliance, which you probably never heard about, and it's a very boring career, but it pays really well. And she made it to $80,000 in a single month. Dr. Clifford Stewie teaches people how to graduate from college faster, and he made it to multiple six figures a year. Alex Shep teaches people how to graduate from online college and he made it to $15,000 a month. And nurse Jen, who I mentioned before, literally just teaches the knowledge that she knew working as a nurse to patients who needed to know it. And like I said, it's not just careers. Isaiah, for instance, is a vocal coach. He came out of a sales job, not a music career. And he'd spent years on courses that went nowhere. But then he attended my live training. Click the first link in the description, the pin comment below, and he made it to nearly $30,000 in a single month with my free live training. And he was able to quit his sales job and now he's doing his passion and making a full-time income from it. Guy suffered from what's called tenitus, which is constant ringing in the ears. And he made a channel to help other people who also suffer from tenitus. And his goal is just to make one or 2,000 extra dollars a month because that would really improve his quality of life in his semi-retirement. and he was able to get to that goal with less than 500 subscribers. And the reason they're all able to do this is because they're helping other people solve their problems. And they made what's known as a hybrid personal brand, which is a type of YouTube channel that I created where you can make a full-time income without having to get that many views. So again, if you want to learn exactly how to do that and learn exactly how you can pick your niche, go ahead and click that first link in the description in the pin comment below. And I look forward to seeing you at the live training this week. And that brings us to the next one on the list, which is a trade instructor. So, this is where you could be teaching welding, HVAC, electrical, or auto at a high school or community college. And this is where your age is actually written into the law. For instance, Texas, chapter 233 of their educational rules. To teach a trade in a Texas high school, one approved route is a high school diploma plus, in their words, 5 years of full-time wage earning experience. In that trade, there's no college degree required. The credential is the years. And a 24year-old can't have it, but you've got 30. And the schools are short. 33 states reported shortages of these types of teachers and twothirds of the ones teaching came straight out of the industry. And here's a live one. Riverside County, California, welding instructor at a high school posted September 8th. 3 years of work experience required. High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor's degree desired, but not required. So, the pay without a bachelor's is $59,000 to $86,000 a year. But you might be thinking, Shane, I'm a mechanic, not a teacher. Well, you've been teaching every apprentice that they ever handed to you. The school just pays you for it. Which brings me back to my brother Zach. He's 50, almost 30 years in the trades. On a family vacation, he pulled me aside and he asked me how he could keep making money without wrecking his body. And he thought I'd say, "Get a desk job." But I said, "Teach it on YouTube. Film what you already teach every apprentice." And he gave me every excuse in the book. But he listened to me and he did it anyway. His first video got over 800,000 views. 29 days after posting that first video, he made $214 in a single day. That's a $78,000 a year run rate. So he went from zero to a full-time income in less than one month. and then he finished off his first year at $18,000 a month. Now, I'm going to be doing a live training this week where I'm going to tell you exactly how he did it and I'll be giving you updates on exactly how he's doing right now. This is a one-time live training. There's also limited seats. So, click that first link in the description in the pen comment below. And I look forward to seeing you there. I'll be answering questions before, during, and after, and we'll be giving away a special AI tool that helps you pick your niche. Or if you already have a niche, it'll help you make it 10 times better. And this is useful whether you want to use your YouTube channel to build your personal brand to get a better job or if you want to use it to just make money on your own because this is the new economy where you don't necessarily have to get a job to make money, right? This is the career 2.0 economy and I'm going to teach you exactly how to make money just teaching what you already know in this week's live training. So, click that first link in the description in the pin comment below. It's completely free and I look forward to seeing you there. All right. Next is a reverse mortgage loan officer. So, this is the only loan in America where law won't let anyone under 62 sign. So, a reverse mortgage is simple. You're older. You own your house, and you pull money out of it. You pay it back when you leave the house. And the federal rule, word for word, is the youngest borrower shall be 62 years of age or older. So, the customer is never 30. The customer is 65, 72, 80 at a kitchen table deciding what to do with the biggest thing they own. So, who does a 74-year-old