Video summary
Fran UPC, who previously participated in CCC camps and delivered short lightning talks, now leads the Food Hacking Base, an initiative that originated within the Hackers on a Plane community. This project focuses on organizing workshops, presentations, and various food hacking experiments to foster collaboration among enthusiasts. Over the past year, Fran expanded the scope of these activities by organizing a European hacking tour that included stops in Prague, Hamburg, and Holland, where he conducted numerous workshops and reunited with fellow hackers. Additionally, he joined 091 Labs in Ireland to collaborate with a group called 091 Brewers, engaging in both non-alcoholic and alcoholic brewing experiments, though the latter proved more popular among participants.
A significant highlight of this period was the CCC Camp event, which Fran describes as five days of madness filled with diverse culinary activities. During the camp, attendees enjoyed sushi workshops featuring Indonesian cuisine, participated in CR workshops led by guests from Russia, and attended parties hosted by Polish hacker spaces. The event relied entirely on donations and open-source principles, allowing anyone interested to contribute resources or skills to make things happen. Following the main events, the group continued their creative endeavors with printing workshops and sushi making sessions, while also launching a new cheese tasting session downstairs led by Francois, inviting attendees to explore interests in crofting and other related topics.
Looking ahead, Fran has outlined ambitious plans for 2012, including a move to Japan to study traditional fermentation techniques, which he believes are remarkable and worth sharing with the wider community. He emphasizes that food hacking, often overlapping with DIY bio and biotechnology, represents a vital component of society and the hacker movement. By strengthening hacker centers and encouraging more people to get involved in brewing and experimentation, Fran hopes to create a more vibrant and connected global network of innovators. His ultimate goal is to disseminate the knowledge gained from these international experiences and inspire others to join the movement, ensuring that such collaborative and experimental food projects continue to thrive in future conferences like 29C3 and beyond.
