Video summary
In this lecture on 1 Corinthians, the focus shifts from previous discussions on divisions within the church to a severe issue of sexual immorality reported to Paul. The specific case involves a man living with his father's wife, an act so egregious that even pagan Gentiles would not tolerate it, yet the Corinthian church was proud and had allowed this sin to persist without mourning or correction. Paul addresses this by instructing the believers to remove the unrepentant individual from their fellowship, effectively delivering him to Satan. This action is not intended to condemn the person's soul but rather to remove them from the spiritual protection of the church community, placing them in a situation where they might face the consequences of their sinful desires and eventually repent for the sake of their spirit being saved on the day of the Lord.
Paul uses the metaphor of leaven to explain how unchecked sin affects the entire body of believers, comparing the situation to Passover bread which must be free of yeast to remain pure. Just as a small amount of leaven can permeate an entire lump of dough, tolerating one person's ongoing sin can corrupt the culture and pride of the whole church. Therefore, the instruction is to purge out the old leaven of malice and wickedness so that the congregation may become a new lump characterized by sincerity and truth. This teaching emphasizes that while believers should not judge those outside the faith or engage in judging hearts, they must actively address and correct sinful behaviors within their own community to maintain spiritual purity and integrity.
The lecture concludes by balancing this strict instruction with the essential nature of grace and truth, noting that Paul's harsh command was an exception reserved for situations where sin had become a pervasive cultural problem rather than a norm. The ultimate goal of such disciplinary action is restoration; as seen in 2 Corinthians, the man involved eventually repented and was welcomed back into fellowship. This process requires leaders and members to make difficult decisions to protect the church's witness while simultaneously praying fervently for the repentance and healing of the individual, ensuring that truth and grace work hand in hand rather than allowing grace to become false love or truth to become rigid judgment.

Okay, recording has started. All right,
so welcome to the next lecture on 1
Corinthians. So, uh, in this lecture
we're going to go through 1 Corinthians
chapter 5. Now, the context before
starting chapter 5 is that, you know, so
far Paul has been addressing what?
Divisions.
There's a lot of divisions. There's lot
of groups, right? And so now Paul will
shift to an other issue. Okay, so
chapter five, you need to uh fasten your
seat belt cuz a little crazy
uh you know what what all he writes and
how how we how we should deal with these
issues. Okay. So in chapter 5 he will
start about a second issue that is
happening. Okay. So we will divide
chapter 5 into three sections. Verse 1
to5 verse 6 to8 and verse 9-13.
Okay. Verse 1 to5 verse 6 to8 verse
9-13. So can I just request one of us
here to read 1 Corinthians chapter 5
verse 1 to5 please?
It is actually reported that there is uh
sexual immorality among you and of a
kind that even pagans do not tolerate. A
man is sleeping with his father's wife
and you are proud. Shouldn't you uh
shouldn't you rather have gone into
morning and have put out of your uh
fellowship the man who has been doing
this? For my part, even though I am not
physically present, I am with you in
spirit. As one who is present with you
in this way, I have already passed
judgment in the name of our Lord Jesus
on the one who has been doing this. So
when you are assembled and I am with you
in spirit and the power of our Lord
Jesus is present, hand his man over to
Satan for the destruction of the flesh
so that his spirit may be saved on the
day of the Lord.
>> Yeah. So
1 Corinthians chapter 5, I told you
fasten your seat belt. It starts in
verse one only. Verse one, what does it
say? It is actually reported. So there's
a report that came to Paul that there is
sexual immorality. So so far in the
first four chapters we've not we've only
talked about divisions.
Chapter 5 is another issue in the church
and the issue is there is a report
something someone has told Paul that
there is sexual immorality among you
and then he gives a he writes about a
specific man what is the look at the
level of sexual immorality that there is
a man who is sleeping with his father's
wife now many scholars think that it is
his it must be his stepmother.
We don't know. It's just speculation.