widow trust across that table? A 22-year-old with an iPad or somebody who's thought about their own retirement? Obviously, it's the second one, and companies know it. Mutual of Omaha Mortgage is running a training program for brand new reverse mortgage loan officers right now, for instance. And the same posting is up in over 40 cities. Here's the one in Villages, Florida. And their words, "Don't have your NMLS license? No problem. We'll help you obtain and pay for your NMLS license." So, you know, when they're helping you get licensed, that means that they are down bad and they desperately need people to help them. Now, you also get a monthly base during the 12-month training program. and established loan officers in our program routinely earn 100,000 plus says right there on the posting. Now, another one of their postings says it straight, college degree preferred but not mandatory. Now, you might be thinking, "Well, Shane, reverse mortgages are a scam." Some of them were BS, and that's exactly why older loan officers win. Now, the government made the product boring on purpose. Every borrower has to sit through counseling with a government approved counselor before they sign. So, there's nothing left to sell except trust, and a 70-year-old is not going to buy trust from a 22-year-old. So, the license is federal law and it's short. 20 hours of class, a national test that you pass at 75%, a background check, not one word about the degree. And the industry knows who sells this. In 2016, the company with the most famous reverse mortgage commercials in America needed a new face. And they hired a 71-year-old with a mustache, Tom Celich, a man who could be the customer and definitely relates to the customer. And that's you at a kitchen table instead of on TV. So, again, steps to starter on the screen. And for the pay, the government's median for loan officers is $76,000 a year. It's mostly commission, and the training program gives you a base the first year. All right. Next one is going to be a newborn care specialist. Basically, a night nanny. So, here's the job. A couple brings home their first baby. They haven't slept in 9 days. They hire somebody to come in from 10:00 at night to 6:00 in the morning, take the baby, and let them sleep. That's it. Now, who do two terrified 31year-olds hand a 9-day old baby to at 10 p.m.? Not a 20-year-old with a certificate. a woman who's raised three on her own. So, Care.com says that night nannies charge $30 an hour when they're new, up to $65 an hour with experience. And here's a posting from an agency on Long Island. And this is posted on September 4th. $45 to $50 plus an hour overnight. And the requirement is 5 plus years of professional newborn experience. Another one in New York posted September 12th is $45 an hour for an 8 hour overnight minimum five years of experience. Five years. Remember, experience is the requirement, not the degree. Now, you might be thinking, Shane, don't I need a license to do this? No. The main training company says in their own FAQ, there are currently no regulations within the US to work as an NCS. A certification helps, and the course is about $1,000, but the thing that families pay for is that you've done it, right? And the top of this field is a woman named Nanny Connie. Over 40 years of experience, and her clients are Hollywood families, and she's been on Good Morning America and the Today Show. And nobody hired her for energy. They hired her because she's done it a thousand times. So steps to start are on the screen as always and the pay is $30 to $65 an hour and the agency postings sit at $45 to $50 an hour. All right, so next one is going to be a senior living adviser. So here's the job. A daughter calls. Her mom is 84, fell twice this month, and can't live alone anymore. The daughter is crying. The adviser on the phone helps her figure out what kind of care mom needs and which places have a room. The family pays nothing. The care home pays the adviser's company. So, the biggest company doing this is a place for mom. Their careers page says that they help over 300,000 families a year. So, here's a live posting. Inbound sales representative, that's what they call the adviser job, remote, posted August 31st. The base is 45,000. On target earnings is $74,000. And the requirement here is 2 years of sales or call center experience. No degree on the list. And the senior version pays $86,500 on target. Now, think about who's on that call. A 55-year-old who's already moved her own mother into memory care can say, "I've been where you're at and mean it." A 24 year old can't. They can't teach that in four weeks of training. And the government says somebody turning 65 today has almost a 70% chance of needing long-term care. And this is exactly what one of our community members does on camera instead of on the phone. Jyn, she's 60. She spent 33 years as a nurse and she'd never made a video in her life. and she started making videos for people her own age about the health care system that she'd spent 33 years inside of. And the health care system in the United States is a bit of a mess. So, people do need a lot of help with it. And within a few months, that channel was monetized, making a full-time income, then $10,000 a month. Plus, she's getting sponsorships and affiliate deals. And she quit her nursing job and she's now traveling