#6 - Prayer Still Works - Pr. William Lee | August 10, 2026

God is good. And all the time God is good. Amen. Amen. I want to invite your attention today to the New Testament Gospel of Luke once again. And as we turn there today, I'm going to ask if you would join me in a word of prayer as we hear the word of God today. Let's pray together together. Father in heaven, God, we are so so thankful that your word is a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path. God, I pray now that you would indeed think through my mind and God that you will speak through my vocal cords. God, give me power to declare your holy word and your truth. And may those who hear, oh God, align themselves with your will and your way. For we ask it in Jesus' name. Amen. And amen. Now, I'm going to ask again if [clears throat] you would take your Bible, excuse me, and go with me to Luke chapter number 18. Luke chapter 18 and beginning at verse number one. Luke chapter 18 and beginning at verse number one. Here's what the word of the Lord says. Say Luke chapter 18 and beginning at verse number one. The Bible says, "And he spoke a parable unto them to this end, that men ought to always pray and not to faint." Verse two says, "Saying, there was a judge in there was in a city a judge which feared not God neither regarded men." Verse three, "And there was a widow in that city and she came unto him saying, 'Avenge me of mine adversary.'" "And when he would not for a while, afterward he said within himself, "Though I fear not God nor regard man, and yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her lest by her continual coming she weary me." And the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge saith." "And shall not God avenge his own elect, which cry out day and night unto him? Though he bear long with them." Verse 8, "I tell you that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?" Who says amen? I am a firm believer that our God is a prayer-hearing and a prayer-answering God. I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that when we pray, God bends his ear from heaven, and God hears the prayers of his children. I don't believe that prayer is just another activity that we do. I believe that when we call upon the name of God, that God is able to do for us what nobody else can do. There is power in prayer. I am a benefactor of prayer. I am a recipient of the divine benefits that God has given us as it relates to prayer. And as only do this morning, I want to challenge our faith today because I believe that God in this encampment wants to do something miraculous in every last one of our lives. Who says amen? Do you believe God today? I believe that God wants to do something miraculous in this encampment. And I believe everybody that it happens as we come to God in prayer. Let me say this thing, I believe that prayer still works. Come on, say amen. Prayer works because God works every step of the way. There is a quote from uh Review and Herald, October 7th, 1865, where the author says, she says, "Prayer is the answer to every problem in life. It puts us in tune with divine wisdom, which knows how to adjust everything perfectly. So often, we do not pray in certain situations because from our standpoint, the outlook is hopeless. But nothing is impossible with God. Nothing is so entangled that it cannot be remedied. No human relation is too strained from God to bring about reconciliation and understanding. No habit is so deep-rooted that it cannot be overcome. No one is so weak that he cannot be made strong. No one is so ill that he cannot be healed. No mind is so dull that it cannot be made brilliant. I love this. Whatever we need, if we trust God, he will supply it. If anything is causing worry or anxiety, let us stop rehearsing the difficulty and trust God for healing, for love, and power. Who says amen today? Oh, I love this. When I was a child, I came across this quote. And from that day to today, I believe y'all that there is nothing impossible with God. I believe that when the children of God come together and pray, that heaven begins to move. That when the children of God seek the face of God, that God begins to move in such a powerful way. In Luke chapter 18 and verse 1, this is so interesting because we have here the thesis of this parable from the very beginning of scripture. In Luke 18:1, we have the main point of this parable. Jesus tells us in Luke 18:1, he says that men ought to always pray and not to faint. You see, in our text today, Jesus is encouraging us as the body of believers that we ought to pray, persevere in prayer, have faith under pressure, and then waiting on God in an unjust world. How many of you all believe today that there is power in prayer? Let me see your hands right now. I believe everybody that the very things that we're praying about, that God can do more than we ever imagined if we submit our wills to him. Now, here is the challenge though, because when we are praying, there are times in our lives where we have to simply wait on God. Where we cannot do anything at all, but we have to wait on God to move. And let me tell you, sometimes it may take uh uh 6 months or a year. Sometimes it may take a long time, but the Bible says they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. They shall mount up with