But regardless, the truth of the matter
is he this man, this young man is
sleeping with his father's wife. I mean
and what Paul writes, he says it is it
is so shocking to hear that this is
coming from a church because
even the Gentiles
like it is even worse off than some of
the Gentiles is what he writes. So he
writes in verse 5,
oh man, this noise is it'll go. Okay,
we'll just wait for sorry there's a
okay
okay that let's read verse one again as
such sexual immorality is not even named
among the Gentiles meaning it is so bad
that even some of the Gentiles don't
talk about this it is that bad like for
a man to sleep with his father's wife
that's why he writes father's wife not
that's Most scholars think it's
stepmother because he doesn't call it
mother, right? So, stepmother most
likely, but just speculation. So, so
he's saying such a sin is there in the
church. This is no no longer about
division. He's moved on to the next
issue. The next issue is this issue
sexual immorality and not any kind of
sexual immorality. Sexual immorality
that is sometimes even the Gentiles
won't talk about it. Even they will be
ashamed. Then he says it is it has
become the culture has become so bad in
the church with this sin that they have
become proud. So verse two and three
verse verse 2 verse 2 3 4 and 5 verse
two it says and you are puffed up.
Puffed up simply means proud. Why are
they proud? Because they have tolerated
this sin. They have allowed this sin to
be there. They have allowed this man to
live unrepented, unwilling to change. So
seven years have gone by and so
somewhere along the point this this sin
has happened and they have tolerated it.
They are proud.
You have been puffed up and have not
rather moaned. Meaning this kind of sin
should actually grieve.
The heart of God is grieved when we sin.
And so we need to grieve. And he's
saying this sin is so bad that you've
not even moaned. That's how proud you
are. That is how like that's how much
this has gotten into. That's how much
the culture is. That you are proud that
you have not even mourned
that he who has done this deed might be
taken away from among you. So he's
giving first the culture then he's
giving the instruction. What is the
instruction? That he be taken away
remove him from the fellowship. Why? We
will read verse three. For I indeed as
absent in the body. So Paul is writing
this letter from another place. He's
absent. He's not there physically.
Right? I indeed absent in the body but
present in spirit have already judged.
Okay. Wait, pause. Didn't we just read
in the last two chapters we shouldn't
judge? So what is Paul writing here that
I have already judged this man? See
judgment because sometimes it sounds
contradictory, right? He's writing I
don't judge myself. My the only judge is
the lord whom is the righteous judge. So
how do we understand this? Because he
just wrote about judgment
uh in chapter 3 and four. How do we
understand this? How is he saying that I
have already judged I have passed my
judgment on this man? What is the
judgment? Remove him from fellowship.
Why? Because that the previous time when
he wrote about judgment is about
people's hearts, about their motives,
about their eternal destiny. That only
God can judge. Only God can judge
people's hearts. What is Paul judging
here? His sinful behavior.
his sinful actions.
So don't think that okay we are not
supposed to judge anything. No, we can
call out we cannot tolerate sinful
behavior, sinful actions that go against
the heart of God.
Are we understanding? When you pass
judgment simply means you're passing
your authority.
That's what happens, right? When we pass
judgment. And so Paul is the apostle
Paul is passing a judgment here.
And then he writes he writes in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ. Whenever you
gather in church we gather in the name
of our Lord Jesus Christ. In the name of
the Lord Jesus Christ, when you gather
together along with my spirit with the
power of our Lord Jesus, deliver such
one to Satan
for the destruction of the flesh
that his spirit may be saved in the day
of our Lord Jesus. So what is so he's
repeating the instruction first you take
him away out of fellowship. Then he
continues
that whenever you gather together, if
any fellowship happens in the name of
our Lord Jesus in this church, this man
should be removed from fellowship. And
then he uses a very interesting
statement.
He says, "Deliver such a man to Satan."
When you read that, you're like, "Whoa,
what is this, Paul?" Like what are you
writing?
This is a very very like that's why I
said fasten your seat belt. There are
some statements in this chapter is like
sometimes sounds very very intense.