all over the United States in her camper van. So, her biggest video is called Six Hygiene Mistakes After 70 that nurses notice immediately and it has well over 800,000 views. And it's the same trust that a place for mom is paying for. Jyn just reaches more people at once. And she does it teaching stuff that's common sense to her. And so this is a recurring theme. You basically learn the job or you just use the experience that you already have either in a job or other things that you've gotten good at in your life and then you just teach it on YouTube. And I've seen this work for literally thousands of people in my community at this point. So whether you want to grow on YouTube just to establish your personal brand so that you can get better career opportunities, that's something that a lot of people do. For instance, Josh started making really helpful videos in the cyber security and IT niche, and he started literally getting job offers from Fortune50 companies and fang companies, which some of those are harder to get into than Harvard or Yale. But then the channel just kept growing. It started making 5,000 a month, then 10,000 a month, then 30,000 a month, all the way up to $180,000 in a single month. So, at that point, he quit his dream job offer that he got from a Fortune50 company, and he went full-time in his business. Now, Josh is years into his YouTube journey, but nurse Jen is only a few months, and Jen is still making a full-time income, and she started from complete scratch. And if you want to know exactly how she did that, then go ahead and click the first link in the description in the pen comment below to attend my live training this week, where we will be teaching you exactly how she did it, introducing you to Jyn and Zach, teaching you how you can pick your niche, and teaching you step by step how you can do it yourself. Remember, this is the new economy. You don't have to get a traditional job anymore. You can make your own job and you can get paid to share your knowledge with people that are a little bit further back on the path. All right, the next one is going to be OSHA outreach trainer. So, here's the job. Every construction worker in America has to sit through a safety class. The OSHA 10-hour, the OSHA 30 hour, etc., etc. And somebody has to teach it. And the trainer is not an OSHA employee. It's a person with a card who charges what they want. And OSHA's own rules is to become an authorized trainer, you must have 5 years of construction safety experience. And a lot of the time when they say experience, they really just mean someone who's worked for a while. So a college degree only counts for two of those years. And they say it in writing. OSHA does not issue waiverss. Now you might be thinking, "Well, Shane, I've worked safely for 30 years. Does that count?" Well, here's what OSHA says. Working safely in the industry does not meet the requirement. The 5 years have to be safety work. But it's a little bit blurry what this actually means. So for instance, you could be the person who helps with safety, right? If you've ever done that, you might have the experience. for instance, the safety guy on the crew or the foreman or the manager, anybody that was responsible for other people's safety. So, just as an example, I used to work as a pharmacist and occasionally I would have to check different safety related stuff. It was [snorts] something that I'd have to do on a monthly or quarterly basis and that counts as safety work. So, if that's you, you're already qualified. And the path is short. Take the OSHA 510 class, then the OSHA 500 trainer class, and Georgia Tech runs the 500 for $965. Then you're authorized for 4 years. Now, of course, this can be a little bit different in different states. Some places are going to be a bit more strict on their requirements, and that's why I recommend downloading the resources below so you can check to see what it's going to be like in your area. But let's talk about who's hiring. Henry Ford College in Michigan pays its OSHA instructor $53 to $58 an hour, and they'll take a journeyman's card instead of a degree. Capefir Community College in North Carolina wants a high school diploma and 5 years of experience in general industry. Right? That's the ad, a high school diploma and 5 years of experience in safety. So again, steps are on the screen. This pays $53 to $58 an hour at the college. And on your own, OSHA says trainers are independent service providers whose fees may vary. So you basically set the price per class. All right. Next is an insurance claims adjuster. So here's the job. A hail storm rips through Dallas. 