wings as eagles. They shall run and not be weary. They shall walk and not faint. Sometimes, we have to wait and trust that God sees exactly what we need and he will bring it at just the right time. There is a quote that says, "If God makes you wait, it's because what he's preparing is worth the patience." I love that. In Luke 18 and verse 1, the Bible tells us that there is a widow in a particular city. In the ancient biblical world, a widow was often the most challenged individual. She was challenged economically, socially. She was vulnerable in society. And without a husband, she could lose her primary source of financial provision, social standing, legal advocacy, and physical protection. A widow in biblical society was the individual who was thought to be literally without any help at all. Well, Jesus today tells us this story, this parable, about this widow because this widow is persistent in everything that she does. In Luke 18 and verse 2, the Bible says that there was in a city, maybe it was Nairobi. Maybe it was another city, but the Bible says there was a judge in that city. This judge did not fear God at all. Anybody ever know a judge like that? Come on, look at me somebody. Anybody ever know Look, a judge that does not fear God, a judge that is wicked in all that he does. Well, the Bible says there was a judge, he feared not God, neither did he regard man. The judge lacked vertical accountability. He did not fear God, and the Bible says that he lacks horizontal compassion. That is, he has no respect for people. This judge that Jesus says, he is a corrupt judge. He is immoral. He is a downright scoundrel in the word of God. And the Bible says that because this judge is so wicked, the Bible says that there was in verse three a widow in that city. And she came unto him saying, "Avenge me of my adversary." Now, what's interesting everybody is that the word there, adversary, is almost like we see in Revelation chapter 12 as well. Because how many of y'all know that we have an adversary called the devil? And the adversary called the devil is always coming against you and I. Well, she says in the text, "Avenge me of my adversary." In other words, this judge, she looks at him and says that because he is wicked, because he is not doing anything for anybody else. Maybe she has lost some money. Maybe she has some land that she is trying to gain. But she has nothing in her hands at all, but the one thing that this widow has is her persistence. She believes that the judge can do for her what nobody else can do. So, this widow has persistence, and hear me, she also has faith. You see, faith is the substance of things hoped for. It is the evidence of things not seen. There are times in your life when you're praying for God for move in a certain situation. Maybe you're saying, "God, bless my financial situation." Maybe you're praying for your family that God would do something amazing for your family. Maybe you're praying that God would save a lost loved one. Any parent ever prayed that prayer before? God, save my children. Well, this judge of this widow in our text, she has faith. She has dogged faith. She believes that that somehow if she keeps on praying, if she keeps on asking, that this judge would do something for her. Well, in verse three, the Bible says again, and there was a widow in that city, she came unto him, and she says, "Avenge me of my adversary." Now, what's interesting, if you look at it in the Greek manuscript, that word for this is it comes it is in the imperfect tense. And the imperfect tense literally means that she did not go to the judge just one time. In other words, she kept on going to the judge every single day. Day after day, moment after moment, this widow goes to the judge and says, "Listen, judge, avenge me of my adversary." If the judge went to a lunch break, the widow followed him in the lunch break. If the the judge was holding court, the widow was there every single day because she believed that if she kept on being persistent, that somehow the judge would hear her plea. I love this quote from Ellen White in Steps to Christ. Ellen White says this, she says, "Keep your wants, your joys, your sorrows, and your cares, and your fears before God." Listen, church. She says, "You cannot burden him. You cannot weary him. He who numbers the hairs on your head is not indifferent to the wants of his children." Who says amen, somebody? Again, she says, "Keep your wants, keep your joys, your sorrows, your cares before God." God knows everything about us. He knows our secret prayers. He knows what we desire. He knows the the burdens on our hearts. And God is saying, "Listen, church, we have not because we ask not. We have not because sometimes we ask amiss." But God is saying, "I am such a God that when you pray, he will bend his ear from heaven, and God will do more than we ever could imagine." She goes on to say that nothing that in any way concerns our peace is too small for him to notice. There is no chapter in our experience too dark for him to read. There is no perplexity too difficult for him to unravel. No calamity can befall on the least of his children. No anxiety harass the soul. No joy, no cheer, no sincere prayer that escapes the lips of which our heavenly Father is unobservant or in which he takes no immediate interest. Our