So what does this mean? So I want to I
want to explain this slowly and let's
try and understand this. Okay. So it
says
no problem sir no worries I apologize
for being late. He writes no problem.
So he says remove such a man that such a
man should be delivered to Satan. It
simply means remove him from the
protection of fellowship.
Remove him from the protection. Put this
person outside of fellowship and
spiritual covering.
Okay. So
because he is unwilling to change,
because this sin is continuous, because
this sin is tolerated,
because the sin is so serious, Paul is
giving this instruction. So that that
phrase deliver such a man to Satan
simply means he is not like Paul is
saying don't he's not going to hell.
What does that mean? He's saying remove
him from fellowship.
So when you're not part of fellowship,
what happens? You're in the world.
Correct? Right. So that's what and and
in the world who is ruling
>> Satan.
>> Satan. That's what it means. So when you
remove him from deliver him from Satan,
it simply means remove him from fellow
fellowship spiritual covering. When we
are part of church, we need to
understand that we are part of a
spiritual house. The house of God, there
is a spiritual covering. Are we
understanding? With Jesus who is our
cornerstone, he is building this house.
And because this man is unwilling to
change, because this man is unrepented,
because he has caused a culture where
people are proud, where the church is
proud, they have tolerated the sin, it
has caused such it it has caused such a
bad culture. Paul is giving the
instruction, deliver him to Satan. What
does that mean? Deliver him outside.
Keep him outside of fellowship. But why?
Why? Now it sounds very harsh for Paul
to give this instruction. Correct? Does
it sound harsh? Yes. You're literally
Paul is literally telling remove him. I
don't him I don't want him to be part of
fellowship. It's like saying to your own
family member, please go outside of the
house. It's literally saying that. Let's
not mince our words. But why why does he
say that? So he says for the destruction
of the
flesh
and two things for the destruction of
the flesh that his spirit may be saved
in the day of the Lord. So two things
why is he giving this instruction
there's a reason one for the destruction
of his flesh. Second that his spirit may
be saved. So what does this mean?
Destruction of the flesh. The word flesh
here. Now when the Bible writes flesh,
it has a lot of meanings. It means body.
It means people. But the word flesh here
simply means a sinful desire.
Our flesh has appetites.
But these appetites when they are not
put properly can lead to sin. Example
gluttony. Our body likes to eat food,
right? But every day if you eat tell me
some bad jellybee
every day if you eat one tub of ice
cream
that's gluttony.
So in the same way so that's what he's
saying for the destruction of the flesh
keep him out of fellowship so that he
can take time to die to his flesh.
let him repent
and then when his flesh is destroyed
what will happen he'll be saved see Paul
is giving such a harsh instruction but
you can see his heart
to save him he's doing this to save him
sometimes in ministry in church
especially as pastors and leaders you
know being a pastor or a leader it's not
easy sometimes you have to do things
like this when the culture is bad. When
people are proud, when we are tolerating
sin, when it becomes so big,
we have to do such a thing where we will
have to make a decision. We have to be
bold enough, courageous enough by the
authority that God has given us as
shepherds, as leaders, as pastors
to do such an instruction. Now, I want
you to keep in mind
this. Now let's go to 1 Timothy 1 19-20
because Paul dealt similarly with two
men like this in Ephesus 1 Timothy 1
verse 19-20
there are two men called Haimeus
and Alexanderus
and Alexander because they were in error
Paul gave this instruction to be guard
to watch out for them. Don't let them
influence the church in Ephesus. 1
Timothy 1 19 to20. But what I'm trying
to say is this is the only time maybe
three or four times you can count. 1
Corinthians chapter 5, 1 Timothy 1 19-20
are the only times where God gives where
Paul gives such a harsh instruction.
Meaning this is not an instruction out
of the norm. It's not normal.
Paul doesn't see when there were
divisions did he say go out of the
church? No. But because of the severity
of the sin, because of the culture,
because it has become so bad, because
they have tolerated it,
Paul has given this harsh instruction.
