2024 North Texas Annual Conference: Ordination and Commissioning
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The 2024 North Texas Annual Conference gathered for a solemn service dedicated to the ordination and commissioning of new ministers, beginning with worship and an opening prayer that invoked Jesus Christ as Apostle, High Priest, Shepherd, and Bishop. The liturgy featured readings from Ephesians regarding the depth of God's love and John 6 concerning the feeding of the five thousand, which emphasized Jesus' divine identity and provision, while a sermon highlighted the critical role of fervent prayer in ministry, drawing inspiration from early church history and John Wesley. During this sacred time, specific candidates were presented for various roles: Christina Marie Hilderbrand, Randall Glenn Lucas, Gracie Marie Mard, Melissa Ethel Nelms, and Christopher Michael Vaughn were ordained as Elders, while Jennifer Lynn Bates, June Daniel Cho, Stella Cho, Colin Michael Craft, Kimberly An Efor, Monica Lynn Frasier, Kristen Perkins Glover, Shandon Chastidy Kleene, Carol Sibl Trus, Valerie Jean Su, and Kristen Nicole Steed were commissioned as provisional members.
The newly ordained Elders affirmed their faith in the Triune God and Scripture, committing to duties such as preaching, pastoral supervision, counseling, seeking justice, and governing the church, with two bishops laying hands on them to authorize their authority to preach the Word, administer sacraments, and order church life. Simultaneously, several individuals received transfer of orders from Deacon to Elder, including Christina Hilderbrand, Randall Glenn Lucas, Grace Marie Mard, Melissa Ethel Nelms, and Christopher Michael Vaughn, whose rule of life focuses on servanthood, leading discipleship, and serving the poor and oppressed. The officiant noted that while nothing externally changed for these new elders, everything had internally shifted due to God's work, emphasizing their calling to care deeply for people as spiritual leaders who must meet individuals where they live.
In addition to the ordinations, the service included commissions for provisional members to proclaim the Gospel and announce God's reign, equipping the church for ministry, while existing deacons were authorized to preside over baptism and communion effective January 1, 2025, despite no new full-connection deacons being ordained that year. The congregation also offered financial support for summer camps at Bridgeport Camp to ensure accessibility for all youth, reinforcing the community's commitment to service and inclusion. Candidates throughout the service affirmed their loyalty to the United Methodist Church and their dedication to defending its doctrines, embodying the spirit of a "Praying Church" through their dependence on God.
The event concluded with prayers of thanksgiving, musical worship, and the traditional dismissal benediction, marking a significant moment in the life of the conference where new leaders were empowered by the Holy Spirit for their respective offices. The atmosphere reflected a deep sense of spiritual renewal and continuity, as the church celebrated the transition of individuals into higher levels of ministry and welcomed new provisional members to serve alongside established clergy. This gathering not only strengthened the leadership structure within the North Texas Annual Conference but also reaffirmed the collective commitment to faith, service, and the ongoing mission of the church in the community.

