Video summary

The Poultry Pioneers program stands as a groundbreaking initiative within the 4-H movement, offering young enthusiasts with a passion for poultry and science a unique platform to explore real-world applications. This program is designed to equip small flock owners with the scientific knowledge necessary to make informed decisions about their flocks, particularly when selecting chicken breeds. Participants engage in hands-on research that goes beyond basic observation, diving into the specific characteristics of eggs such as shell strength, weight, and thickness. These detailed measurements are not merely academic exercises; they directly influence practical outcomes, such as determining how different egg varieties affect the texture and color of products like mayonnaise. The participants were divided into groups to explore different facets of egg science, with some focusing on standard quality parameters while others delved deeper into food science and functionality. The project began in late 2015 with training sessions on data analysis tools like PowerPoint and Excel, followed by intensive research periods where teams spent long days collecting data. One participant's study compared the functionality of Rhode Island Red, Black Australorp, and single comb White Leghorn eggs, ultimately finding no significant differences between the breeds in terms of their functional properties. Throughout this rigorous process, the team members supported one another as friends, drawing encouragement from mentors like Dr. Cray who provided guidance and humor to keep the group motivated. Beyond the laboratory work, the program prepared its young researchers for a major stage by presenting their findings at the Poultry Science Association conference in Toronto in 2026. Alongside their peers, these four young ladies presented their research during the annual meeting held in conjunction with the World's Poultry Science Association. This experience allowed them to not only share their specific discoveries but also to listen to and learn from other experts presenting on diverse topics ranging from disease management and nutrition to animal welfare and meat quality. The exposure to such a broad spectrum of poultry science expanded their understanding far beyond their initial projects, fostering a comprehensive appreciation for the field. Ultimately, the Poultry Pioneers program serves as a catalyst for personal and professional growth, transforming participants' interests into potential careers. For many, like one participant who originally dreamed of becoming a teacher or nurse, the program ignited a deep passion that led them to excel in poultry science and consider it a viable career path. The initiative provides a level of readiness that goes beyond standard 4-H expectations, empowering members to tackle work that makes a tangible difference in the world. By fostering a community of like-minded individuals who are eager to learn and contribute, the program invites new members to join their ranks and continue the legacy of innovation in poultry science.

Poultry Pioneers is the first program of its kind anywhere in our nation and anywhere in 4-H. [music] It's an opportunity for 4-H'ers who have a passion for poultry and science to go ahead and learn the actual science that will make a difference in small flock owners' lives. >> So at this station, I will be collecting the data on the inside of the egg, like the shell strength, weight of the egg, and the shell thickness. All this will help the small flock owners >> [music] >> decide on what breed chicken they want to buy for their small flock. So right now, these are for making our mayonnaise, which we're going to test and figure [music] out how the eggs we're using, the different breeds, affect the colors of the mayonnaise >> [music] >> and how it responds, texture, etc. >> We had four Poultry Pioneers, and I wanted them to get experience working with eggs. So half the group worked on interior and exterior egg quality, simple parameters, learning the principles of science. The other two, who had a mind focused more towards >> [music] >> some of the in-depth and cooking science, food science, they took the eggs to the next level and did some more um scientific functionality measures to see how those eggs would function rather than what they were. >> So we started around November or December [music] with Zoom meetings on how to use PowerPoint and Excel, and we read different research articles to figure out exactly what we were going to be doing, writing research articles. In [music] January, we began our research and spent two 13-hour days, me and my partner Elizabeth Knight, and then the two days prior it was the other two um girls on my team. We're really all just friends. We were able to not only just learn things about eggs, but we have been able to encourage each other. Dr. Cray has been hilarious. She's always there to help us. >> My favorite part about poultry pioneers is I get to work with other people and just doing the research was amazing to me. So my research project involved the functionality of Rhode Island Red eggs compared to Black Australorp eggs >> [music] >> and single comb White Leghorn eggs. According to my study, there was no significant difference between the breeds for [music] egg functionality. >> The Poultry Science Association conference in 2026 was held in Toronto, Canada and held in conjunction with the World's Poultry Science [music] Association. Although our young ladies only presented at the Poultry Science Association [music] annual meeting. All four young ladies were in the same session, gave their presentations. [music] They were also able to go and listen to other presenters in different realms from disease to nutrition, [music] welfare, and meat quality. >> So 4-H is what got me into poultry science. Like most little girls, I just wanted to be a teacher or a nurse, but then I really got into it and excelled in it and I was like, "Hey, let's just make a career out of this." >> The most wonderful part about Poultry Pioneers is it gives that next level [music] beyond ready preparedness that 4-H is seeking out in our 4-H members. If you're a 4-H and you're ready to do the work that makes the world work, we're here. We're ready and we're waiting for you. Come be a Poultry Pioneer.