So sometimes in ministry we need to
understand not always not the norm
sometimes like where Paul writes in
first 1 Corinthians chapter 5 1 Timothy
1 19 and 20 for these two men and and
along with this man he tells them to be
removed from fellowship. But what is the
heart? So that they may repent. They may
repent and be saved. You know what is
amazing? They did that. He did that this
man because in um in uh where is that?
I think it's in first 2 Corinthians in
the second letter
uh okay I can't find it but in the
second letter this man is restored and
Paul says
come back to fellowship.
So you see he has given the instruction
but we don't leave them there. We watch
over them. We we we see how their life
is and once they have been dead to their
flesh dead repented once they have done
that call them back.
So you see see the heart of the apostle
Paul right that he tells him to go out
of fellowship deliver him to Satan so
that he may be destroyed by his flesh.
take some time to think about what he
has done and unless he has truly
repented, call him back so that he might
be saved. This is the heart of a pastor.
This is the heart of an apostle where we
don't just give harsh instructions where
we don't just give harsh judgments
but those are for ultimately for
them to repent.
Now this is not the norm. only we do
these things only when the situation
calls for it. This is not the norm. We
don't see Paul writing this instruction
for us to remove people just like that.
Are we understanding right? So we need
to read this very carefully. Read this
in context. So there will be some points
maybe in church life or fellowship where
we will need to give certain
instructions to people because their sin
is infiltrating
and it's causing a culture of tolerance
and God does not want that.
So he's given that instruction. Are we
understanding first five verses right?
So what is the first five verses all
about? It's about action against sin.
how to take action against ongoing sin
in the local church.
Amen. So we need to we need to
understand that.
So, so it's sorry. So, it's 2
Corinthians 10:8
where I wanted to find that verse. 2
Corinthians 10:8 where he restores the
person. 2 Corinthians 10 verse 8:E3
he sorry
10:8
10 these two verses of scripture where
this man has repented and he calls him
back to fellowship. Right? So, the first
five verses is talking about a new
issue. What's the new issue? Sexual
immorality. And he will continue that
thought in the next chapter, chapter
five and six. He spends time on sexual
immorality. Right? So
what did we learn in the first five
first five chapters? There's a new
issue, sexual immor immorality. There's
a man sleeping with his uh father's
wife. And Paul addresses the issue. He
gives an instruction. He passes
judgment. So being in church does not
mean we ignore people's sin. No,
we can we can call call it out. We we
shouldn't tolerate. Sometimes even if
leaders do it, we shouldn't just let it
go. If you see something that is wrong
in the local church, you need to call it
out. You need to tell you need to tell
either the pastor or whoever in the
fellowship hey such a thing is happening
so that leadership can intervene even if
it's other leaders. Are we
understanding? Yeah. So you know any
form of sin shouldn't be just covered.
Don't tolerate it. If people sin in the
church you grieve your heart because it
grieves God's heart. Are we
understanding? Shall we go to the next
section? Yeah. verse 6 to8. I hope the
first five verses are clear. Shall we
go? Verse 6 to8. Can someone read verse
6 to8 maybe online? 1 Corinthians
chapter 5 verse 6 to8.
Your gloring is not good. Do you not
know that a little leven
the whole lump? Therefore, purge out the
whole leven that you may be a new lump
since you truly are unleven. For indeed
Christ our Passover was sacrificed for
us. Therefore let us keep the feast not
with the old living nor with the leven
of mellies and wickedness but with the
unleven bread of sincerity and truth
>> and truth. Amen. So 1 Corinthians 5 6
to8 he is continuing the train of
thought. So he is saying first your
glorying is not good your boasting your
proudness is not good.
Why? Because do you not know that a
little leven
levens the whole lump? What is he
talking about? He's talking about bread.
When you put little yeast,
the whole bread gets So what is he
talking about? What is he just talking
about? The sin. If you tolerate this
sin, it affects the whole body. It
affects the whole local church. And so
he's saying your boasting, your
tolerance. See, this is what happens
when you tolerate sin in your own life
and in the church. When you don't
address it, this little sin affects
everything.