problem though is that sometimes we are not desperate enough for a mighty move of God. Oftentimes only when we become desperate for a breakthrough that we see the glory of God. When I was a child, I prayed some prayers as a child that I'll never forget to this day. There was where we have this big youth gathering of youth congress back in the day and I don't know how old I was. I was just a small little boy and I'll never forget we didn't have the money to send me to youth congress. And I really wanted to go. All of my young people are going to be there. There're going to be young people all across the the United States that were coming to youth congress for this major youth event. I remember as a child going to my room and bowing my head and saying, "Lord, please God, if you're real. God, if you're able, please make a way for I be able to go to youth congress." And I remember that that finished praying that prayer. It was not shortly after even that same day that the pastor of my church called and said, "I am no longer able to go to youth congress." And he asked my parents, "Does your son want to take my ticket and go TO YOUTH CONGRESS?" OH, CHURCH, I WAS SO AMAZED AS a little boy. I was like, "Wow, the little prayer that I prayed, God heard that prayer." And from that day to this day, I totally believe that when you call upon the name of God, that God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly above that we could ever imagine. He's a prayer hearing and a prayer answering God. Church, sometimes you need to become desperate in your prayers. You need to say, "God, I need you. God, would you please move in this way?" I've prayed prayers that you can never imagine. I've prayed prayers that sometimes I didn't even believe that God could do all that I prayed in my prayer, but yet God has done amazing because when the people of God pray, God begins to move. Who says amen? Her request is "Avenge me of my adversary." Now, again, that that Greek word behind avenge means to to really give somebody a black eye, opposing exploiting wrongdoing against another. She is literally saying, "Judge, move. God, judge, move out of the way because I have a case that I'm praying about right now." This widow is not asking for revenge. She's simply asking for justice. "Would you grant me justice against the situation that I'm facing right now?" This is not a cry for revenge. No, this is a cry for righteousness. She's saying, "Please give me righteousness right now." She's not asking to win. She's absolutely asking to be treated right. Ah, but the Bible says there is a wicked judge. This judge does not care about man. He does not fear God at all. He's only concerned about himself. He probably even takes bribes from other individuals in the city. Whoever can grease his pocket, whoever can do something for him, that's he'll do something for. But the Bible tells us in verse 4 that this widow, hear me today, that she would not give up. That that she would The The Bible says verse 4, "And he would not for a while." But the Bible says, "But afterward, he said within himself." Here's what he says. "Though I fear not God nor regard man, yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest by her continual coming she weary me." I can see her in my eyes right now. Every single day she shows up to the courtroom. And I I told you that I don't read the Bible like most people read the Bible. I see it in pictures. I've jumped into the text. I swam around the text. And I believe, everybody, don't don't get upset, but I believe that this must be an African sister in the Bible. You didn't say amen right there. I'm going to say it for myself. Amen. I can see her right now. She comes determined. She has her hair flowing down, and now she begins to wrap it up. Takes a bobby pin, and she pins it up. She looks around with intention now, and she says, "I'm not going to let it go until I get what I need from the judge." Let me tell you somebody, prayer is us coming to God and believing that the God of the universe is able to do for us what nobody else can do. It's not just coming to God once. And and and I know that in the church we've been taught so often that only pray once and then leave it to God. Can I tell you that is not biblical theology? Because in biblical theology, the Bible says that Paul prayed three times that the thorn in his flesh might be removed. HE KEPT ON PRAYING, "GOD, REMOVE the thorn. Remove the thorn. Remove the thorn." But finally, he says, "Thy grace is sufficient." Even Jesus prayed three times when he was going to Calvary. "If there be any way, if there be any way, let this cup pass from me." You see, sometimes you have to pray, hear me, until the burden is released. There are children and I know what I'm talking about. There are children that we are praying for right now that think up is down and left is right. There are children that have walked away from the faith of God and the only way that God can bring our children back is if we begin to pray and ask God, "God, save my children." There are families who are under the attack of the enemy. And sometimes the only way that that chain can be broken is if we go to God and ask God, "God, would you break the generational curses that the enemy has tried to to upon my family?" The Bible says in Acts 12, you