please remain standing in body or Spirit
as you're
able Our Gospel reading this evening is
written in The Gospel according to John
in the sixth chapter beginning at the
first
verse John chapter 6 6: 1-
21 after this Jesus went to the other
side of the Sea of Galilee also called
The Sea of
tiberias a large crowd kept following
him because they saw the signs that he
was doing for the
sick Jesus went up the mountain and sat
down there with his
disciples now the Passover the Festival
of the Jews was near
when he looked up and saw a large crowd
coming toward him Jesus said to Phillip
where are we to buy bread for these
people to eat he said this to test him
for he himself knew what he was going to
do Philip answered him 200 dinari would
not buy enough bread for each of them to
get a
little one of his disciples Andrew Simon
Peter's brother said to him there is a
boy here who has five barley Loaves and
two fish but what are they among so many
people Jesus said make the people sit
down now there was a great deal of grass
in the place so they sat down about
5,000 in
all then Jesus Took the Loaves and when
he had given thanks he distributed them
to those who were seated so also the
fish as as much as they
wanted when they were satisfied he told
his disciples gather up the fragments
left over so that nothing may be
lost so they gathered them up and from
the fragments of the five barley loaves
left by those who had eaten they filled
12
baskets when the people saw the sign
that he had done they began to say this
is indeed the prophet who is to come
into the world
when Jesus realized that they were about
to come and take him by force to make
him King he withdrew again to the
mountain by
himself when evening came his disciples
went down to the Sea got into a boat and
started across the sea to
Capernaum it was now dark and Jesus had
not yet come to them the sea became
rough because a strong wind was
blowing when they had roded about three
or four miles they saw Jesus walking on
the sea and coming near the boat and
they were
terrified but he said to them it is I do
not be
afraid then they wanted to take him into
the boat and immediately the boat
reached the land toward which they were
going the word of God for the people of
God thanks be to God please be seated
May the grace of God and the Peace of
our Lord Jesus Christ be with your
spirit join me in
prayer gracious and loving
God grant us the ability through your
spirit to fully comprehend the
immeasurable breath length height and
depth of your love and to experience
your presence in our
lives enable us to grasp the boundless
Love Of
Christ a love that surpasses all
understanding we pray that your word may
transform us from
within renewing our minds and conforming
us to the image of Jesus our lord and
savior
amen so my first
appointment my trust
chair um shared a story with
me and he said you know when I was
younger I was quite something
else he said at one
time I was going to uh go out with my
friends and my mom who was a single
parent at that time had four
boys said to me you're not
going and I said why not I'm an adult I
can do whatever I
want my mom said to me fine you leave
and I'll start
praying
so aruro
Arthur said I'm going
anyway so he got in the
car turned it
on drove around the block parked it and
went in the
house and and his mother said Albina she
was about
5'4 she said I thought you were leaving
I said well I'm not leaving you're going
to
pray he respected his mother's prayer
life and uh he was not going to match
Wills with a Praying
Mother some of you are here because your
mom's prayed for you a lot help them
Lord help her help them
so let me ask you something you know we
just read the Liturgy about ordination
and everything else and say will
you lead the people of God with prayer
with study of scripture and everything
else and everything starts with prayer
if you notice maybe you
didn't but uh prayer is not
neutral it's
essential it's essential to our
ministry it's
vital and and how we pray
really exemplifies whether we have more
faith in God or more faith in
ourselves right because we're pretty
sure about ourselves sometimes we don't
know what God can
do prayer was essential for the people
of God and the early
church who had few
resources very little social
influence and believe it or not no
long-term ter strategies for
success they didn't have much of a
strategy you know what the strategy was
to
pray that was a
strategy it was very simple to pray
fervently and to depend upon the god of
the
universe to guide and to save and to
heal and to liberate and to provide for
their needs and if God didn't show up
they were in a lot of
trouble they pray
prayed consider
this when there was a famine or drought
God's People
Prayed when they were in bondage they
prayed when they faced challenges they
prayed when they were surrounded by
enemies they they prayed when sickness
struck they when they needed guidance
they when they were persecuted they When
leaders were needed they when they were
mourned and when they were mourning and
in sorrow they
when God delivered them they and when
they gathered to worship they they
prayed they prayed all the time