So sometimes we think, oh yeah, you
know, it's a small thing or it's a big
thing and we ignore it. But this is what
happens when we ignore. It becomes like
yeast in unleavened bread.
This yeast when it's in the unleavened
bread makes the whole bread leavenven,
right? And so the Israelites in the
Passover, they would only eat of the
unleavened bread. There would be no
yeast.
What does that mean? Because that bread
is pure. There's no yeast. So they would
celebrate the Passover Egypt to Israel
by breaking unleavened bread.
He is comparing that to the issue here.
You are actually supposed to be in
Christ. He's saying you're supposed to
be pure, but because you're proud,
because you're boasting, you're
glorying, he writes the word, you're
glorying
is not good. And he says, do you not
know that a little yeast can affect the
whole bread? Same way. And then he says
in um verse 7, therefore purge out the
old leaven. Purge out simply means
purify. Only have unleavened bread.
Purge out.
Verse 7. Therefore purge out the old
leaven that you may be new. You may be a
new lump since you truly are unleavened.
For indeed Christ our Passover. So Jesus
is our unleavened bread.
Are we understanding? Jesus is a perfect
sacrifice. There is no impurity in him.
Jesus Christ our Passover was sacrificed
for us. Therefore let us keep the feast.
Meaning therefore let us fellowship with
Jesus without any
leaven, without any yeast.
So that we may be pure. The body may be
pure. Pure as Christ is pure. As we
fellowship with him, we become pure.
Don't let any yeast, don't let any other
thing come in the way of our fellowship
with God. That's what he's saying.
Feast. Are you understanding? Therefore,
let us keep the feast not with old
leaven. So he's saying leave all your
sinful desires.
Repent from that and fellowship with
Christ.
Oh leaven, nor with leavenven of malice
and wickedness, but with unleavened
bread of sincerity and truth. Meaning
you fellowship with Jesus from a pure
heart, from a genuine heart, from a
honest heart. Sincerity and truth, where
there is no lies, no deception. This is
how we should fellowship with God. Where
all the masks fall off. We come before
Christ with sincerity and truth.
Are we understanding? Yes. So verse 6
to8 he is basically following the train
of thought that because you are proud in
verse two he says this is what is
happening. It is making the whole body
it is affecting the whole body.
So purge yourself purify yourself remove
this. That's why he says remove this man
from the fellowship. deliver him to
Satan. So whenever someone is delivered
to Satan, understand this is removing
from not not telling him to go to hell
or whatever it simply means don't be
part of the fellowship until you repent
then you can come back. Amen. Okay.
Shall we go to the next section? Yeah.
Is this fine? Verse 9 to13. Verse 9-13.
Can someone read that here in person
please? 1 Corinthians chapter 5:9-13
verse 9-13
I wrote to you in my epistol not to keep
company with sexual immoral people yet I
certainly did not mean with the sexual
immoral people of this world or with the
coaches or exoners or idolators since
then you would need to go out of the
world But now I have written to you not
to keep company with anyone named a
brother who is sexually immoral or
covetous or an idolator or re reviler or
a drunkard or extoroner. Not even to eat
with such such a person. For what I have
for what have I to do with judging those
also who are outside? Do you not know?
Do you not judge those who are inside
but those who are outside God judges.
Therefore put away from yourself the
evil person.
>> Yeah. Verse 9 to13 Paul is basically he
is he is kind of clarifying or building
his case on why he gave that
instruction.
He is basically going more deeper into
his explanation
on why he gave this instruction in the
letter to move to remove this person out
of fellowship. Verse 9, let's read verse
9. I wrote to you in my in my epistle
not to keep company with sexually
immoral people. I wrote to you in my
epistle which means scholars say many
people believe that Paul actually would
have written an earlier letter but we do
not know uh or or you know we do not
have any record of it as as a cannon of
scripture right so he's writing in verse
9 I wrote to you in my epistle which
means he's writing this letter and he's
saying I wrote to you in my epistle
which means there was some letter that
was written before and what was written
in that letter to keep do not keep
company with sexual immoral people and
now he's writing some years later or I
we don't know the time that they have
tolerated this sin meaning he has
already instructed the church not to
keep company
but they are now tolerating
this sin this culture right So, so we
really don't know. We we um we don't
have a record of it. Nobody knows where
this letter is. But point is that he has
written before about this issue and they
are still living in that. Okay. Now
verse 10 to 13 Paul is basically
clarifying something. See he said I have
I'm not present physically in body but
in spirit and I have put my judgment on
this person. So he's clarifying don't
judge people of the world.