may remember the story in Acts 12, the Bible says that Peter was thrown in prison. But the Bible says while Peter was in prison, the church kept praying for Peter. And the more they prayed, the Bible says that God heard their prayer and God sent an angel and when Rhoda showed up at the door, they didn't even believe that God had heard their prayer, but God moves when we call upon his name. The Bible reminds us that faith is not proven by how fast God answers, but how long we trust when he does not answer. See, this parable that's that's short today, this parable is not our typical stories in the word of God. This is a contrast parable and not a comparison. The this is not the judge does not represent God, this judge is saying he's a comparison or contrast between evil and between goodness. Look at verse six, the Bible says and the Lord said, "Hear what the unjust judge says. And shall not God avenge his elect, which cry day and night unto him, though he bear long with them?" So in other words, the judge again, the Bible says, "Will not God avenge his own elect?" Here it is, when we cry day and night unto God. God bears long with us, but we have to learn how to call upon his name. Go with me right now a text you know well 2 Chronicles 7 verse 14. Go there right now. 2 Chronicles 7. You know the text quite well. Verse 14. The word of God says this 2 Chronicles 7 and verse 14. The Bible says this right here again 2 Chronicles chapter 7. And I want you to look now at verse 14. I want to do something powerful today. Here is what the word of God says 2 Chronicles 7 and verse 14. The Bible says this, if my people which are called by my name shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven. I will forgive their sins and God says, I will heal their land. Who says amen? The reality is God says, I will hear your prayers if you come to me and number one, humble yourself. Somebody say humble yourself. Humble yourself means to recognize that you have no power. That God has the power. That God has the strength. If we would humble ourselves and pray and here it is, and seek the face of God. I told you the story yesterday on how I went to the hospital and prayed for my deacon. But I can tell you story after story and hear me right now. Church you're looking at a miracle. I'm going to say it again. You are looking at America. When my mother was just 6 months old, my mother had a tragic accident at 6 months old. She was on a merry-go-round that that spins the kids around. Are you familiar with that? Right? She was on a merry-go-round and my aunt had placed her there on the merry-go-round. She tells the story all the time. As she was placed on the merry-go-round, she says that her aunt slowly began to twirl her around. And you know that little kid, she cannot hold on you know really tight. So, her she was trying to sit there and all of a sudden some kids showed up and said, "Can we take a turn?" and turned the little baby as well. So, when the kids showed up, she says that they turned it and twisted it and ran around as fast as they could and my mother fell off the merry-go-round. 6 months old and she tumbled and fell underneath the merry-go-round. For 6 at 6 months years old, for the next year, she was in a full body cast, unable to move. Broken limbs from the top of her from the the neck all the way down to her feet, bones in her body were broken. She literally almost lost her life as a 6-month-old baby. For the next year, she was in the hospital, people praying, asking God, "God, please save this baby. God, please bless them. Please, God, help them. And now she grew older, and now she had a struggle learning how to walk again. How to be able to take some steps, and and all through her life she's she had a little problem every now and then stumbling, but but thank God for his grace that she had began to walk and do well. Who says amen? But now, here's a challenge. Because she fell and broke most of her bones, she also broke her pelvis as well and other important bones. So, when she met my father, the doctor told her that because her bones never really healed properly, that she probably would never probably be able to have a baby. But my mother was like this woman in Luke chapter 18. She believed God and said that I believe that God is able to help me to have a baby. She says, "I began to pray, and I began to ask God, God, please." And though they struggled for a long time, in 1970, Rhode Island, a baby was born. Ah, but that baby was my older brother. And the doctors, hear me now, the doctors, Pastor McKenzie, said that my brother was a miracle. They said, "Wow, we we did not have think that that was going to be able to be happen." And I Let me say this again. I thank God for doctors, but I thank God that God is a sovereign God of this universe. And if God says, "You're going to have a baby," you're going to have a baby. If God says, "I'm going to bless you," God will bless you. In 19, I'll tell you 1975, a beautiful baby was born. Ah! But four years later, the doctors told my mother that was good, but don't try it again. My mother said, "Hold up now. One is good, but two is even better." So, on March 21st, on a Wednesday morning at 8:31 p.m., the most handsomest baby that had ever been born came out from my mother's womb. And they called his name William