1 LOG BURNER TO HEAT 2 ROOMS SIMULTANEOUSLY.....DOUBLE ASPECT FIREPLACE
Watch on YouTubeVideo summary
The video documents an unexpected and extensive renovation project involving a large fireplace that was originally built directly into the floor with significant concrete work. Upon beginning the demolition, the team discovered that the structure was far more substantial than anticipated, requiring the removal of massive stone pieces that were split into three distinct sections: a top piece, a bottom piece, and a thin edge section. This discovery transformed what was expected to be a simple patching job into a major reconstruction effort, as the original spine of the building had been removed during previous works, necessitating the installation of new structural cheeks and screw ties to restore the wall's integrity before any finishing could take place.
A significant portion of the project involved salvaging materials from the destroyed fireplace while managing the logistical challenges of heavy demolition work. The team successfully recovered several bricks to patch the face side of the remaining structure, leaving the fire surround inside for potential reuse or sale on platforms like eBay, though they noted that some large cast components were permanently concreted into the floor and could not be removed. To handle the intensive cutting required throughout the day, the crew utilized a backup set of power tools with interchangeable batteries to ensure continuous productivity, highlighting the practical need for having spare equipment ready when working in such demanding conditions.
The renovation also addressed moisture management and heating efficiency by installing water suppression systems in both the living room and the bedroom, which proved effective despite the initial concerns about dampness. Since the fireplace is designed to generate heat, no additional insulation was placed beneath the new structure, allowing it to function as a double-aspect log burner capable of warming two rooms simultaneously while being visible from both spaces. The project concluded with the installation of a large dog door and the final cleaning of the area to remove stains, resulting in a restored fireplace that successfully combines structural reinforcement with aesthetic appeal for when the owners return.

Right. Friday. Wasn't expecting to be
here today. I think that's one huge
piece that
was concreted into the floor.
Right. Friday. Wasn't expecting to be
here today, but wasn't expecting this
fireplace to be like this either.
So there you go. A lot more concrete
going in there than we're expecting and
it's bigger than we're expecting.
Obviously when we got here that was a
full fireplace path and everything in it
still usable and that was a solid wall.
So that skip,
if I'd realize that I've got a big skip,
but we've just managed cuz the stuff
that came out of there is unbelievable.
And it's all made up.
There's the original. There's the huge
pieces of stone cuz if you can pick that
up,
it's three pieces there. There's a top
piece, the bottom piece, and a thin
piece at the edge there. Not not the
best idea for building the fireplace.
And then one I think that's one huge
piece that.
So we're going to strengthen as best we
can. Put the put the new cheeks in.
Plenty of screw ties. Lint done
yesterday. So this is all just extra
work that we we weren't expecting. But
you've got you've got no idea till you
start knocking it down.
And also this one we had no idea.
There's so much building up to do on
this.
I thought it' be a bit of patching. not
not that that much block work, but as as
I said, it's we've took the spine out
the building. That was the strength of
the building. So, we put the strength
back into it.
Yeah. Made up with how that's turned
out. So, it's just the finishing touches
today. Finish this, get tidied up, give
it all the white down, and make it nice
when they come back. We'll leave the
fireplace, the fire surround inside.
You can chuck the this in the garden. I
expect to go one eBay or something. I
think it's cast. I think it's cast. But
that was concreted into the floor. That
was unbelievable. That
everything else is gone. So, we salvaged
a few bricks to patch the face side of
that. And Alex is going to do the cuts
for while I get the mixing. We're just
giving the batteries a boost. We
definitely need another set.
If you're going to be cutting all day,
one set isn't enough. You need a backup
set. So, obviously, while the one's
charging, the other ones are working.
So, um yeah, that's on the bucket.
That's on the shopping list to get if
we've got a five and a four. And I think
I think 600 quid for an eight.
So, we buy another five. We've got two
fives as a backup.
And you can also use the air power, the
BNQ's own air bow batteries. They're the
same batteries. Same same manufacturer.
So, um, just look out for deals.
Dirty source from using water
suppression. Oh, yeah. Water suppression
in the living room. That's another first
scaffold in the bedroom. Water
suppression in in the living room. It
worked out okay in the end. And no doubt
coming up through there anymore cuz it's
got all the DPM under it.
No need for insulation under it because
it's a fireplace. It's going to be
heated.
So, [music]
right, let's get this mix sorted. Thank
you.
>> So, let's talk about your new album.

>> There we go.
One extremely big uh dog door.
No, that's um What is it? So, what's
going is it a fireplace or
>> is it like a fireplace going in?
>> Log burner.
>> So, it'll heat both rooms. It could be
seen from both rooms.
>> There we go.
So, there's that and that.
A big old fireplace replacing job.
Lovely stuff. That is that done. We just
need to get get a bit of water, scrub
some of these stains out. But it back on
now.
>> Oh god. Yeah.