Let them live their life. You because
you are in the world. Don't judge people
in the world. Let them live their life.
God will judge their heart and their
actions. So you don't need to go if you
are part of church. You don't need to go
outside church and tell everyone, "Hey,
turn from your wicked ways unless God
has really told you that."
Okay? Unless you are like John the
Baptist in the wilderness only if God
has told you do that. But we don't put
judgment to those who are living in the
world. They are already living in sin.
They're part of a sinful culture.
They're living in sin. Right? One more
thing about the sexual immorality is see
in the Corinthian culture this was very
very
um very very prevalent. Roman emperors
used to be bisexual or even homosexual.
Prostitution was a very very big thing.
Right? So what he's saying is I know
you're living in a very sinful culture.
Don't judge the people in that. But what
is he saying? He's saying but you can
judge
sinful behavior in the church.
Don't neglect that. So he's basically
building his case,
right? Don't neglect.
Just because you're in church, don't
neglect. Just because he's a brother or
a sister or a leader or a pastor, don't
neglect.
Are we understanding? So I'll read verse
10 to 13 again. Verse 10. Yet I
certainly did not mean with the sexually
immoral people of this world or with the
covetous or extortioners or idolattors
since then you would need to go out of
the world meaning what he's saying is I
did not mean for you to judge
outside the world outside the church
otherwise you have to go to every street
and tell did not mean that verse 11 but
now I have written to you not to keep
company with anyone named a brother who
is sexually immoral. So you see the word
brother. So if he is part of fellowship,
if he is part of church and he's living
in this sin, there is a sinful behavior,
call it out.
Warn the brother.
Are you understanding? Yeah. Let's read
further. Or covetous or an idoltor. So
he's saying not only people who are
sexually immoral, he's saying covetous
or an idoltor or a reviler or a drunkard
or an ex extortionist.
So he's giving a list
like like one full list. If they're in
idolatry, warn them. If they're co
living in covetousness, warn them. If
they're living as a reviler, a drunkard,
someone who struggles with alcohol, and
you see it that they struggling with
this, warn them. You can judge their
works,
judge their sinful attitude, sinful
behavior. Warn them. Verse 12, for what
have I to do with judging those who are
outside? We don't have anything to do
with judging the world outside. God will
judge. Do you not judge
outside? Do you not judge those who are
inside? But those who are outside, God
judges. Those who are outside, don't
worry about them. God will take care of
them. God will convict them. God will
either lead them.
God will judge them. Therefore, put
yourselves,
put away from yourselves the evil
person. Who's the evil person? The
person who is writing to take away. Put
yourselves. Basically he's ending
chapter 5 with what he started with the
instruction. He says therefore what does
therefore mean this is why
put yourself away from the evil person.
Let's go to 2 Thessalonians. This is
just a side quest. 2 Thessalonians
chapter 3. 2 Thessalonians chapter 3
verse 14 and 15.
2 Thessalonians chapter 3 verse 14 and
15. I'll read it. And if anyone does not
obey our word in this epistle, note that
person. So if anyone is not obeying in
the church, note observe that person.
Note that person and do not keep company
with him that he may be ashamed. Do not
keep company. If someone who is in
Christ continues to sin, continues to do
the sinful behavior. See, obviously we
have to give grace. We'll talk about
grace right after this. But if he is,
this is not changing. It's going on and
on.
It is affecting people.