Geoffrey Lee. My father This This is they tell me my father looked at me and said, "There's something special about this baby." I can't tell you the power of prayer like I want to tell you. I can't tell you today, church, that that God knows every single thing that we stand in need of. And the Bible says that the promises of God are yay and amen. God knows what you stand in need of. He knows that he's able to do exceedingly abundantly. Hear me. Above all that we could think or even imagine. He's a prayer-hearing and a prayer-answering God. Can I give you another one? I'm a miracle, and that's why I get so excited about Jesus. Because I know that I could not, I may not have been here but for the prayers of the righteous. There's a song that says, I pray for you, you pray for me, and watch God change things. There's another song that says that that that when we pray, that God again, he begins to move in such a powerful way. So, here's what happened. My wife, that's joining me on this mission for camp meeting, when she became pregnant, uh was it the first baby or first baby bed rest? First baby bed rest? I'll never forget it. We were young parents at the time. We've been married now for 22 years. Come on, say amen. Amen. Someone said, "Pastor, you only look 20 years old." Praise God. 22 years, pastors. Our first child, uh we had our first child, and I'll never forget it. We had moved to a brand new area. And my my my wife now goes to a brand new doctor whom we've never met, but her first doctor's appointment, oh my goodness. The first doctor's appointment we went in, and they began to examine her on the table. She's there on the table, and the doctors are doing their thing, and the doctor looks at her, and the DOCTOR SAYS, "OH, NO." LET ME TELL you something. If you ever are in the doctor's office, and the doctor says, "Oh, no," that is not good news. They rush my wife immediately to have surgery, because what happened was the baby's head was already there, and she was what, about 4 months? 4 months pregnant at the time, and the baby's head was already there. The baby was about to come out. Hear me right now. Talking about the power of prayer. They rushed her to the hospital, stitched her up, and for the next 4 and 1/2 months, she would have to lie on her back in the hospital. Because you want to put pressure down because if the if she put pressure there, then the baby could come premature and we may even lose the baby. But can I tell you that she has a praying husband? She's a prayer warrior herself. COME ON, SOMEBODY. WE KNOW THAT GOD IS ABLE to do a more than we can ever imagine. And for the Hear me now. For the next 4 and 1/2 months, when I would go to the hospital, she would be there in her bed and she'll be looking up every single day. One day, I walked in and then God put it on my heart that she's looking up. And then Psalm 121 came into my eye to my mind. The Bible says, "I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills from which cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord." How many of y'all know that when you look up, you can look up to God and God gives us power? She was looking up every single day because sometimes when you cannot figure out what is going on in the world, you have to look up to God. And God will hear your prayers. After 8 and 8 and 1/2 months, right on time. The second handsomest baby came out. And we named him William Jeffrey Lee II. The second. You can't tell me that when we pray, God does not bend his ears down from heaven and begin to move. I'm preaching this sermon this morning because last night God told me that there are some people that are here today that you have things that you're praying about and some of you have been praying about them for a long time and you've not yet seen them come to pass. And I've come by this morning, on a Tuesday morning of camp meeting, to challenge your faith today. I want to challenge you to put on your mind right now the very thing that you have been praying about. I want you right now, like this widow woman in Luke chapter 18, to begin to ask God, "God, will you move in a mighty way?" I want you to look at this quote right now. "Prayer is not in order. It is the laying hold of God's promises and pleading them uh pleading them in faith saying, 'Do as thou hast said.'" She goes on to say Ellen White says this, this is so powerful everybody. She says, "It is through earnest prayer." What kind of prayer everybody? "Earnest prayer and diligent effort that we must obtain the victory. We must pray as earnestly as if the responsibility were all ours and work as faithfully as it all depended up on us." We've got to pray earnestly and diligently today. Well, my last couple of texts is Matthew 7:7 and 8. The Bible says these words, Matthew 7:7 and 8 Bible says ask and it shall be given you. Oh, that's powerful. Seek and you shall find. Knock and it shall be opened unto you. For everyone that asketh receiveth and he that seeketh findeth and to him that does what? Knocketh it shall be opened. There was a woman. I was watching it online and she was running in a race. And as she was running her race, she was literally leading the pack. But as she was running, she ended up tripping and she fell down and then the other runners began to step over her. Let me tell you right