Video summary

Go to narc survivor. co.uk. Now let's get into it. When the narcissist does these irritating and disruptive things at home, it may make you wonder if they know what they're doing. And many times, they are aware of it. It is a deliberate and conscious decision. It is calculated and premeditated. And it's designed to produce a negative effect in you. It's designed to make you feel like you're going crazy or as though something is wrong with you. But once you understand these tactics and you're able to predict them, it takes away their power because a lot of what they do is about catching you by surprise. That is how they take your power away from you. One, setting the emotional temperature of the home. Their mood becomes everyone's mood. If they're happy, everyone should be happy. If they're angry, everyone feels it. Nobody is allowed to simply have their own emotional state. They expect you to feel whatever they are feeling in that moment and absorb it as though it is a part of you. Because they view people as extensions [music] of themselves, they don't expect you to have your own separate individual feelings or experience. Two, loud monologues on the phone. They talk unnecessarily loudly, >> [music] >> especially when you're nearby, so you can't help but hear the conversation. And it is often deliberately directed at you or it is designed to interrupt whatever you're doing because they're feeling insecure, insignificant, and important, and cute. So they use these loud monologues on the phone to regain your attention and a sense of control. Three, talking to themselves loudly. They mutter random words or phrases and they often repeat the same things again and again, narrating what they're doing, complaining out loud, or having conversations with themselves. And it's often loud enough so that it's difficult for you to ignore because it's a tactic. It's a tool to capture your attention and maintain control. It may appear that they're having a conversation with themselves, but these conversations are often a form of passive aggression directed at you. Four, making deliberately loud noises. They slam doors, bang cupboards, [music] stomp around. They drop things and make unnecessary noise, particularly when you're trying to sleep, relax, or concentrate. Because when you're busy or when you're focusing on something, things that aren't concerning them or associated with them, they feel insignificant and irrelevant. So, they deliberately make loud noises to get you to focus on them again. Five, making immediate demands and deliberately inconveniencing you. They want something now. They don't care about what you're doing. They don't care if you're busy or whether it's convenient. Their need instantly becomes your priority, and they seem to have a knack for appearing the moment you finally sit down, or the moment you start watching something, put your headphones on, begin working, or simply get comfortable. They suddenly need something, so they start a conversation, ask an unnecessary question, make noise, or create some minor issue that demands your attention, because they cannot tolerate you being peacefully absorbed in your own world without involving themselves in it. They may also deliberately make your life more difficult. They may interrupt your routine, create extra work, take something you need, leaving things in inconvenient places, or making you repeatedly accommodate them. Because again, they don't view you as a separate, independent person with your own feelings and needs. They're arrogant and entitled, or they have a lack of empathy. So, they view you as their caretaker, their workhorse, their slave. And they expect you to drop everything and make your life revolve around them. Six, hijacking your space and moving your things. They take your usual seat. They occupy the space where you keep your belongings. They move your things, or they gradually take over shared areas until you feel like you don't actually have a space of your own. Because they want you to feel like you don't own anything. You don't have anything that belongs to you. So, that you don't develop a sense of identity, and then you're easier to control. Seven, constantly criticizing you. They make little comments, corrections, observations, and criticisms that make you feel like you're constantly being watched and evaluated inside your own home. Because they want to keep you walking on eggshells, doubting yourself, questioning yourself, second-guessing yourself, and looking to them for answers or reassurance. So, that they become your master. They hold authority over you. And then they're able to get you to work for them. Eight, turning your good moments into bad ones. When you get a promotion, change your appearance, feel confident, or experience something positive, they act deliberately indifferent. They give you a cold stare. They make a backhanded compliment, or they find us some way to undermine it. Instead of celebrating you, they subtly turn something positive into something negative. Because they don't want you to feel confident. They don't want you to feel proud of yourself. They don't want you to feel good about something outside of them. Because that takes away the control. It dilutes their supply of validation. Nine, forgetting things and act like nothing happened. They say or do something hurtful and then they deny it later, conveniently forget the conversation, or they behave completely normal again afterwards, leaving you wondering whether you're supposed to pretend nothing happened, too. Sometimes they do this as a means of control so that you can't confront them or hold them accountable. Other times it may be [music] because of shame. But other times, they may generally not even remember because they're shapeshifters. They gaslight themselves. A lot of the hurtful things they do are when they're disconnected [music] from their false image, so they don't identify with it. And if something ever comes up or if there's consequences, they attribute it to you because they disown the parts of themselves they don't like and assign them to you. 10, abusing what you care about. They hurt, threaten, or mistreat pets, children, possessions, or anything else they know you're emotionally attached to. This is particularly disturbing and it really reveals their lack of empathy because even if they had something against you, that's no reason for them to interfere with other people's lives, but they do. And not always because they don't care about anyone or anything. They may bond with pets or children to some extent, but the target isn't necessarily the thing itself. It's the emotional reaction they know it will produce in you, and that overrides everything else. So to them it's still worth it. If they can harm someone you care about or destroy your possessions, even when it inconveniences themselves, or even harm themselves, to them the reward is greater because nothing compares to your big action. And in their minds, the narrative is, "You made me do it." They don't ever blame themselves. As promised, I have something very important for you that will completely change the way you understand the narcissist's behavior. What really exposes that you're dealing with a narcissist, and what can completely destroy their gaslighting, is recognizing the double standards. Because look at the rules. If you're happy, you're selfish. You're showing off. You shouldn't be happy. If you're sad, you're overreacting. You're too sensitive. You're making a big deal out of nothing. You're not allowed to talk loudly on the phone. You're not allowed to question them. You're not allowed to criticize them. You're not allowed to challenge anything they do. You're expected to comply. You're expected to be quiet. You're expected to accommodate them. You're expected to work around them. You're expected to tolerate their demands and inconveniences. But when you need something, suddenly you're being demanding. When you take up space, suddenly you're selfish. And here's another huge one. If they're happy or proud of something, you're expected to support them. You're expected to celebrate them. You're expected to put your feelings aside and make their moment about them. Even if they've just taken something from you, even if they've hurt you, you're still expected to smile and celebrate. And when it comes to your mistakes, they remember everything. Every argument, every rejection, every mistake you've ever made, they bring it back years later as evidence of who you supposedly are. It's as though every mistake you've ever made is permanently stamped on your forehead. But their behavior, that's different. Their mistakes are forgotten, their cruelty is minimized, their behavior is justified, and somehow you're still the problem. And that's a double standard. They demand a level of understanding, forgiveness, and accommodation from you that they would never extend to you. And once you recognize that, the gaslighting starts to lose its power because you stop asking, "Am I really the problem?" And you start asking, "Why are the rules completely different for me?" That's the question that exposes everything. Because healthy relationships have mutual standards. If something isn't acceptable when you do it, it shouldn't suddenly become acceptable when they do it. And if they're allowed to have feelings, boundaries, needs, opinions, happiness, and space, so are you. I hope this video was helpful for you today.