Note that person and do not keep company
with him that he may be ashamed. Yet do
not count him as a enemy. Meaning don't
don't put judgment on his heart. Don't
call him your enemy
but admonish him. Warn him as a brother.
See this whole chapter is talking about
one thing. Don't tolerate sinful
behavior in the church.
It's the simple summary in all these
passages that we read in all these
verses. Don't tolerate sinful behavior.
If it is ongoing, if it is unrepented,
if it is continuous, no change, it's
affecting the culture of the church,
address it. And sometimes as a pastor,
as a leader, as a congregation member,
you will have to bring this up. You will
have to take very tough decisions.
Are we understanding? Sometimes pastors
is not only
all love, love, love. Sometimes it's
tough. You have to do these things.
You have to take certain very tough
decisions. Imagine telling someone
please move out of church. And we have
done that actually in church
like in in our local church where uh
people have been warned but because they
have not changed we had to tell them
please for a while please be outside
we'll see maybe after some time if you
have changed we'll talk again
are we understanding right so this is
the tough part now I have a question
what about grace
Paul is the one who writes about grace.
What about grace in all this? But the
point is grace without truth
cannot go hand in hand.
Grace without truth cannot go hand in
hand. Who is Jesus? Full of grace and
truth.
Jesus is full of grace, full of truth.
See, here's the thing.
Grace without truth is not real grace.
It becomes false love.
Are we understanding? Grace, write that
down. Grace without truth
is not real grace. It is false love.
If you only show grace without truth,
it's false love.
Truth without grace is not real truth.
It becomes rigid. It's harsh.
Are we understanding?
Jesus is the perfect example. He is
fully grace, fully truth. That is why
when the woman was caught in adultery.
What does he say?
Go your way.
Your sins are forgiven. Right? But he
gives her an instruction.
Are we understanding? Do not let this
define you going forward. So he showed
grace
but he also gave the truth.
You remember that right? John chapter 8
where the Pharisees come
he he shows grace to that woman but he
tells this woman do not let this be part
of your identity. meaning that this
woman should walk freely.
That is what true freedom looks like.
When you walk in grace and you walk in
truth where you receive the grace of God
and you walk in the truth of God.
Okay? So,
you know, we we read these passages and
we we we encounter these instructions
from Paul and we wonder, oh, where is
grace? Where is love?
Where is brotherly fellowship? Where is
all this? But
we need to hold this in balance.
Truth and grace. What is the truth? That
this brother is sinning. So we can't
tolerate, we can't show grace to him
when he is against the truth. When he's
living against the truth. Amen. And I
believe this is just my personal
personal thing that uh why didn't Paul
tell this about division.
If the church would have told the whole
church to leave why only this man I
believe because it was very very severe.
The whole church was talking about it.
This this is just my speculation or my
observation is that because it got to an
extent where it just the whole culture
It ruined the whole culture. That's why
such a harsh instruction. Amen. Any any
questions? Chapter five.
Before we close chapter 5, any any
questions? Short chapter, but yes. Go
ahead.
>> As Paul says, no. Uh if a brother sins
give hand him over to Shatan
>> and he will go back in the world and if
he backslides
is there any possibility will he come
back as in in Hebrews 6 chapter it says
no if the person who is backslided it is
impossible to come back to
>> yeah so see Paul writes in that same
verse let's read that again right in
that same verse he writes verse five
deliver such a one to Satan for the
destruction of the flesh that his spirit
may be saved in the day of the Lord
Jesus. So when we remove such a person
from fellowship what should be our
prayer
that they repent that they come back. So
when you give the instruction when you
give the see a lot of us want to give
the instruction but what should the
instruction come with
grace love we are doing this to you
because we want you to change we want
you to come back
okay so now our prayer should be that
but ultimately who should change he
should change we can't control their
life we can't keep banging his head hey
change change
Right? We have done enough.
He has done enough. Enough enough damage
has been done. So when we give such an
instruction, what should be our prayer?