interestingly enough the only thing that
the disciples asked Jesus to teach them
to do was Lord teach us how to
pray that's the only thing recorded in
the gospels I've looked for other things
I haven't found anything else I Think
Jesus was always teaching them but they
said teach us to pray the way you pray
the way that you pray so dependent upon
God cuz we want that in our lives
because we know know that this work is
impossible without the help of God on
our lives the disciples before when
Jesus was ascended we just went through
Ascension Sunday and when the Jesus says
you all go to Jerusalem stay in
Jerusalem and wait for the power wait
for the power it'll it'll come down and
it's a promise of God and and you know
just wait and so what did the disciples
do they stayed in Jerusalem and at the
place that they were staying and they
went up to the upper room and what do
you think they were doing they were
praying
constantly
constantly and the spirit fell upon them
empowered them with boldness to preach
to teach and to baptize the Nations one
person at a time one family at a time
one community at a time and here's the
thing maybe we don't know we don't know
this but without fervent prayer for
God's promised Holy Spirit there might
not be have been a Pentecost or even a
church we might not even be here
today cuz Jesus said wait and pray and
they
prayed and God did amazing things God
did far more abundantly than all they
could ever ask or think or
imagine their prayer was desperate and
it was dependent and the church turned
the world upside down not because they
had a lot of influence or power or
leaders but because they prayed and God
worked to them in powerful ways ways
that they could not accomplish on their
own in Acts 17:6 it says that the people
in thessalonica accused the Disciples of
turning the world upside down and
proclaiming Jesus as a Messiah King and
challenging the existing social and
religious
order
prayer prayer is
disruptive this accusation highlights
the impact that they had on the
influence that the early Christian
Movement had that desperately dependent
upon God In Prayer their faith was
powerful and it was rooted in Christ and
through prayer the spirit Bolden them to
challenge prevailing beliefs and disrupt
the nature of things in the order with
their
message it rocked the
world this prayer life showed that these
people were dependent upon God to show
up and for God to
act and when God acted the church and
Christ and God were
glorified for all generations so that we
could teach the grand the children and
and the siblings th this is the god that
we serve and this is the god that gets
us out of stuff and keeps us moving
forward the god that accompanies Us in
life and we teach them to the Next
Generation so that they can place their
hope in
God the prayer life of God's people in
the early church showed their trust that
God can accomplish far more than all
they can ever ask or think or imagine
sometimes I tell you the truth I don't
know how we're going to do stuff
I really
don't so we
pray and sometimes by the time we get an
answer it might not be the way that we
had thought it was going to happen but
we open ourselves to be led by God to
follow where God is leading us because
after all this here's a good thing for
all of us pastors to know the church
doesn't belong to us it belongs to Jesus
and the people belong to Christ we're
called to serve and to help them build
their faith and edify and send them into
the world as Christ followers to make a
difference it's never
ours It All Belongs to Christ as and if
you read the full book of Ephesians say
who is who is the head of the church but
has raised the church up next to
him prayer is a backbone of the wesan
movement the United Methodist movement
or the Methodist movement would not have
been
here were not for Wesley's utter
dependence upon it Wesley believed
prayer was crucial to fostering
spiritual growth within the church and
empowering its mission in the
world fervent dep dependence upon prayer
will be part of the culture of the New
Horizon Texas conference we will be a
Praying church and we will put that at
the top of what we do Wesley emphasized
prayer and expressed his desperate
dependency upon it in his journals and
his sermons he said stuff like prayer is
where the the action is sometimes we
think prayer is is inactivity like I I
got so much work to do I don't have time
to pray we think it's like you know
cutting into our
day God will do nothing says wesy but an
answer to
prayer and here's a good one for us
Methodist busybody
pastors
I I have so much to do so much to do
that I spend several hours in prayer
before I'm able to do
it don't just go out there with all this
energy without spending time in prayer
to make sure that your energy is going
to to make an impact it's not about the
quantity it's about the quality of our
work and how do we best Zone in in our
work so so it makes an impact and a
difference instead of exhausting
ourselves in 150 activities that really
when you put them all together they
could have been better harnessed and
marshalled into one one or two singular
efforts and then of course Wesley says