now, sometimes in our Christian walk, you may fall down. But here's the reality. What happened was when she fell down, she had a decision to make. Will I stay down or will I get back up and continue to run the race? What she did was she got back up and though even though she's in last place right now, she began to run and give it everything that she have because she understood that the race is not given to the swift or to the strong, but to the one that endureth unto the end and the more she gave, the more faster she became and the story has it, she came in first place and won the race. Why? Because she did not give up. Church, hear me right now. When it comes to God, and when it comes to prayer, God is saying, "Don't give up. Don't throw in the towel. God is able to do for us what nobody else can do. So, James 5:13-16 says, my last text, "If any among you is afflicted, let him pray. Is any merry, let him sing psalms. Is any sick among you, let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord, and the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up. And if he hath committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. Confess your faults one to another, and pray FOR ONE ANOTHER, THAT YOU may be healed. For the effectual fervent prayer of the righteous availeth much." Who says, "Amen?" Prayer changes everything. Prayer changes everything. Now, here's what I'm going to do right now, because I don't believe that we ought to preach a sermon about prayer, and not spend a few moments asking God to do what he really wants to do in our lives. Can I ask you right now? Anybody believe that God is able right now to do what you've been praying about? Let me see your hands. Do you believe God is able right now? Right now. Right now. He's able right now. I want to do something special today in this mid-service. I know it may not be your custom. It may not be something that you have been used to do, but hear me today right now. I believe that God is able. I believe everybody that that God is wanting to do more than we ever could have imagined. And what God has placed on my heart right now is that there are some families that you need God to do something amazing for your family. You need God right now to to bring back a son or daughter who has gone astray, and you're saying, "God, please save my children. Save my family." Maybe you today, like my mother, has gone through a a a a horrific accident, and you're saying, "God, would you please bless my body once again." I'm going to invite you >> [music] >> in the few moments that we have this midday service. Thank you, Jesus. God is saying if we surrender, if we yield unto God, God says right now that I'm going to show you my glory. I'm going to show you that I'm the God of Abraham, ISAAC, AND JACOB. GOD says to his children this morning that we must yield to him. Whatever you're holding on to, God is saying right now, I cannot bless your life while you're still holding on to your sins. While you're still holding on to bitterness and to anger AND TO RESENTMENT, GOD IS CALLING us right now, church, to let it go. Matter of fact, turn to somebody right now and say, "Neighbor, let it go." Come on, say, "Neighbor, let it go." Come on, say, "Let it go." Let go of this sin. Let go of whatever you've been holding on to that you know that God has been convicting you to let it go of. And church, I'm so serious today. Every sermon I preach, y'all, I believe that God is able. But God is saying, "Listen, we've got to get it straight with him. We've got to get IT RIGHT WITH GOD." He wants us for himself. And God is saying, "Listen, I can do more in one moment than you can do in [music] a lifetime." But he's asking us right now to let it go. Here's what I'll do right now. There are some individuals that need to surrender to [music] God. Before God can hear you, you've got to surrender. Before God can do anything else, God says, "I want you [music] for myself." I don't care who you are, and I don't care what you've done. The Bible says a righteous man falls down seven times, but gets back up again. The girl fell down, but she got back up again and began to finish the race. God is calling you to join me right now in believing [music] God for a miracle. I'm going to ask you right now if you [music] This is very specific right now. I know there's a whole lot of us today. But if you're standing right now in the need of a tremendous blessing from God. You've been praying about something for a while. I'm going to ask you to stand to your feet right now. Stand to your feet right now. I'm going to believe God right now that as you stand, that God's going to do something amazing in your life right now. Now, that's part one. Part two is this. There's a yielding [music] that God wants. Is I yield, I yield, [music] I yield to the power of the Holy Ghost. I don't want you to be afraid. I don't want you to lack or or to stay where you are. I want you right now to join me. Mother, are you praying for your child? [music] Daddy, are you praying for your family? Businessmen, are you praying that God will bless your business? Entrepreneur, are you praying that God will do something amazing right now? Elder, are you praying for your church? Trying to hear God in the best [music] way I can right now, but I want to invite somebody right now.