That God will deal with that sin,
destruction of the flesh so that he may
be saved, repent, come back. And we know
in 2 Corinthians that he came back. That
is the heart of all of us. That should
be the heart for all of us. where just
because of his sinful desire we don't
pass judgment on his heart
we are giving judgment on his work on
his behavior
but what should be our prayer lord
change his heart change his desire
change his behavior so that he comes
back if we don't do this prayer then we
I mean all of us are sinners
all of us are sinners we are saved by
grace through faith
Regardless of our sin, Peter denied
Christ three times. Yet, he went to meet
him in John chapter 17. I think it's 19.
I might get confused. But, you know,
Jesus met him to restore him. That
should be our heart, right? So, we
should pray for them. Pray that they may
change. Pray that their hearts, Lord,
somehow speak to them. Their hearts are
hardened. Speak to them. Yeah. Any other
questions? Was that answering your
question?
>> Just take your mic. Mike mic. Yeah.
Uh
>> what about that Hebrews 6 chapter verse?
Hebrew say it is impossible to the
person who is gone away from the Lord.
>> Sorry. Sorry.
>> The person who is gone away from the
Lord. It is impossible for him to come
back in Hebrews chapter 6.
You want to read that verse? Yes.
>> There's another question here, Shubam.
But yeah, we we'll we'll go to that.
>> Hebrews 6:4.
>> Yeah.
>> For it is impossible for those who were
once enlightened
>> and have tested the heavenly gift and
have become partakers of the Holy
Spirit.
>> So it's very impossible.
>> Yeah. So it's impossible in the sense
that because we have received grace and
truth because we have received the
salvation message
right but what should be what's the
responsibility on our side to stay in
that walk in that right because we are
spirit soul body so our spirit holy
spirit is in our spirit our soul we have
a soul we we have a soul that is
attached to the spirit but it also has a
natural mind. We have a body. Our flesh,
whatever we receive from the spirit
needs to go to the flesh. It needs to
die.
So as we walk
in Christ, we need to subject our flesh
to him. But this man in 1 Corinthians
chapter 5, he is he is part of the
fellowship. But because he gave in to
his sinful appetites, see when we
receive Jesus does not mean our flesh
immediately dies. It's a process of
sanctification, right? And so we need to
guard against that.
And this person
because he gave into that Paul is giving
this instruction. You need to die to
your flesh. Oops.
>> So that your flesh will be destroyed,
right? And you repent and come back,
right? So yeah. So um the point is that
our spirit, soul and body should be
subject to God. Amen. So see if I can
explain it another way.
Um what happened to Judas?
He walked with Jesus for thousand days.
Peter also walked with Jesus for
thousand days but two destinies.
One went and ended his life.
One was restored. Right? So it's an
ongoing journey step by step. Right?
Yes. our spirit we are saved there's no
doubt about it but there is the flesh
there's our mind that needs to be
renewed every day to become more and
more like Christ and that's an ongoing
journey right um okay we got two more
minutes sir can you explain that part a
little more how can a person be saved
saved if we leave him oh yeah okay so
yeah so uh Shubam basically in verse 5
the person is part of fellowship he
might be saved
and Paul is saying to be out of
fellowship why because
this sin is causing
a culture where they are proud they are
tolerating the sin right and so how can
he be saved
that's what Paul writes like we need to
pray for him
that he might take some time out. Maybe
when he's in the world, he'll realize
what he has done. He'll repent and then
we will we'll see. But the point is he
can't be he can't keep coming to church
and keep
you know ruining the culture,
ruining people because it made the
church proud, made the church tolerate
sin and that is making the whole church
going it it's taking them to a
a worse place, right? And so that's why
so how how can a person be saved if he
leave him? We need to pray for them that
he somehow God will work. Somehow God
will speak to him. Lord, speak to them.
Change his heart. And we know that in
the next letter that he did. Amen. So no
matter we read this and we're like man
this is such a big sin but he still came
back right so we need to always give we
need to hold this in balance that while
we give the instruction although it's
very harsh we pray for them we believe
for them amen okay okay chapter five are
we okay we will take a break and then
uh go to chapter