and souls filled with love the desire to
please God is continual
prayer in tonight's Gospel reading those
who approached Jesus in the wilderness
were drawn because of his the signs and
that he performed but failed to fully
understand who he
was this is a this is a a a a story of
the signs of Christ feeding the
multitudes but that's not the main point
of the story Story the main point was do
people really understand who Jesus
is and
so was he like
Moses or was he the Son of God who came
to save and offer abundant eternal life
to all who
followed you see when when Moses in the
wilderness asked like where are we going
to get bread and meat to feed all these
people it was a
crisis he really didn't know where it
was going to come from
you're like oh I don't know but then God
is in Mercy
provided when Jesus asked Philip the
question where are you going to get
bread to feed all these
people it was a
test and it was a test to reveal that
God could do abundantly and exceedingly
far more than Philip could ever imagine
so what do you got I got five fish and
two loaves of bread that's
enough put in my hands let's see what we
can do with it and it multiplied
5,000 men had women and children 15,000
people then they picked up 12
baskets didn't rot or spoil it just 12
baskets full of food because it wasn't
just enough it was abundantly
more it was much more than they could
think or imagine this is and so Jesus
was trying to say this is this is who I
am I I am the one who has accessibility
to God's inexhaustible
riches you just need to
ask sometimes we get so limited in our
little problems that we cannot think
that how am I going to get out of this
situation and when we allow God to enter
in and to allow the grace to come in
things start to
happen wonderfully
unexpectedly abundantly more than what
we could imagine sometime we just get
too impatient with our prayer
life and we don't wait for for God to to
Really allow things to develop and to
and to happen in front of us and and say
like I like the one says and behold like
what are we going to do now we're up
against the Red Sea behold stand back
watch
this when the disciples saw Jesus
walking in the water they were
terrified they were terrified and Jesus
by walking on the water surface and
using the name I am revealed himself as
the great I am the one who said to Moses
who will go with me who are you I am who
I am and there Jesus revealed the
Divinity I am not Moses I am more than
Moses the Son of God was able to do
abundantly far more than what the
disciples could ask or
imagine the writer of Ephesians whether
it's Paul or not just doesn't really
matter but for that person Jesus was
everything and and he prayed for his
people to experience the same life that
he had received through Christ Jesus I
I'm almost say it was Paul because he
recognized that everything he had held
dear flowed from the relationship with
Jesus and Jesus was a life-giving force
and he prayed for the church to know
Christ and the boundless love as he did
and now here's the thing that this
pastor is on his knees and it it says I
un bended knee I come before and so
that's saying a
lot it's saying that
Jesus is Lord and not
Caesar so prayer was an act of
resistance to the established way of
things prayer was a hope and a vision
for God's Reign to
flourish and what what drove this person
of prayer was that he wanted this church
to experience the fullness of the love
of God in their life and because the
whole argument in in Ephesians is that
look Jesus Christ to the cross have
broken down all the Dividing Walls of
hostility and is creating a new Humanity
from people of all groups and tribes and
Nations and
races uh therefore you know we we we
glorify God because this is God's plan
from the very beginning to unify broken
humanity and you're an example of that
as you come
together under one Lord one faith and
one
baptism and so we pick up this prayer
and we we're kind of overhearing
somebody else's prayer for the
church and and this person deeply cares
for the people
now
you
are are are going to be in settings
whether you're going to be a chaplain or
Pastor or associate member associate
pastor and there's nothing more than you
can do for your church than to pray for
its
people that is like the life
and I don't know what system you use
whether you're going to pray for a few
every day over the course of the year or
you going to be a a crisis prayer when
there's a problem you're going to pray
for this and then you wait until the
next TR to pray for that I I don't I
don't know what what system you have but
you have to devote yourself to praying
for the people that God has entrusted to
your
care because you have a big
responsibility to to lead people
in in the ways of Christ and in to to be
a faithful disciple and follower of
Jesus Christ to help them when they
struggle to help them reorient and maybe
reframe how they're looking at
things and sometimes you know the
counsel that you give makes a really big
difference in somebody's life and so you
need to pray for wisdom and Grace and
also just an ability to really hear
what's going on so that you can help
people draw nearer to Christ draw nearer