10,000 roofs have damage. The insurance company needs someone to stand in the driveway, look at the roof, talk to the homeowner, and write up the check. That's the adjuster. Now, picture the homeowner. Her roof is gone. Who does she want in her driveway? Well, nobody wants a 23-year-old with a tablet telling them that their house is screwed. She wants somebody who's owned a house, fixed a house, and can look her in the eye. So, the license is easy. Their website says, "Take an exam or skip the exam if you completed a TDI approved course." The course is about 40 hours. The application fee is $50. There's no degree anywhere on the page, and after a hurricane, Texas hands out a 90-day emergency license with no exam. Sedwick, a big claims company, has a training class starting October 12th. High school diploma or GED is all that's required and it's $25.65 an hour to start and they train you for four weeks. And the big money is Stormwork. A training company says catastrophe adjusters average over $400 per claim. So if you close two to three a day, you should earn well in excess of $100,000 a year. That's their number, not the government's. The government's median salary says that it's about $78,000 a year. So the earnings will vary depending on where you live and other factors. And it's pretty seasonal. When there's no storm or no catastrophe, there's no work. So, the same company says many adjusters start in their 50s, 60s, or even 70s. So, it's perfect for this video. Now, you might be thinking, Shane, I don't know anything about insurance. Neither does anybody in that training class. What you know is houses and people. They can't teach that. Now, the government's median is $78,000 a year. Trainees start around $25 an hour, and storm adjusters specifically can clear six figures in a busy year. But, there's a lot of other types of adjusters out there as well. So, there's a secret side of my business that most of you have no idea exists. And I actually have a coaching program on personal branding and growing on YouTube and making money on YouTube. This is good for complete beginners, maybe even people who just want to get a job by growing their personal brand, as well as business owners all the way up to people who are very advanced on YouTube. And they get to work directly with myself and my team to help them reach their goals. Now, we are opening up three to five spots. And this is pretty rare. We usually don't have these open. We usually only limit them to a select amount of people as well, but we're opening up three to five spots. And you can check those down in the description and the pinned comment below. And in this program, you will get to work directly with myself and other people who are highly successful on YouTube. Everyone in our program has 100k plus subscriber plaques. Just as an example, Shawn was able to go all the way from being stuck, not making very much money on his channel to making over $500,000 in a single month. Now, that's an example of one of my more advanced students, but there are lots of examples of people starting out from scratch, and they got to 5K a month or 10K a month, etc. So check that out down in the description and the pin comment below and I look forward to working with you and see if we're a good fit to work together. All right, next one is going to be Handyman for seniors specifically. So there's a company called True Blue and there's over 110 locations and their homepage says it right out. We love working with seniors. It's the heart of our organization and the work is grabbars, handrails, ramps, basically these small repairs that let an 80-year-old stay in her own house. And who does the 80-year-old want in her house? Well, not a 22-year-old that she's never met, that's for sure. She'd much rather have somebody who's fixed things for over 30 years and talks to her like a person, right? Somebody that she can relate to. So, here's a True Blue posting in Phoenix. The job is called Lead Home Service Technician. And the posting says that it's modifications that help seniors age in place. And it's $35 to $38 an hour. And the requirement is 10 plus years of professional experience. 10 years. So, a kid out of trade school can't apply, but you can. And it seems like it was just general professional experience. So, they just want somebody who's done jobs. Now, AAP asked people over 50 where they want to live as they get older. 75% said, "Right here in my own house." So, that is tens of millions of houses that need a ramp, a grab bar, a handrail, and somebody that they trust to put it in. Now, you might be thinking, "Shane, I'm not a contractor." You don't need to be. These are small jobs. A grab bar is an hour, a ramp is a Saturday, and you just need tools, a truck, and a background check. And you're probably just going to be doing the same things over and over again. So, yes, there is a tiny learning curve at first, but after you've done it a few times, it's going to be like second nature. Now, on your own, Thumbtax says that the average handyman charges $60 to $75 an hour. Now, the steps to get started again are posted on the screen. You can screenshot that, copy and paste it, put it into the AI, or just follow those steps as well. With that being said, I know 99% of you are just going to enjoy my free content on YouTube, get a ton of value out of it. I get comments all the time from people who have gotten jobs or people that have gotten results just from my free content. Also enjoy the free resources that we spend hundreds of hours making for you. You're going to get a ton of value out of those and you're going to attend my live training. Definitely attend that and you're going to get a ton of value out of the live training and we are never going to end up working together and that is completely fine. My goal is to give 10 or even 100 times more value than what I receive. And all I ask in return is that you just let me know whenever you get results or whenever you're able to land a job because it makes my day every single time. And you can click this video right here to check that out.