to God talk about the love of
Christ have service born in their hearts
and to live a generous life in the
world and so this person wants wants the
church to
experience the strength and the
spiritual power and the knowledge of
God's
abundance he wants Christ to inv F and
overwhelm the church with Grace and love
what a beautiful prayer Lord just Infuse
them with your life he realizes that
when Christ dwells in Hearts you get
everything you get formation you get
character you get service you get
witness he prays for the church to be
filled with the fullness of God who is
able to do abundantly more than they can
ask or imagine and and he prays
continuously as he humbly asked God to
bless the church with these four
spiritual resources to be strengthened
with a spiritual power in their inner
being we we pay a lot of attention to
how we look on the outside right it's
important that you know we have the
right body shape and skin color and all
this kind of stuff uh or maybe the
Perfect online Persona you know we kind
of create this Alter
Ego uh but you know what God doesn't
look at all all of that stuff we know
God looks at the heart because that's
where character is born that's where
faithfulness is born That's Where Mercy
comes from that's where compassion comes
from that's where kindness comes from
that's where the ability to forgive your
enemies comes from and so Paul is saying
I pray that Christ be born in your inner
being what and and this is the beauty
that God looks at and when when Christ
dwells in us he like Christ does like a
remodeling job in in our in in our in
our lives or in the church Our Lives
should look differently because Christ
dwells in it and some of the stuff some
of the attitudes the biases of
prejudices and and the sing thinking and
all that kind of stuff should be
transformed by the presence of Christ in
our lives and the church should be
transformed by the love of God as you
see a church and and and when and when
you have a church that reflects the
grace and the love of God in the people
in who they have become as they been
under the ministry of the word and the
prayer and the worship it's a beautiful
thing and I see it all the time in our
churches that we go to said how did
these people get to be that
way because the the fullness of God is
dwelling in their hearts and
transforming them into the image and
likeness of Christ he prays that that
they would be filled with the presence
of Christ and their hearts as they're
rooted and grounded in love you see this
this work is exhausting if it's not
rooted and grounded in the love of God
we're just doing physical manual labor
but if we're rooted and grounded in in
in the life of God then our our strength
and our energy and our powers is endless
it just flows through us we get
exhausted when we stop depending upon
God for our work and Trust in ourselves
and then go at it until we can't anymore
until we can't take one more step but
when you're rooted and grounded in
Christ that Supernatural power of God
just just continues to come and come and
come and come and come it's
inexhaustible H we get tired we need a
break from time to time but the ability
to stay with it over the Long Haul to
persevere in the faith and not quit and
give up that's not humanly possible
because Ministry is not always
easy and by the way Jesus didn't say the
ministry was going to be easy he just
promised to be with us right so don't
forget
that this writer this prayer Grant ask
God to grant them the power to grasp the
greatness of God's love the greatness of
God's
love and then to give them the ability
to understand the dimensions of God's
power and and mercy and Grace and wisdom
it it's like a Ser Ephesians is a sermon
that is meant to be read to the churches
it's a circular letter that in all those
title Ephesians it's meant it's a sermon
that's meant to be read to the whole
body of Christ so that so that they
could understand you know who Christ was
the first three chapters are about you
know the theological discussions about
Christ and the work of Christ and then
it's this prayer and then it's like okay
these are if if if this if this is Jesus
we're going to pray that you be filled
with the fullness so that you can live
this way a life worthy of your calling
and and so it's an interesting letter in
that it's an exhortation it's also a
theological grounding but it's also the
power to like this the the word said may
may may God who give you the will to do
these things give you the grace to
accomplish give you the power to
accomplish things I'll do it yeah but do
you have the grace and this is where God
comes in and to know this love is to be
filled with it and you know in all this
Dimensions to be spiritually
mature and and our whole idea of our
spiritual life is to be spiritually
mature and to help others grow into the
fullness and stature of the maturity of
Jesus Christ and so and so and so that
the the height the height and the depth
is kind of like the vertic ality of of
the dimensions of God it doesn't have an
ending and it doesn't have either way it
just goes like this which means our our
vertical relationship with God our our
our our our our prayer life our devotion
our searching after the the the
knowledge and and the goodness and and
searching the the
unfathomable life of God through through
study and and through reflection and
meditation this is the verticality and
then the horizontal right the the width
and the bread and that's a church out in
out in the world expanding itself to all
the dimensions all beyond the the
corners of the world and and and the and
the greater our vertical life is then
the greater horizontal life is and so a
in a way it's kind of a cruciform
spirituality that has a verticality and
and the horizontal aspect of it and and
because the the thing is that we're just
not a a oh it's just about Jesus and me
and my experience praise the Lord
Lord we we are a church that God calls
to
service on behalf of Jesus Christ in the
world and in fact the church is the only
organization that exists for the sake of
others and you've heard that before it
doesn't just exist for its members but
also for those who are not yet part of
it and and the mission is possible
because God gives us strength and fills
us with the fullness that we need
when we're
tired God says I can do abundantly far
more than all you can ask or
imagine when we feel
stuck God can do abundantly far more
than all we can ask or
imagine when we Face difficulties and
disappointments and despair God is able
to do far more than all we can ask or
imagine in every situation and
predicament God is able to do do more so
let us not be discouraged but trust that
God is able to do
more as you are ordained and
commissioned we will pray that God
grants you the grace and power to
fulfill all of your pastoral duties and
then
some but we ask you to pray desperately
and dependently for God's love and grace
and power to fill your heart and to also
direct your ministry
and let me say don't try to control your
ministry when you're taking a vow
ortion you're you're you're trus in
God right we we we like to do this stuff
but we like to have the last word on
it and uh you know when we do that we
just limit how God wants to use
us so I just I just pray that you would
be open to all the ways that God wants
to use your unique gifts for Ministry in
the world
When you
pray and I and I trust that you will
pray pray for your church to be rooted
in Christ's love to reflect God's unity
and to break down the Dividing Walls of
hostility friends are our mission is
possible because God's ability to do
more than all we can ask or
imagine the mission is possible because
God gives us strength and this is one
thing that God enjoys doing giving us
strength Roots us in Christ love and
fill us with the fullness we we
need when the world is counting us out
God is able to do more when others are
saying you're finished God is able to do
more when we think there's no way out
God is able to do more the spirit will
make a way for us into God's power and
strength a way into God's blessing a way
into the wideness of God's grace and
mercy a into the richness of God's glory
a way into God's joy way to God's
promises way into the fullness of the
love of Christ to God be the glory to
God be the glory to God be the glory to
God be the glory in Christ Jesus to God
be the glory in the church to God be the
glory for all generations forever and
ever and
ever be praying
pastors and you will see God do
abundantly far more than all you can ask
or think or imagine amen

thank
you thank you
Elders would you join in here today
right now there you go so how are you
feeling huh nothing's
changed but everything has
changed you don't know it yet but it has
it really really has it's a
mystery right that's the way God
works when we say yes to God God does
amazing things
through our willingness so thank you for
saying yes to the call I can't imagine
the things that you had to consider and
the people you had to talk to and and
and get their affirmation from and ask
for their prayers but the church has
been praying for you for a long
time Generations you are what the church
has been praying for and now you pray
for the Church of the Next Generation so
that there'll be people like you 30 60
100 years from now that you help pray
into the call right and so that's how
this
works and so just as people have prayed
for you you pray for your people then
trust God to do the rest God raises up
leaders for all the work of all those
that are
baptized so may God bless you may you be
spiritual leaders first and
foremost faithful Disciples of Jesus
Christ show the way walk with the people
love the people you heard this addage
right people don't know don't care how
much you know until they know how much
you care all right so care for the
shepherd for the people of God Pope
Francis says that you all should
stink because you're carrying sheep all
day and so you should have on your
clothing the odor of
sheep right and that your shoes
shouldn't be polished because you should
be out in the streets meeting people
where they live and leading the church
Church into those places all right so we
have high expectation and high hopes for
all that God will accomplish through you
would you please turn so we can receive
you these are your ordained elders
